Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 17, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. In today's edition, we'll check in on how a Vonage-sponsored race car driver with a very famous name did last Saturday, and for the season. We'll read new Vonage VoIP Forum threads on a variety of topics, including a voice mail indicator that won't work behind a firewall, whether or not to buy a $10 stand Linksys offers for its Vonage-compatible equipment, and just what might be causing disconnects that one Vonage user and Vonage Forum member is experiencing. We'll also meet our current Vonage Voip Forum member of the week.

Vonage In The Headlines

Vonage-Sponsored Marco Andretti Finishes Sixth for the Year

Several times here we have written about Marco Andretti, who drives a Vonage-sponsored race car in the Star Mazda series. And, as most race car fans know, he is the grandson of famous driver Mario Andretti.

On Saturday, in the final race of the Star Mazda Series, Marco finished sixth. In the race, held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Laguna Hills, Cal., Marco finished sixth, completing the 21 laps in just a bit more than 45 minutes: 45:02.984, to be exact. The race was supposed to take 28 laps, but there was cut short to 21 laps due to five caution periods and yellow flags (sounds kind of like the roads near where I live).

But although Marco finished sixth, I am guessing that he felt a bit sentimental when he drove around Mazda Raceway's Turn 2. That turn - an especially sharp one - is named Andretti Hairpin - after Marco's granddad, who always dealt well with that stretch.

With the Star Mazda Series finished, Marco wound up in sixth place. (Yesterday's race winner James Hinchcliffe won the Series as well).

One more thing: if you go to Marco's Web site, you'll see a photo of him in his car, with the Vonage marker proudly there. Marco's site is at http://www.marcoandretti.com. You'll even find a special Vonage page on Marco's site at http://www.marcoandretti.com/vonage.htm

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On the Vonage Voip Forum, new Member ohknats kind of said "oh, rats" when he realized his Vonage voicemail indicator was not working behind his new firewall. But rather than complain just for the sake of it, he seeks a resolution to the issue by starting a new Vonage Forum thread that he's named Voicemail indicator not working behind firewall.

"I moved my RT31P2 behind my IPCop firewall. I am not forwarding any ports, ohknats writes. "Vonage works fine but (the voice mail indicator) no longer works. Is there a specific port I need to forward?"

Trowski (who we will read more about in a bit), then posts, asking ohknats what kind of phone he is using.

Ohknats answers that he is using the Uniden TRU8860-2. He adds that the voice mail indicator "did work before I put the ATA behind the firewall. I did notice last night though that the light did start to blink after I received a voicemail," he writes. "Not too sure why it would start to work after a week."

"Your firewall probably has Stateful Packet Inspection enabled (SPI). I experienced the same problem," replies Vonage Forum Member cpremooe. "Once I disabled SPI," he writes,  "VM (voice mail) worked again."

On a new Vonage Forum thread called Mounting Linksys ?, Forum Member gburg  has a question about an optional stand that Linksys is offering for its router often used with Vonage.

"I have a Linksys WRTP54G router. Since Linksys is extremely proud of the optional stand ($10.), I am looking at mounting it on a wall," gburg writes. "Has anyone had any experience as to heat related or operational ? This router is so light that it doesn't stand up by itself very well."

Here comes Trowski again. "With my RTP300, which looks almost identical, if I place it on its side with the power cord on the bottom," he writes, "I get it (the router) to balance pretty well."

Then dkohl, who is a new Vonage Forum Member, adds:

"I have the Linksys WRT54GP2 mounted on the wall with no problems. No heat issues at all."

He says the only trouble he had "is that when you have cables connected to all ports it ends up out of balance and was hard to keep on the wall. I had to drive a small finish nail into the wall as well just to keep it from flipping."

To that, Trowski makes a reply post with a good solution: "Use two pieces of duct tape and you will be A-OK," he writes.

On a new Vonage Forum Thread titled Decreasing Disconnects, new Vonage Forum Member 4x4 sounds like he'd like to take a "4x4" to his current router he's been using with his Vonage service.

"What can I do to decrease the number of disconnects?," he writes. "Right now, if I'm on the phone for over 10 min. it's almost guaranteed I'll get disconnected.

He says he has I reset the router to 30 (kbps) "and that seemed to help some but I still would like to have a conversation that doesn't get chopped off all of the time," writes 4x4, who then posts tests results he's made using our Voip Speed Test. By the way, you can access our free Voip Speed Test Feature by clicking here.

Vonage Forum Member Steve48  posts with his initial diagnosis of the problem. "With that kind of test call rating, it sounds as if you've got an ISP issue," he writes.  He then asks 4x4 what happens when he takes temporarily take the phone adapter out and connects his computer directly to the modem? "What does the test call say then?"

Meanwhile, Vonage Forum Member Vonager posts that he thinks the cable modem could be the root of the problem. He suggests that 4x4 contact his broadband cable provider and ask about different cable modems that might offer.

It's Monday, time to announce our Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week. Had to choose Trowski. whose wide range of knowledge, helpfulness and wit can be found on so many of his 900 or so posts he has made so far. He even took time to talk to a reporter who was writing an article about Vonage's marketing. If you want to read some of Trowski's recent posts, click here.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day.
