Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

In today's edition, we'll point you to two well-written reviews- of the Vonage service itself, and then about the VTech Broadband Telephone System (BTS) with Vonage service. We'll also review an interesting new Vonage Forum thread about how a user "hung up" on the fact that his Vonage connection wouldn't hang up after a call attacked the problem - and the advice some helpful fellow Vonage Forum Members gave him along the way.

Article: Vonage Brings More Features and Lower Prices to the Phone Business

On the O'Reilly Network website, there's a new article called "What Is Vonage."

This very helpful article is divided into four parts. These are:

"Vonage Splashes onto The Scene"; "How Vonage Works Like Traditional Telephone Service;" How Vonage Differs from Traditional Telephone Service," and "Vonage In The Future."

"No matter what happens to Vonage, the telephone business will never be the same," author James Gaskin writes. "Customers, fed up with Ma Bell raising prices but not innovation over the past 30 years, now see what telephone improvements are possible. Internet and telephones now belong together, even if only a small percentage of telephone customers have switched already. The spotlight shines on voice communications now, and customer patience runs thin waiting for more features and lower prices.

Tech site reviewer looks at the VTech BTS For Vonage

Another tech website, Tom's Networking, has a review today of the VTech Broadband Telephone System (BTS) with Vonage service (IP 8100-2).

"The BTS is a nicely implemented all-in-one solution that marries the convenience of cordless with the power of Voip telephony, but it doesn't do anything that you can't do by plugging a cordless telephone of your choice into a Voip router," writes reviewer Tim Higgins.  "However, it does simplify installation and reduce the chances of incorrect configuration for folks who don't get their kicks from futzing around with hooking multiple gizmos up and getting them to play nice together. 

"Another advantage," Tim adds, "is that its $149 price is in line, and maybe even a bit of a deal compared to what it would cost you for a two-handset 5.8GHz phone, plus a wired Voip router. And it's definitely a better deal than rolling your own when you factor in the $50 mail-in rebate offer that's running as I write this. (You only get the rebate after 60 days of Vonage service.) 

"But when compared to other Vonage-enabled hardware like the Linksys RT31P2," Tim concludes, "the BTS has the disadvantage of not offering the option of a second phone line. So if you're thinking of using the BTS as a mini cordless PBX, you'll need to get another plan."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a Vonage Forum thread that has just been renamed Phone won't hang up - Resolved, we can see how new Vonage Forum Member mjr0483 dealt with the issue he named the thread after.

"I have had this problem before with my old configuration of a 4 port Linksys and a PAP2, where the cordless phone shows 'In Use' and I can not make or receive calls," he writes. "It happened again today with my new setup which I currently have a Panasonic Expandable 5.8GHz Phone with 1 extra phone connected to a WRTP54G router." 

Mjr says he's rebooted the router/phone adapter several times but it does not fix the problem. "I think I have narrowed it down to phone not going on hook," he adds.  "Like the adapter does not see the voltage change and does not go on hook, but I am not sure. After rebooting, I was able to make a test call to my cell phone, voicemail picked up, but I was unable to hang up the phone." 

As a final note, mjr adds that this test call was from the extended handset.

Galion then offers some helpful suggestions.

"On most of the Panasonic 5.8 gig expandable phones you can 'un-register' the phone and then register it again with the base. I actually had to un-register a phone on my system," he writes. He says that although he doesn't have the instructions handy, it is laid out in the Panasonic manual. You should follow the instructions to remove the registration from the phone. 

"There is a second set of instructions to remove the registration from the base station but I am not sure I would try that first," Galion adds. "As for the PAP2, do you still have a good old hardwired phone laying around the house? If you hook it up by itself to the adapter and are able to make calls and hang up the call then I doubt the adapter is the problem.

Finally, Galion writes that because mjr said the base station can do this "I think the problem is in the phone registration."

And joining in, VonageTPA has some more advice:

"Are you using home wiring? Try just having ONE phone connected, preferably a hardwired phone, to the WRTP54G and see what happens," he writes. "Does the Phone light stop blinking when you hang up the Panasonic? Does the Phone light stop blinking when you disconnect all phones & phone wiring from the WRTP?"
