Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

In today's edition, we'll check in on Vonage's progress toward implementing E911 solutions. We'll read a report from a Mac site that reports a bug between the QuickTime multimedia player and the voice mail retrieval feature of Vonage's site. We'll also tell you about a solution. (hint: the problem is not Vonage's). And finally on the Vonage Voip Forum, we'll look at a question a Forum Member has about setting up call forwarding without going through the Vonage Web interface.

Vonage Pleased With E911 Progress

In today's USAToday, writer Leslie Cauley checks in with the progress that Vonage is making to meet the U.S. Federal Communications Commission's November 28 deadline to provide full E911 Voip capability.

Vonage spokesperson Brooke Schulz tells Cauley that Vonage's E911 plans are "moving along nicely."

Mac Users Complain QuickTime Blocks Vonage Voice Mail, But Guess What

But guess what? On our Vonage Voip Forum, we had the answer nearly five months ago! 

OK, first some explanation. For those of you who don't know, Safari is a Web browser specifically made for the Mac Operating System. QuickTime is Apple's tool for playing multimedia files, like those movie preview clips you see on some movie websites. 

Now, a report on the Mac site MacFixIt says that when Mac users run Safari at the same time QuickTime 7.0.2 runs, some funky things happen to Vonage voice mail retrieval.

"Vonage users are supposed to be able to listen to their voicemails by logging into their accounts at and clicking on the "listen" button next to each voicemail," writes MacFixIt reader Scott Rose, "This feature works just fine on PC's. "However, on any Mac web browser, users cannot listen to their voicemails within their web browser. Instead, the Mac web browser actually downloads the voicemail to the hard drive instead of playing it within the web browser window." 

According to Rose, this bug occurs not only with Safari, but with all the major Mac-compatible web browsers in Mac OS X 10.4.2 and when QuickTime 7.0.2 is running. 

"We have tested this with Safari 2.0.1, FireFox 1.0.3, and Internet Explorer 5.2.1," he writes. "This seems like this is a QuickTime bug, because in Mac OS X 10.3.x, users could work around this issue by unchecking the box in QuickTime's System Preferences that says "Save movies in disk cache". (The unfortunate side effect of THAT, however, was that movies were no longer saved in the disk cache -- however, at least Vonage users could listen to their voicemails within their web browser.) "Now, however, in Mac OS X 10.4.2, unchecking that box does not prevent the problem from happening. 

"So in the meantime, he adds, "users are stuck downloading their voicemails to their hard drive instead of listening to them embedded in their web browsers Some users have reported that reverting to QuickTime 6.5.2 with the use of Apple's re-installer resolves the issue."

But hey, you know what? Back in April and May, we had a Vonage Voip Forum thread about a similar problem. The thread was called Mac Safari and voicemail? 

In the thread, Vonage Forum Member sriggins wrote, "I get the broken icons too, as does a friend, but it USED to work, so something changed in 10.3 or QuickTime's plug-in."

"QuickTime 7.0 broke voicemail playback," fellow Vonage Forum Member steve-o replied. He then recommended that sriggins use this link to re-install 6.5 which will make everything work as intended:

On a new Vonage Voip Forum thread called Setting up Call Forwarding with no internet access, Vonage Forum member caralmar asks for some tips.

"With my old POTS line, I had an option to dial *72, wait for a dialtone, and then dial a number I would like to fwd calls to," caralmar writes. "This worked very fast and was easy to do. We're in/out of the house all the time and it is a pain to have to go to the web interface, log in, go to features, click on the call forwarding thing, put in the phone number, and then repeat the whole thing again to disable it." 

Faced with this, caralmar wonders if there isn't some sort of shortcut to enabling or disabling this feature so that he can do call forwarding without having to go through the web interface. 

"Also, in a related question, we were also able to set up call fwd when we were out of the house and forgot to set it up before leaving," caralmar adds. "We would just dial a local number, and punch in our phone number, pin code, and then enable the call fwd. Anyone have any slick ways of managing call fwd?"

Fellow Vonage Forum Member chevy1596 (as opposed to Chevy 1956, which was one cool car, gotta tell ya) pulls up with these suggestions:

"My preference is to use the 'Simulring' (or whatever they call it) feature," he writes. "I have it ring my cell phone as well as the phone hooked up to the Vonage line. While I am at the office, I put the cell phone on vibrate." 

Chevy1596 writes that when he leaves the office (I am guessing in his Chevy?) he uses his cell phone. "I set the roll-over to voice mail at 20 to 25 seconds so that any office calls that I miss go to my office voicemail instead of my cell phone's voicemail," he says. "I like it better than remembering to turn on and turn off my call forwarding every time I leave the office."

To that, caralmar responds: "Yep, that SimulRing would be ok... would be nice if we could do this fairly common thing by dialing an asterisk and a call fwd code... Vonage, if you're reading this, please add this!"

Can't speak for Vonage, caralmar, but you will be pleased to know that they do read the Forum.
