Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - October 07 - October 09, 2005

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 7, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. In today's edition, we'll look at a new distribution agreement in which some Canadian non-profit groups will benefit every time one leading non-profit organization service provider helps sign up a new Vonage customer.. We'll get you the scoop on what major award Vonage won last night, and clue you in on a forthcoming presentation by a Vonage exec on E911. In our popular Friday In the Blogs feature, we review what some of the Voip bloggers we read regularly have written about this week. Finally, we'll look at a new Vonage Voip Forum thread on forwarding calls in case Vonage experiences a service interruption.

Vonage In The Headlines

Sign Up For Vonage Through Canadian Non-Profit: The Non-Profit Will Make a Donation

Vonage Canada has just announced an agreement with Graceline Canada that will see Graceline offer Vonage Internet phone service. Graceline Canada provides consumers with discounted telecom services and shares a portion of the company's revenues with charitable and non-profit partners.

Each time a supporter or member of a non-profit organization subscribes to the Vonage service, through the Graceline web site, Graceline will make a donation to the designated charitable or non-profit organization. Graceline will continue to share a portion of revenues made from the Vonage service on a monthly basis with these organizations, as long as the individual continues to subscribe to Vonage Internet phone service.

"Vonage is excited to work with Graceline Canada," says Vonage Canada direct of Channel Sales Gary McLean. "Through this relationship Graceline will be able to enhance their current telecom service offering and provide customers with a number of innovative phone features for a low monthly rate. This agreement is the first of many affinity programs we will be developing in Canada."

By the way, we have a special section of the Vonage Voip Forum for our Canadian readers. Here's the direct link to our Vonage Canada Forum.

Vonage Exec Gets "Marketer of the Year" Award

Brandweek is a magazine about marketing and advertising. In a ceremony in Phoenix last night, Brandweek named its "Marketers of the Year." One of the honorees was Dean Harris, chief marketing officer of Vonage. In an announcement Brandweek distributed with the awards, they said they honored Harris because he "sold one million Americans on Internet phone service, and made Vonage a household brand-name."

By the way, a Brandweek reporter interviewed me for an article about the awards. If I find this article online, I'll certainly mention it.

Vonage To Present E911 Update

There's another one of those Voip conferences coming up. The Internet Telephony Fall 2005 Conference & Expo will take place in Los Angeles from October 24-27. I noticed that one of the three members on a October 26 panel called "VoIP Regulatory Update: Will You Be Ready?" will be Steve Seitz, VP/911/Regulatory Affairs for Vonage.

I'm sure there will be a lot of talk about the E-911 rules. I won't be there, but I am sure lots of reporters and bloggers will. And I will be tracking what they report and posting it right here in the Digest.

And speaking of the bloggers...

In The Blogs

We read about 15 Voip and IP-telephony-related Weblogs. Some we read more than others, but we enjoy most of them. Face it, bloggers are opinion-shapers. So today, as we do each Friday, we are going to give you a round-up of what the blogs we read said about Vonage during that week.

Here's what the Voip bloggers have been writing about:

Om Malik of Om Malik's Broadband Blog writes that he doesn't think much of Sprint's patent infringement lawsuit against Vonage.

Martin Geddes of Telepocalypse thinks that the Sprint lawsuit is "patently ridiculous." Read his interesting post here.

Tom Keating of VoIP Blog doesn't seem to think much of the lawsuit either.

Jeff Pulver of also joins the chorus of folks scratching their head about this lawsuit. Jeff calls it "far-fetched" and with even "less merit" than some other lawsuits he recollects. Read his post here.

Mark Evans of the Mark Evans Blog quotes from a research report by Telegeography that mentions Vonage's growth has been "remarkable by the standards of any industry." He also has an interesting theory about why Vonage's CEO Jeffrey Citron might not actually be all that freaked out about the lawsuit. Read Mark's post (when I typed that I just thought of the actress Markie Post) by clicking here.

Russell Shaw of the ZDNet IP Telephony blog makes another post in which he writes he thinks that Sprint should buy Vonage. He also points to a thread on our Forum that explores this whole issue. Here's a link to Russ' post.

Andy Abramson of VoIP Watch also joins the chorus of lawsuit-doubters.

Rich Tehrani of VoIP Blog seems to take that lawsuit more seriously than some of his fellow bloggers do.

On Ted Wallingford's The VoIP Weblog, Ted doesn't specifically mention Vonage this week, but as I wrote last week, he links to an article he's posted on the O'Reilly Network that explains some key issues that companies that are thinking about upgrading to VoIP should consider. Here's the link:

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Voip Forum thread called Forward calls in case Vonage is down, brand new Vonage Forum Member vr76413 sounds like he is a practical, Plan B type of guy.

"If Vonage is down for some reason at home," he writes, "I want my calls to be forwarded to my Cell number. How can we do it?"

He adds that he saw that option couple of months back in 'Features' page of his account, but only wants to forward the call only if his Vonage or his Internet connection is not working.

"That's the 'Network Availability Number,' " Vonage Forum Member CA1900 writes.  "It does exactly what you're asking -- automatically forward to a number in the event of a network problem, power failure, or whatever.

"As soon as your Vonage is back up, the forwarding stops," he adds. "Very cool. Sign into your Vonage account, click the Features link, and you'll see it near the top-right."

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Monday morning with our next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest, including our very popular Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week feature!!
