Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - October 6, 2005

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 6, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. Today we will look at how Vonage helped the cities of Holmdel, New Jersey and Pass Christian, Miss., draw closer together.. We'll also review interesting new Vonage Voip Forum threads on the Linksys WCG200 wireless router as well as what you can and can't do with Vonage fax lines. We also revisit and update a thread about a patent infringement lawsuit Vonage had filed on them earlier this week.

Vonage In The Headlines

Holmdel, New Jersey is where Vonage's corporate offices are now based. And that town has "adopted" Pass Christian, Mississippi, a town afflicted by hurricane damage.

The ties between the two cities came together when three town of Holmdel emergency services workers recently drove down to Pass Christian to drop off about $2,500 worth of housing related products sorely needed by area residents.  All the products were loaded into a RV, which, along with the gas, was paid for by Vonage. Holmdel Emergency Management coordinator Mike Simpson extended gratitude to Vonage, and said that because of it, none of the donation money had to be used for the trip, and instead was fully donated to Pass Christian.

The full article that describes the ties between Holmdel and Pass Christian is now a thread in our Vonage Voip Forum. To read the article in its entirety, go to http://www.vonage-forum.com/article2288.html.

 Speaking of our Forums...

On The Vonage Voip Forum

You may have been hearing and reading a lo in the news about Sprint Nextel suing Vonage for patent infringement. Yesterday, a Vonage Voip Forum thread was started and named called Sprint Nextel sues Vonage over Voip patents. Many Vonage Forum Members have given their thoughts on that lawsuit, about which Vonage spokespeople have no comment so far.

Suffice to say that Vonage Forum Members mwmcclure, galion, and Amerist don't give Sprint any sympathy. In fact, galion has just made another recent and more detailed post describing how he sees the issue. But I still say the funniest comment to date on this issue comes from KDWycha, who writes: "Sprint can go fart peas at the moon."

You know, every once in awhile, a Forum Member finds an older post and then refreshes it with new information. By the way I like to see that.

Case in point: back in February, Vonage Forum Member gkacher pitched a new thread that he named, Linksys WCG200 - QoS or Not?

"Does the Linksys WCG200 (wireless router) have QoS (Quality of Service) or not? I am wondering if the newest firmware adds it," gkacher wrote. "I want to configure Vonage for my parents with the fewest possible boxes."

(I like that-someone willing to do tech favors for their parents.)

Today, Forums Member ljwobker brings this thread back to life with some helpful info.

"The newer WRT54G routers DO have QoS shipped by default without the need for 3rd party firmware, although most of the 3rd party firmwares provide *better* QoS such as more priority levels or more fine control," he writes. "If all you need to do is say "the Vonage box is connected to port #1 and it gets high priority" then the default firmware works just fine."

"WRT54G v4 (currently at BB and other big box stores) supports firmware 4.20.X which has QoS by MAC address and/or router port," Vonage Forum Member ChrisFix adds. "Seems to work okay."

Last month, Vonage Forum Member Steve48 started a Vonage Voip Forum thread with the title Fax Lines

"Vonage offers customers a fax line for $10/month extra," Steve wrote. "Other than the stated purpose, is there any difference in the service for a fax line that would prevent it from being used as a second voice line in a pinch?"

Then, just today, new Vonage Forum Member jayped007 writes that he was told by tech support that you can make outgoing calls on the Fax line; but could not receive incoming calls.

A little while ago, I jumped in with this correction: "You can use the fax line for voice, both in and out going. It is stripped of most all features however (no call waiting, no voice mail...)"

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Friday morning with our next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest, including our popular In The Blogs feature!!
