Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - October 4, 2005

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 4, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. Today we will look at why you will likely see more Vonage ads on your local television station's website. We'll also read interesting new Vonage Voip Forum threads on wireless transmitters and what happened when a very experienced Vonage user dialed "911"- by accident.

Vonage In The Headlines

More Vonage Ads Coming To TV Station Websites

If you go to your local television station's website for news, weather, sports and program information, you might see more Vonage ads on that site soon. That's because of a new ad buying network called Local Media Network. This group of more than 150 local television stations in the U.S. has formed to simplify ad buying among member sites. Web marketing online newsletter Media Post reports today that Vonage has signed on as an advertiser with this network.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Voip Forum thread called wireless transmitter, Vonage Voip Forum Member chewy has asked a question he'd like other Forum Members to chew on.

"Is there a product that I could get that would send the signal from the VoIP router or from my wireless router that would transmit in my apartment and could be picked up and connected to the phone system? ," chewy asks. He says he is because he doesn't have a phone jack where the pc is, and because he is renting he can't drill any holes (we've been there, chewy), he feels he needs to have a long cord that will stretch to the nearest phone jack.

After an exchange of posts, Vonage Forum Member polarisdb suggests the Sveasoft WRT54G running in client mode.

By the way, I'd like to point out something. In his reply, polarisdb did something very helpful. He built a link from the phrase "Sveasoft WRT54G running in client mode" to an older Vonage Forum thread at http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic8438.html where several members discussed this solution. If you have a question or an answer, and want to make reference to an older thread where you have seen this topic discussed, it is real easy to build a link back to that thread in your reply.

All you need to do in the New Thread or Post a Reply box is highlight the text you want to include with your link and then click the globe icon on the toolbar. A box pops up where you can type in, or cut and paste the Web address of the thread you want to link the phrase to. But since the "http" already appears in the box where you will be including the web address of the old thread, I would advise you to not put in the http when you paste in the web address of that thread. See, if you do that, you'll wind up linking to a thread with two "http" in the address. If that happens your link won't work.

You know, even the best of us can make mistakes. Take for example current  Trowski, our current Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week. In a thread he started yesterday called 911 mistake but was a good confirmation... Trowski described what happened.

"I was dialing a 914 area code this AM and must have dialed 9114 because instead of my client picking up, I received the city's Police Department," he writes. "I confirmed my misdial, and was happy to see my call doesn't seem to go to an automated number anymore."

Gotta tell you, Trowski got some good natured ribbing from two other veteran Forum Members.

"Lucky they didn't come and arrest you for a "False 911 Call," KDWycha writes.

"I imagine that would only happen with abuse or malicious intent," reebok posts. How many accidental 911 calls happen per year? a lot I would bet..."

Yes, but what about those intentional 911 calls? Last week the Federal Communications Commission said it was pushing the deadline back for Voip service subscribers get back to their providers (such as Vonage) with an acknowledgement they understand the current limitations of E911. Acknowledge, or have your service interrupted.

That deadline has been pushed back until October 31, but that day - Halloween- will come sooner than you think. If you happen to be one of the relatively few I'd advise you to get it the heck out of the way now and take care of this as soon as possible.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Wednesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest,!!
