Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 30, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. Today we will look at an article that tells us exactly how many new Vonage subscribers bring their old phone numbers with them when they sign up.  In our popular Friday In the Blogs feature, we review what some of the Voip bloggers we read regularly have written about this week. Finally, we'll look at a new Vonage Voip Forum thread in which one reader who just transferred his phone service to Vonage couldn't get a ring tone on his incoming calls - and what he did to solve the problem.

Vonage In The Headlines

Guess What Percent Of New Vonage Subscribers Keep Their Old Number

In an Associated Press story that many newspapers are running today, it is pointed out that Vonage says 66 percent of new subscribers bring their old numbers with them.

This process is related to number portability issues. On the Vonage VoIP Forum, we have a special area devoted to this process, and some of the steps and issues involved in it. Here's the link to our Local Number Portability Forum: http://www.vonage-forum.com/forum8.html.

In The Blogs

We read about 15 Voip and IP-telephony-related Weblogs. Some we read more than others, but we enjoy most of them. Face it, bloggers are opinion-shapers. So today, as we do each Friday, we are going to give you a round-up of what the blogs we read said about Vonage during that week.

Here's what the Voip bloggers have been writing about:

Om Malik of Om Malik's Broadband Blog notes that Vonage has picked a team of bankers to advise the company about how to proceed with an IPO (Initial Public Offering) of stock.

Tom Keating of VoIP Blog gives his thoughts on authority being sought in the U.S. for Vonage and other calls made over Voip to be tapped by law enforcement authorities investigating crimes or seeking to prevent terrorist acts.

Jeff Pulver of Pulver.com notes that he will soon be writing a column for Business Week magazine.

Erik Lagerway's SIPThat.com  writes about the likely effect on Vonage of price rulings made by the Canada Radio-television Commission (their counterpart to the U.S. FCC)

Mark Evans of the Mark Evans Blog writes about Vonage's possible IPO, as well as a new Web site with lots of gear that can be used in conjunction with service from Vonage and other VoIP providers.

Russell Shaw of the ZDNet IP Telephony blog has a detailed interview with a Skype executive, in which he talks about Vonage. Russ also speculates why Vonage and other VoIP services are not available in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan.

Andy Abramson of VoIP Watch guesses what companies might be interested in buying Vonage - that is, should Vonage ever decide to sell.

Rich Tehrani of VoIP Blog applauds the U.S. Federal Communications Commission for giving VoIP subscribers (including Vonage subs) more time to acknowledge that they understand the E911 limitations of VoIP.

On Ted Wallingford's The VoIP Weblog, Ted links to an article he's posted on the O'Reilly Network that explains some key issues that companies that are thinking about upgrading to VoIP should consider. Here's the link: http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/network/2005/09/23/voice-over-ip-faqs.html.

Finally, we sometimes like to link to posts that are not written by VoIP bloggers, but are written by "regular" bloggers who deal with Vonage.

In that vein, on this guy Chris Hauter's blog called A New Adventure, he describes how he set up his Vonage service. I found this post a real entertaining read. If you want to read it, here's the link.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Voip Forum Member mmp has started a thread with a title that describes his problem. He's named the thread, Do not get a ring tone on incoming calls.

"I can make a call without problems but I do not get a ring tone on any of my phones when I am getting an incoming call," writes mmp, who lives near Seattle. "I do get voicemails. I disconnected my router and waited 5 minutes to no avail. Any suggestions?"

Forum Member reebok  makes a post indicating he would like to help, but could use more details. Reasonable request, I'd say.

Less than a half-hour later, mmp made a new post with more details.

"I have 3 Uniden 5.8 GHz phones and an old GE phone. All phones worked perfectly yesterday when someone called my temporary number and when someone called my permanent number," mmp writes. "Today was the day that my telephone number was suppose to be transferred from my old carrier. Now there is no sound signaling an incoming call."

Then, mmp made two new posts in which he said he solved the problem by disconnecting his old GE phone. But even with mmp's problem solved, VonageForum Member Steve48 jumps in with a post containing some related advice.

"The Vonage equipment does have limited ringer driver capability," Steve writes. He suggests that mmp give customer service a call and make sure they have the voltage all the way up.

"When I first got my RTP300 it wouldn't even ring one phone," Steve adds.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Monday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our very popular Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week feature!!
