'RealMoney' Radio Recap: Food for Thought

Vonage In Print News

September 27, 2005

By Staff

The food stocks are going up, and that doesn't bode well for the economy or the stock market, said Jim Cramer on his "RealMoney" radio show Tuesday.

The last time the food stocks went up in tandem, said Cramer, was the spring of 2000, when the Federal Reserve took interest rates too high and the economy started to fall apart. Cramer told listeners to pay heed to the big sea change as people are selling companies that need a strong economy to do well, like the chemicals, paper, steel, heavy machinery and homebuilding stocks. Meanwhile, they're buying food stocks, which have consistent growth regardless of economic conditions.

The best way to play the food stocks is Altria (MO:NYSE), said Cramer. He believes Altria can go to $100.

Cramer also likes General Mills (GIS:NYSE), H.J. Heinz (HNZ:NYSE), Hormel Foods (HRL:NYSE), PepsiCo (PEP:NYSE), Kellogg (K:NYSE) and Unilever (UN:NYSE).

Cramer has turned bearish on Comcast (CMCSA:Nasdaq), saying the company is facing too much competition. The attractiveness of Comcast and cable companies, Cramer said, had been their monopolies. However, those monopolies continue to be eroded. "If we lose the monopoly, we lose everything," said Cramer.

The latest example, he said, is Verizon (VZ:NYSE), which is now offering DSL for $14.95 a month. That's too cheap, he said, if you are competing with Verizon. Cramer also said Vonage will become an increasing threat to Comcast for Voip telephony service.

"If you're in Comcast because of me, I want you to sell it," said Cramer.

In response to a question about StoneMor Partners (STON:Nasdaq), Cramer said he would hold onto it, but he needs to "find out why it's so hated."

Commenting on defense stocks, Cramer said he is worried about possible cutbacks in defense spending as a result of the spending for the rebuilding effort from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Cramer said he would "ring the register" on Celebrate Express (BDAY:Nasdaq), adding he believes September will be a "very bad month" for retail.

Responding to questions about the housing sector, Cramer said the sector is "not right" as the Fed continues to raise interest rates. Cramer had these things to say about specific stocks related to housing.

● Lowe's (LOW:NYSE): The company has "said all of the right things" and that people are just selling the stock to be "pennywise." "I want to own it," said Cramer.

● Home Solutions of America (HOM:Amex): The "news is pretty positive," but "maybe let it come in a little more."

● William Lyon Homes (WLS:NYSE): It is "too late" to own WLS.

● Home Depot (HD:NYSE): Cramer likes Home Depot but likes Lowe's "much more."

● Orleans Homebuilders (OHB:Amex): "If I had to own one [homebuilder] , I would be drawn to it." Cramer thinks the stock should be selling at 7 times earnings, which would equate to a stock price of $26. The stock closed Tuesday at $23.05.

Commenting on Myogen (MYOG:Nasdaq), Cramer said he probably wouldn't chase it in the mid-$24 range, which is above its stock offering at $23 last week.

Cramer would not be confident recommending (NTES:Nasdaq) until the stock trades lower. Cramer prefers Google (GOOG:Nasdaq) as a play on Chinese Internet. He believes Google is headed for $350.

Montpelier Re Holdings (MRH:NYSE) "dodged a bullet" with Hurricane Rita, said Cramer. Nevertheless, Rita caused a little more damage than people initially thought, and MRH is selling off because of it. Cramer is betting MRH has a handle on its losses but said MRH will face problems if the damage from the hurricanes is revised upward substantially.

Cramer said he's reluctant to sell Intel (INTC:Nasdaq) at 16 times earnings.

Cramer prefers Amgen (AMGN:Nasdaq) to Genentech (DNA:NYSE) as Amgen is cheaper. But, both are "really excellent" companies, said Cramer.

Finally, in response to a caller's question for a natural gas trust recommendation, Cramer would recommend Permian Basin Royalty Trust (PBT:NYSE). A similar investment Cramer likes even more is Fording Canadian Coal Trust (FDG:NYSE) because he thinks coal will go up more than natural gas.
