Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 26, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. Wow, the weekend went by quickly.

Before we get to this issue, I have some great news. Yesterday, our 17,000th member joined us. Join me in welcoming ptr727 to the Vonage Voip Forum. We look forward to reading your posts, ptr727!

Today we will read the results of a survey that shows decision makers at small to medium size businesses are more likely to think about companies like Vonage rather than older phone companies.  We'll also find out how a Vonage-sponsored race car driver with a very famous name did yesterday. We'll look at Vonage Voip Forum threads about Vonage's performance during Hurricanes Rita and Katrina, as well as a user who has worked out a solution that lets the Asterisk VoIP PBX solution work with his Vonage SoftPhone. And finally, we'll meet our Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week.

Vonage In The Headlines

Small Business "Decision-Makers" Think Of Companies Like Vonage when Thinking About Voip

According to a study just released by research and consulting firm Savatar- "nontraditional telecoms" - of which Vonage is well, come to mind most often when small to medium size business decision-makers think about VoIP. The overall percentage of these businesspeople who think about companies such as Vonage first is 25 percent, compared to 14 percent by traditional telephone companies.

Vonage-Sponsored Marco Andretti Finishes Second In Race

Yesterday, Vonage-sponsored race car driver Marco Andretti finished second at the IRL (Indy Racing League) Infiniti Pro Series Corning 100 in Watkins Glen, N.Y.

Marco - grandson of the famous Mario Andretti- led with two laps to go, but was caught by winner Jeff Simmons.

Still, considering that Marco had less than spectacular practice runs Friday and Saturday, the second-place finish could not be considered disappointing. Except the last word on that would be Marco's - and he sure sounds disappointed in his performance.

"The way we were looking earlier in the weekend we would have been ecstatic with second today," Andretti said. "But after the start of the race we were going for the win."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

As if the Gulf Coast of the U.S. didn't suffer enough from Hurricane Katrina, they are now digging out from Hurricane Rita. Concerns about this latest storm caused Vonage Forum Member roadman1977 to start a thread that he named, Will VoIP Work During Rita??

Some interesting reply posts were made by Vonage Forum Members VonageTPA and iain.

"If Katrina was any indication, Voip will be up & running," VonageTPA writes. "Because of the way Voip works, it doesn't depend on the long distance trunk lines between cities, therefore appears in many cities as a local phone call. Since the long distance trunks are usually overloaded before the storm hits, then trashed during/after a storm hits, getting calls in or out of the area becomes a real problem. With Voip bypassing that bottleneck, from what I've seen Voip can get through when conventional means fail.

"Case in point, Katrina," VonageTPA adds. "I was able to get through to everywhere in New Orleans with Vonage, even when I was getting 'All circuits are busy' or fast busy signals on my cell & land line.

Iain then posted here with some Hurricane Rita specifics:

"We have family stuck on I-10 somewhere between Houston and San Antonio and so far our Vonage line has been the only line able to reach them on their cell phones," iain wrote on Friday. "The rest of the family spread across four different states from California to the east coast keep getting busy signals dialing into the area. Good job Vonage."

On a new Vonage Voip Forum thread called Vonage, Softphone and Asterisk working as desired!, Forum Member alee is all a-glee about how his Asterisk Voip PBX works with his Vonage SoftPhone service.

"After a weekend of calling myself, I have a perfect solution in place with Asterisk," alee writes. Here are the steps he's taken:

1. Incoming calls to HOME Simulring my ATA and my Softphone #

2. If the line is in use, call waiting indicator shows up on the analog phones, and the Softphone # rings normally

3. If the softphone client is not available (i.e. my PC is not on), the analog phones off the ATA continue to ring normally '

4. Softphone client traffic does not disrupt the ATA's ability to call out and vice versa.

"Now this itself isn't that much of an achievement, but this opens up a realm of IP phones to me," alee writes. "So, the next step is to add several IP phones in the apartment. Since it's a softphone account, I essentially am only bandwidth limited in the number of outbound calls I can make, so if anyone picks up an IP phone they are guaranteed a dialtone.

"Better yet, I can take an IP phone with me, and not disrupt the phones in the apartment," he writes. "Any extension I take with me will re-register with the Asterisk PBX server when I put it back on a network, and ring with my primary number. In short, now the ATA can stay put and I can just take what I need with me."

Speaking of, for those of you who use Vonage SoftPhone, we have a special section of our Vonage Voip Forum devoted to this service. You'll find it at:

Time for our Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week. This week, we are going to honor a Member who is not hesitant to post questions or offer answers.
