Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 23, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today’s edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. Today we will read about a new solution Vonage is putting in place that will let you test your Vonage service to see the extent of E-911 emergency services in your area. In our popular In The Blogs feature, we’ll see what some Voip bloggers we regularly read are writing about this week. We'll read a Vonage Voip Forum thread on the availability of Vonage service in areas likely to be affected by Hurricane Rita, as well as a thread with a question about Vonage service Caller I.D.

Vonage In The Headlines

Vonage Announces E-911 Availability Test Solution

TeleCommunication Systems (TCS) and Vonage have announced a new service called Voip Verify. The technology will provide Vonage subscribers with a simple tool to determine the availability and extent of the individual's emergency services coverage from the caller's current registered location.

When Vonage customers dial 9-3-3 from their Vonage service, Voip Verify informs the user how his or her distress call will be routed, and what information the Vonage user should be prepared to provide to the emergency services call taker. Offering subscribers the ability to hear verification of their E911 coverage status at any time simply by placing a Voip call demonstrates Vonage's continuing determination to provide its subscribers with a comprehensive solution set for their emergency services needs.

"Vonage is implementing broad measures to ensure our subscribers' personal safety," said Martin Hakim Din, Senior Vice President, Architecture, Vonage Network. "We believe that Vonage callers should know where their call will go and how it will be handled when they have an emergency. By dialing '9-3-3,' Vonage customers will know what kind of emergency response services they will get. We selected TCS to deliver this life-saving solution using its Voip Verify service, because of its proven experience in the routing and delivery of wireless E E911 calls and shared commitment to public safety."

Vonage is currently rolling out EE911 services to Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) across its national footprint. Based on the combination of the user's location and current Voip EE911 deployment status of the PSAP to which their E911 call would be routed, a message is generated that informs the caller of his or her current emergency service status. A basic requirement for EE911 service is that Voip users must "provision" or register the location address of the device that may be used for an E911 call. If the provisioned location is supported by the local PSAP, callers will be informed that they are in an area where calls for emergency services can be delivered to the local PSAP for response and action. TCS Voip Verify puts this information literally at the fingertips of Vonage's subscribers.

In The Blogs

We read about 15 Voip and IP-telephony-related Weblogs. Some we read more than others, but we enjoy most of them. Face it, bloggers are opinion-shapers. So today, as we do each Friday, we are going to give you a round-up of what the blogs we read said about Vonage during that week.

Here's what the Voip bloggers have been writing about:

Om Malik of Om Malik's Broadband Blog says he thinks that in light of the fact that other Voip companies have been able to sell themselves for billions of dollars, Vonage should consider selling out as well.

Tom Keating of VoIP Blog doesn’t mention Vonage this week, but has some interesting posts about what Google might be up to.

Jeff Pulver of Pulver.com has highlights from the Fall 2005 Von Show in Boston- which Jeff’s company produced and I attended. He also has an interesting guest blog from former U.S. Federal Communications Commission chair Michael Powell, who writes about E-911 over Voip and other subjects of interest to Voip users.

Mark Evans of the Mark Evans Blog writes about the pros and cons about Vonage going public with stock as opposed to putting itself up for sale.

Russell Shaw of the ZDNet IP Telephony blog tells what he thinks about whether what he calls “consumer” Voip services such as Vonage will be successful selling services to large and medium size businesses. He, too, writes a lot about Google.

Andy Abramson of VoIP Watch talks about Vonage’s alliance with Level 3 for E-911 support.

Rich Tehrani of VoIP Blog doesn’t write about Vonage this week, but still has several interesting posts with valuable insights about where Voip is going.

BroadbandReports.com has a Forum thread called speed test in which several posters discuss Vonage speed tests, the results they achieved, and what these results mean.

advancedippipeline's Paul Kapustka comments about Vonage CEOs Jeffrey Citron’s suggestions about the value of Voip for the national security infrastructure in the U.S.

On Ted Wallingford's The Voip Weblog, he comments about new ways Vonage subscribers will be able to test to see if E-911 works over their Vonage connection.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

As I post this, Hurricane Rita is about to hit the Texas Gulf Coast. A new thread called Will VOIP Work During Rita?? finds Vonage Forum Member roadman1977 asking, “What are your opinions about Voip during Rita or any disaster?? I was reading some news reports that Voip provided an excellent means of communications during Katrina.”

Veteran Vonage Forum Member reebok correctly points out that the availability of Vonage in these areas will mostly depend on whether the Internet Service Provider you use to access your Vonage service will be up and running.

On a new Vonage Voip Forum thread called Does the "Fax" Line Have Caller ID?, Vonage Voip Forum Member sichejo writes, “If I get a second line, billed as a fax line, is caller id delivered on that line?”

Fair question. I’ve jumped in and answered: “No, the fax line is striped of most all features, that’s what makes it a "clean" line for faxing.”

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Monday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week feature!!
