Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - September 22, 2005

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 22, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

I'm just back from a drive up to Boston and a fascinating day at the Fall VON (Voice Over Net) trade show, and a visit with a family member who was surprised to see me!

Today we will read about what Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron spoke about during his keynote at the Fall VON conference. We'll see what some investment bankers recommend as a wise strategy for Vonage going forward.  We'll read a Vonage Voip Forum thread on a question a Forum Member has about the possibility of making simultaneous calls, and a thread in which a Member is looking for a solution to "beeping" during Vonage calls.

Vonage In The Headlines

Vonage CEO Asks For "Broadband Bill of Rights"

At the Fall Von 2005 show in Boston, Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron, issued a "broadband bill of rights."

Among its tenets are that users have: the right to connect any device they want to a network; the right to send and receive data packets the network of their service provider; the right to access anything they want over the Internet so long as it is legal; the right to privacy online and in telecommunications; the right to high-quality broadband that actually reaches the speeds advertised by providers.

Users should have the right to equipment that achieves speeds of at least 1M bit, Citron said, acknowledging that he doesn't know if that's the right number to aim for, but that it would be better than the 80K bps (bits per second) or 100K bps that users often experience. "That's not broadband," he said. "That's just a little above current dial-up."

Vonage Urged To Consider Possible Sale

According to the U.K.-based prestigious financial newspaper Financial Times, the two investment banks Vonage has been working with to get its stock listed,  is being encouraged to consider a sale while it presses ahead with plans for an initial public offering.

The Financial Times says that UBS and Deutsche Bank, the investment banks chosen by Vonage to underwrite its stock market listing, have been suggesting that the company pursue a "parallel process", according to people familiar with the matter.

Such a "parallel process" would involve seeking out, or responding to, expressions of interest in the company from potential buyers while at the same time moving forward with plans to raise up to $600m in an IPO.

The newspaper says that last week's deal that resulted in eBay buying Skype for $2.6 billion has lead to suggestions that Vonage could generate between $1 and $1.5 billion in a sale.

"Vonage might be attractive to a host of companies in the telecommunications, media and technology industries," the newspaper reports. "According to Wall Street bankers, cable groups such as Time Warner and Comcast, as well as traditional telephone carriers such as Verizon might consider acquiring it."

The Financial Times also adds that they tried to contact Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron for a comment, but Citron could not be reached.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

The other day, new Vonage Voip Forum member ericm started a thread with an interesting question. He named the thread, How many simultaneous calls?

"How many simultaneous outgoing calls can I make with the small business unlimited plan?" Eric writes. Is it just limited by my bandwidth or does Vonage set a limit. I have a dedicated 100mbit internet connection.  Does this mean I can make thousands of outgoing calls at same time? I think there has to be some kind of limit somewhere."

Your friendly Vonage Forum proprietor (that would be me, of course) answered: "One per account (well, two if you include the second line, a dedicated fax line, but that is limited to 500 minutes per month).  "But with a 100 megabit connection (assuming that is 100 megabit upstream also), you should have no problem with 100 plus lines (accounts)."

Vonage Forum Member Marley X responds by making an interesting point. "That 100mb/s is probably just your Ethernet, I doubt you're getting anywhere near that out to the internet" he writes. "The amount of simultaneous calls depends on the bandwidth both upstream and downstream that your ISP is providing you. As well as the quality of the line, no packet loss and latency, etc."

In a new Vonage Forum thread called New Service-Two Issues, new Vonage Forum Member JoeP describes two things he'd like some help with.

"I am experiencing two problems," he writes. "The first is the dreaded "beeping" that the caller hears. "The second issue is with ring delay on outgoing calls. The first ring takes anywhere from 7 to 11 seconds. There is no problem with the incoming calls."

VonageTPA, who just happens to be our Vonage Voip Forum Member of the week, feels comfortable offering advice on the "beeping" issue that's been bothering JoeP.

"On the spurious DTMF tone detection, I believe Vonage can adjust the sensitivity of the DTMF decoder inside the PAP2," he writes.  "I've never had the PAP2, played a bit with the RT31P2 (which is similar to the PAP2 in voice functions), but I know DTMF detection sensitivity is adjustable on the RTP300 adapters."

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Friday morning with our next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest
