Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 14, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, some exciting news. Early this morning (or was that late last night?) at precisely 12:52 a.m., we got our 12 millionth page view since we started the Forum back on March, 2003. Considering that we "only" got our 11 millionth page view on August 15, that means our site visitors have read more than one million of our pages in the last month alone. Not bad, considering I know that some of you folks were by the beach over Labor Day!

Say, 12 million is a nice round number. I even made a screen capture of our page view counter as we hit that magic mark. Here it is:

OK, let's see what's up for today. We'll get the latest on Vonage's online ad spending for August, and how that compares with the spending of other ads you may notice online. We'll look at what Vonage will be doing today to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. We'll read Vonage Voip Forum threads on a Vonage adapter light that won't go out and a Vonage router that won't connect.

Vonage In The Headlines

Vonage Ranks Third In Online Ad Spending

Every month, the survey firm Nielsen/NetRatings measures online spending by leading Internet advertisers, as well as the number of times advertisers' individual ads are served up for viewing. Nielsen does this by using data such as published online ad rates by advertisers, using various research methods measuring the frequency of visits to various websites and pages within them, and estimating the times specific advertisers' ads appear on these pages.

For August, Nielsen/Net Ratings estimated that Vonage spent $14,165,400 on online advertising. That places Vonage third, behind only United Online, Inc. (the NetZero Internet Service Provider) and

In terms of total times ads were served up, Vonage ads finished fourth, behind United Online, and Apollo Group, Inc. (University of Phoenix).

Vonage Gives "Ellen" $100,000 For Katrina Relief

Comedian Ellen DeGeneres is a native of New Orleans - a city that was quite literally torn apart by Hurricane Katrina. On today's Ellen DeGeneres Show, Vonage will give Ellen a $100,000 check toward Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

If you want to watch today's show, and catch the Vonage segment, the Ellen DeGeneres Show website has a clickable map where you can check show airtime in your area. Here's the link:

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Voip Forum Member joeldwolf sure isn't "crying wolf" about his router issues. As a matter of fact, he's started a new Vonage Voip Forum thread titled complete router failure to discuss the issue.

Here's what's going on:

He describes router problems with his Linksys WRT54g: "The last thing i did after setting the QOS was to experiment with the static IP setting or the automatic in the basic setup... I think after I hit save the page took a while to load fully again and think I either closed the window or clicked away," joeldwolf writes. "So now the lights do alot of blinking and I get no connection at all."

Not one to give up easily, joeldwolf says he's tried the little button on the back a couple of times for 5 to 15 seconds. "I unplugged the power and then tried unplugging everything and hitting the button on back again," he writes. "I can't access the router through the browser... so.. what next."

Actually what was "next" was a quick follow-up post from joeldwolf, who wrote that he even tried a firmware upgrade to no avail.

Then, fellow Vonage Forum Member mundy5 suggested that rather than hassle with firmware upgrades that don't seem to be working, joeldwolf bring the router back to the retailer, let them know it is defective, and exchange it for a replacement.

Joeldwolf did that, and followed up with a post that indicates things seem to be working OK.

On a new Vonage Voip Forum thread called Vonage adapter Ethernet LED lights just keep flashing, new Vonage Voip Forum Member jmjoseph  explains the problem he is having. By the way, LED stands for "Light Emitting Diode."

"I have cable internet, so I have my ethernet wire going from my modem to my SMC Barricade router in slot 1," jmjoseph explains. "I then have one ethernet wire going from my router to my computer and one going from my router to my Vonage Linksys PAP2 adapter."

He goes on to explain that while broadband cable Internet connection is working without any problem, his phone does not work. Which brings jmjoseph to the subject of the thread he started.

"My phone does not work," he writes. "The power light is solidly lit, however my ethernet light has been flashing for hours (like 10 hours now). Having the power led solidly lit is a breakthrough because before none of the lights were solidly lit."

Jm has tried to fix this jam by hooking up his Vonage adapter right to my cable modem, but this hasn't been the way to go. "After a day of constant flashing that did not seem to work," he says. "It was my understanding that it should only take 5-10 minutes for the phone to be useable but this adapter does not want to seem to work."

What's even more frustrating for jmjoseph, while he has his phone hooked up to the phone 1 slot, the phone has not lit up once. "I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem or know what I am doing wrong .." he writes.

Vonage Forum Member charast posts a helpful pointer. "Hopefully this link will help if you have not already seen it." He then links to:, which is our handy, illustrated Vonage Network Setup Guide.

Charast correctly notes that about halfway down is a section on wiring a Linksys PAP2 Phone Adapter with a router.

Thanks, Charast.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Thursday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
