Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - September 7, 2005

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 7, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. Lots of news today. We'll read about an important milestone Vonage has just reached, find out about a new donation by Vonage to Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, and learn about a new speakerphone that works with Vonage SoftPhone. We'll look at a Vonage Voip Forum thread from a user who is wondering if he can call from his Vonage SoftPhone to his regular Vonage phone for free. We'll also meet a member who tells us how he changed the incoming ring duration on his Vonage phone.

Vonage In The Headlines

Vonage Activates Its One Millionth Line

Vonage says it now has one million lines in service in North America. It announced that threshold yesterday.

I'm not surprised that Vonage chairman and CEO Jeffrey Citron is pleased.

"In a very short time, Vonage has woken up a dormant telecommunications industry and sparked a tidal wave of change; activating over one million lines is both a milestone for Vonage and the industry," Citron said yesterday.

A million of anything gained -as opposed to owed or spent- now that's a good thing, I say.

Vonage Reportedly Donates 500 ATAs To Katrina Relief Efforts

OK, I hear ya. Let's clear up the alphabet soup first. ATAs are devices used to connect one or more standard analog telephones to a Voice over IP based network - such as Vonage's.

Telephony Online magazine reports that encouraged by a teleconference held last Friday by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, Vonage has donated 500 dual-port ATAs and, working with Cisco, "hundreds" of Internet phones. The article didn't say exactly which agencies are receiving the equipment.

Still, I am sure that since communications needs are so vital for aid workers as well as the people they are helping, this effort is greatly appreciated.

New USB Speakerphone Works with Vonage SoftPhone.

Just this morning comes news of a new portable USB speakerphone called the IOGEAR GPH1000U. I'm not endorsing it because I haven't tried it yet, but still, I think this device sounds interesting.

The IOGEAR GPH1000U supports softphone applications such as Vonage SoftPhone. It weighs 1.5 ounces, has full duplex speakers with 110dB peak volume, and costs $59.95.

Speaking of the Vonage SoftPhone, did you know we have a Vonage SoftPhone Forum? Here's the link: http://www.vonage-forum.com/forum11.html. Hey, why not let's go there now!

On The Vonage Voip Forum

When I see members of the U.S. Armed Forces performing heroically to rescue victims of Hurricane Katrina, that makes me even more proud to be an American. So when a member of the military posts here, my first reaction - even before I read his or her post - is to say thank you.

On the Vonage SoftPhone Forum section of our Vonage Voip Forum, jaff50 has posted a new thread that he's named, Can I call my main number with softphone. He writes:

"I am in the military and deploying," jaff50 says. "I was curious what speeds do I need to maintain a connection with softphone and also since I will have a different number can I call my main number." He also says he is "a little confused" about whether if he uses his Vonage SoftPhone connection to call over his laptop to his home Vonage line, if that would count against the 500 monthly minutes in his Vonage plan.

Veteran Vonage Forum Member scerruti then provides yet another one of his a very helpful answers. He points out that the type of Vonage-to-Vonage call jaff50 has asked about would be free.

As to the "speed" section of jaff50's question:

"Speeds for the military are the same as for civilians as far as I know," scerruti says. "Using normal quality you should have 30Kbps in both directions."

Earlier this week, new Vonage Voip Forum Member dlynch was wondering if he could change the ring duration on his Vonage phones. Because Dave (dlynch's first name) was curious, he started a thread and named it Ring Duration to Short

"I have a problem with the incoming ring duration on my phones through my Linksys WRTP54G router," dlynch wrote. "I hear almost half rings from my phones with a shorter pause in my house while they sound normal to the person calling me; plus when calling the person calling hears 4 rings while it rings 6 times at my house!"

Dave then says that when he called Vonage tech support, they tried to change the line voltage and the dB gain, but that didn't solve his problem.

So next, he tried another router and got the same results!

"I can't believe that no one else has noticed that the phone has a different ring duration with this service which causes problems if you want to use a device like a home answering machine to pick up after 4 rings for the toll saver function and it picks up after 3!," he adds. "It makes no difference if I go directly into the adapter or the whole house wiring I get the same duration!"

Not long after dlynch's post went up, Vonage Forum Member kpdillon posted a possible solution. By the way, kpdillon has been a member here for less than five weeks, but has already made more than 60 posts. Much appreciated, kp.

So anyway, kpdillon suggests," I am lead to believe that they (Vonage) might be able to adjust this (ring duration issue) on the router. From what I understand there is a voice coding section that allows them to configure the ring cadence."

Guess what. Seems that dlynch got back to Vonage with this new information and the problem was solved.

"I haven't quite figured out how to translate the hex codes yet but my default ring cadence was set to 0x00000FFC00000000 and after getting it switched to 0xFFFFF00000000000 the ring works perfectly and matches/syncs with what the caller hears when they call you," dlynch writes In my opinion these settings got configured this way before leaving the factory. "Your friendly Vonage tech should be able to address it for you."

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Thursday morning with our next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest !!
