Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. After three days off with the family for the U.S. Labor Day  holiday, it is good to be back. Given the tragic events related to Hurricane Katrina, I wish that all families could be happily together as we all are. In that frame of mind, we'll lead with a story about how someone I know very well has been helping out in New Orleans. We'll look at Vonage Voip Forum threads from users with echo and radio interference problems. And finally, we'll introduce you to our newest Vonage VoIP Forum Member of the Week.

Vonage In The Headlines

On Forum Thread, Vonage Users Keep Up With Service Availability

Last week as the extent of damage inflicted by Hurricane Katrina became painfully apparent, Vonage Voip Forum Member VonageTPA started a thread that he named, Due to the hurricane in the area you are calling.....

Although there haven't been any new posts on this thread in the last five days, the subject of Vonage service in the affected areas is part of a far larger story that has dominated online, television, radio and print. This thread has gotten more than 500 reads, including quite a few over the weekend. I invite any Forum Member who has either used Vonage to communicate with someone in this region - or Forum Members from the region whose Internet access and Vonage service has now been restored, to post on that thread. A Good News Story From New Orleans

Vonage, cell, landline and Internet access were not the only problems in New Orleans last week. Roads were virtually impassable, and those residents who could not immediately get out ran out of food to eat. 

This last week, a fellow named Shane found himself called to New Orleans on a security-related assignment. While there, he made the time to go into the heart of New Orleans - not a safe place - and deliver much-needed food to area residents. Here's a link to Shane's story

Shane is a believer in preparedness, and realizes we live in a world of mounting dangers- some natural, some certainly not. I know this from more than just visiting his sites and reading about his work. I'm proud to say that Shane Connor is my brother.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

For her first post, new Vonage Voip Forum member Dawn has started a  thread that she named Radio Interference. By the way, I like it when new Members jump in!! 

"I recently moved, and so did my Vonage," Dawn writes. (Hey Dawn, me and my family can relate)" Because of a telephone company strike, not all of my outlets where available to me to hook the Vonage up to my entire home. As a result, I hooked up one phone directly to the Vonage. Although I never heard any interference with the phone calls, I am getting radio interference with live streaming video conferencing that I do over the net." 

Dawn closes her post out asking other Vonage Forum Members if they have any ideas as to what would cause this.

Veteran Vonage Forum Member scerruti then provides a very helpful answer. That's no surprise, because scerruti, who we have honored with our Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week, always provides helpful answers.

"Are you using external speakers?," scerruti asks. He adds that "the speaker cables would be the most likely place for RFI to be introduced. Failing that I would check whether the outlet your computer is plugged into is properly grounded. If none of that works you may need to move or reorient your computer. 

One more piece of advice scerruti offers that makes a lot of sense to us:

"Finally make sure that the RFI is being introduced on your end and not by someone else in the conference either by having a video conference by yourself or joining the same video conference using a different computer," he writes.

Dawn was not the only brand new Vonage Forum Member that joined us this weekend and kicked off their participation here with a very interesting post. So did ljaffe, who created a post that he's titled, lots of echo on RT31P2, no echo on RTP300.

"I have two Vonage lines," the Silver Springs, Maryland resident tells us. Line 1 is on an RT31P2 and line 2 is on an RTP300. have been experiencing problems with line 1 that are not happening with line 2." 

Here are ljaffe's three problems: 

1- Parties at the far end of a call complain that they hear echo. "I have confirmed this by calling line 1 from my cell phone," he writes. "Yet when I call line 2, I do not hear echo. Callers on line 2 have also confirmed they do not hear echo on this line. 

2-"When on a call on line 1, the far end will occasionally hear a tone as if someone pressed a number button on the phone," he adds. "This occurs even when no one is touching the near end phone, so the problem is not caused by someone accidentally pressing a button on the phone. Again, this does not happen on line 2." 

3- Finally, ljaffe lets us know that his answering machine (a built in function of his VTech 20-2481 cordless phone) will occasionally hang up on a caller on line 1. "This never happened with my old landline and does not appear to happen on line 2," he writes.

Once again, scerruti has jumped in with an expert answer. 

"Your problems sound like problems normally encountered with bad wiring," writes scerruti, who suggests to ljaffe that he try unplugging the phone line from the RT31P2 and putting it in the RTP300 and vice versa being sure to change the lines at the adapters. "

Your goal here would be to test whether the problem is in the adapters or with the phone (or phone cords)," scerruti writes. "The tones you are reporting are a common problem of the adapter mistakenly recognizing a sound as a DTMF tones. These tones are not sent in the audio stream, they are sent as a separate signal and recreated at the far end as a full tone." 

Scerruti doesn't think that ljaffe's problems are with his Internet Service Provider.  In closing, though, scerruti does add this important point: "If switching the phone lines doesn't move the problem then I would see if Vonage will switch you to port 2 on the RT31P2."
