Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - September 2 - 5, 2005

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 2, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. Today we will look at an updated account of how a Baton Rouge, Louisiana hospital is working with Vonage to improve patient care for so many new patients whose health has been adversely affected by Hurricane Katrina. In our popular Friday In the Blogs feature, we review what some of the Voip bloggers we read regularly have written about this week. Finally, we'll look at a Vonage Voip Forum thread that will give you a refresher course on how to pull up your entire month's Vonage calling activity.

Vonage In The Headlines

Vonage Solution for Busy Louisiana Hospital Now In Place

With so many New Orleans-area hospitals closed or severely hampered as a result of the terrible flooding brought on by Hurricane Katrina, other hospitals in the state of Louisiana are doing their part to help. One of these is Baton Rouge General, which has been taking patients from New Orleans 85 miles to the southeast while running on generator power.

Yesterday, I posted a link to an article about what Vonage is doing to help. We now have word the solution is in place. Here's the link to a new article I have just posted about this wonderful gesture.

To review, Baton Rouge General personnel have been able to make local calls, but long distance connections have been down. That's important to be able to call doctors, insurance companies and specialists members who already have a business or a medical relationship with all these new patients. Plus, out-of-town family members also need to be contacted

Then, hospital administrators had an idea. They decided to contact PHNS, their Dallas-based IT outsourcing and consulting company. PHNS, in turn, contacted Vonage, which donated hardware as well as local and long distance services so hospital staffers could make calls outside Baton Rouge's local calling area.

Combined with 20 donated Dell laptops, the solution is in place.

"Now, (hospital staff) can receive records, reports and information on patients," said PHNS systems architect Ritch Roberts, "and they (staff) can be in touch with attending doctors who will likely be in another city. It will be invaluable in the Emergency Room and triage areas. One thing is clear: Everyone really wants to help."

In The Blogs

We read about 15 Voip and IP-telephony-related Weblogs. Some we read more than others, but we enjoy most of them. Face it, bloggers are opinion-shapers. So today, as we do each Friday, we are going to give you a round-up of what the blogs we read said about Vonage during that week.

Here's what the Voip bloggers have been writing about:

Om Malik of Om Malik's Broadband Blog gives his take on what all these new Voice over IM announcements- such as Google Talk and Microsoft's purchase of Skype-like softphone developer Teleo- means for all VoIP subscribers.

Tom Keating of VoIP Blog has an interesting article on whether unlimited calling plans such as Vonage's will spell the end of advance-pay calling cards.

Jeff Pulver of links to several posts he has made about some key players in the Voip industry. He notes that many Voip providers (that happens to include Vonage) will be at the Fall VON show in Boston the week of September 19. By the way, I'm planning on being there, too.

Russell Shaw of the ZDNet IP Telephony blog wrote about the effects that Hurricane Katrina has had on Vonage service, and the possibility that lower cell phone plan international calling rates could cause some potential Vonage users to stick with cell instead.  Incidentally, last week I found Russ' new post on the O'Reilly Windows Dev Center called Setting Up Vonage With Your PC.

Andy Abramson of VoIP Watch talks about the implications for Vonage about some new numbers that say more than 1.3 million North Americans are getting their Voip service from their cable broadband provider.

Rich Tehrani of VoIP Blog gives his views about the 30-day extension that the U.S. Federal Communications Commission gave to Vonage and other Voip providers last week to get acknowledgements from all their subscribers that they understand the current limits of E911. Those who don't send their acknowledgements back to Vonage will be cut off. has an interesting thread called Asterisk and Vonage that describes the way to connect an Asterisk server to Vonage is through a Vonage Business Plus account. has a Forum thread called Any reason to upgrade from ATA186? in which one Vonage user sticks up for the old - but in his view perfectly functional - Cisco ATA 186 Analog Telephone Adapter.

advancedippipeline's Paul Kapustka posts his opinion that some of the broadband provider phone companies that are competing for a share of the Voip market are sending an inconsistent message. He also would like to see a more diligent build-out of the U.S. broadband communications infrastructure-an infrastructure that most U.S. Vonage subscribers use.

On Ted Wallingford's The VoIP Weblog, he talks about the effects of Hurricane Katrina on the telephone communications structure in and around New Orleans. Ted also writes about what he thinks about Microsoft buying softphone developer Teleo, and what that means for Voip in general.

Finally, we sometimes feature mentions about Vonage on blogs that are not specifically about Vonage, or even VoIP. I noticed the MT Law Blog, from law firm Mallory & Tsibouris Co., LPA has this entry from Alvin Borromeo: "I just got my Vonage Voip router and set up my new home phone system. So far so good. I don't know why it took me so long to switch."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Voip Forum thread named How do I view my usage activity for the whole billing period, new Vonage Voip Forum Member rpguy4 writes, "When I go to view my bill for the last month. I only see call activity for the last couple days." "Am I missing something ? Is there any way to this information? "

Veteran Vonage Forum Member scerruti then provides a very helpful answer. That's no surprise, because scerruti, who we have honored with our Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week, always provides helpful answers.

"If you are interested in billing then 1. Log into your Vonage account 2. Select "Billing" 3. Select 'Billing History' 4. Select the Invoice you are interested in viewing detail (the invoice will have a date at the end of the billing period) 5. Select "View Billing Detail" (this option is only available in a metered plan)," he writes. "You can see recent activity on the dashboard, the page that is first displayed when you log in.

Just in case rpguy wants to see more than just recent activity, scerruti has the answer to that one, too.

"If you wish to see more activity you can select the 'Activity' tab," he adds. "By default the activity is displayed in 7 day blocks. However you can do an advanced search, 'Advanced Activity Search' and get a report for a longer period of time. The report may however be divided into separate pages."

Then scerruti throws in this added morsel of helpful info:

Finally, if you would like to download and manipulate the activity data in a spreadsheet you can download the free tool I created to do that. More information can be found by following the link in my signature."

In appreciation for creating the link, Stephen (scerruti's actual name is Stephen Cerruti) here's the link to more info about Steve's Download Vonage Activity as Excel Workbook tool:

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day.
