Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - September 1, 2005

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 1, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Lots to talk about today, so let's get busy and  review what's in store for you in today's Digest.  With Louisiana and Mississippi still recovering from the terrible effects of Hurricane Katrina, we'll look at what Vonage is doing to help. We'll bring you up to speed on a Vonage contest that ends tomorrow. We'll also tell you about yet another new major retail where you'll be able to purchase the Vonage equipment you'll need. We'll also review a new Vonage Voip Forum thread about how a new Vonage Forum Member was able to hook up his new Vonage service at home with some help from other Forum Members, and a thread describing how one Forum Member fixed his Vonage voice mail when it wasn't working properly.

Vonage In The Headlines

Vonage Helps Busy Louisiana Hospital

With so many New Orleans-area hospitals closed or severely hampered as a result of the terrible flooding brought on by Hurricane Katrina, other hospitals in the state of Louisiana are doing their part to help. One of these is Baton Rouge General, which has been taking patients from New Orleans 85 miles to the southeast while running on generator power.

Baton Rouge General personnel have been able to make local calls, but long distance connections have been down. That's important to be able to call doctors, insurance companies and specialists members who already have a business or a medical relationship with all these new patients. Plus, out-of-town family members also need to be contacted

Then, hospital administrators had an idea. They decided to contact PHNS, their Dallas-based IT outsourcing and consulting company. PHNS, in turn, contacted Vonage, which donated hardware as well as local and long distance services so hospital staffers could make calls outside Baton Rouge's local calling area.

Combined with 20 donated Dell laptops, the solution is in place.

"Now, (hospital staff) can receive records, reports and information on patients," said PHNS systems architect Ritch Roberts, "and they (staff) can be in touch with attending doctors who will likely be in another city. It will be invaluable in the Emergency Room and triage areas. One thing is clear: Everyone really wants to help."

I've posted more information about this donation effort. To read the article, click here.

Time Running Out To Vote in Vonage "Pimp That Phone" Contest

On a far, far lighter note, tomorrow is the last day you have to vote for one of the four finalists in the Vonage Pimp That Phone contest. Four finalists who have made design modifications ("pimping") on Vonage-compatible phones are competing for a $2,000 prize, plus a year of free Vonage service.

To learn more about the finalists, as well as get to pages with links to photos of their work, click this link. Once you are ready to vote, go to the Vote Now! page by clicking here.

The Pimp That Phone winner will be announced shortly.

Office Depot's Canada Stores To Carry Vonage Start-Up Kit

Although Office Depot is a U.S.-based chain, it also has more than 30 stores in Canada. These stores are in the Montreal, Toronto, Halifax, Calgary, Vancouver and Edmonton metro areas.

Vonage Canada has just announced that the Vonage start-up kit will be available at each of these stores. Potential or existing Vonage Canada customers can also order online at

And, let me add we have a special Vonage Forum for Vonage Canada users. You'll find our Vonage Canada Forum at

So speaking of the Vonage Voip Forum...

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Voip Forum thread named Problems hooking up my house, new Vonage Forum Member budershank says although he has carefully searched read through all threads and posts relevant to this issue, he's still having problems.

That's why we're here, budershank - or, as your friends and family call you - Sean.

"My phone service just transfered my local phone number to my Vonage line today," Sean writes. "I disconnected both of my lines outside then plugged the line from the router Vonage sent to a wall jack. I get no dial tone from any other jack in the house."

Next, Sean decided to do some troubleshooting.

"To trouble shoot this I hooked up a splitter to the wire coming from the router and then connected a phone to the other jack in the splitter," he writes. "This got me a dial tone on the one line. I plugged the splitter in and I still had a dial tone on the one phone but not to any wall jack in the house. After that I ran a wire to a different jack in the house with the same results."

Sean closes his thread-opening post by asking if there is a step he has forgotten or something else he might do.

Then, Vonage Forum Member Bnr78 joins in. By the way, check out the animation Bnr is using. Too cool!

"Unplug the router from the power strip to the wall outlet, your router might not be getting enough juice to send the signal around the house," Bnr78 writes. "If that isn't the case, then possible the signal is getting grounded somewhere. In other words something wrong with the wiring inside the house. Remember you aren't dealing with analog anymore you are doing digital through your analog wire."

Turns out the wiring was the problem. "It was just crappy wiring someone did when we had the house built, or like 10 years ago when we had a second line installed," Sean/budershank posted back.

Yesterday, Vonage Voip Forum Member KDWycha was having a tough time with his Vonage voice mail. Since KD (Kevin) wanted to know if only he was having the problem or if it might be far broader in scope, he started a thread that he named Voicemail Trouble This Afternoon? 8/31/05.

"Just wondering if anyone else if having a problem this afternoon with their message waiting indicator shutting off," he wrote yesterday. "I delete the message and exit out with * and the light goes off. Then 2 (minutes) later it is back on and there are no new messages. Figured Vonage was having trouble with it again."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member Vonager suggested to KD that he "log into your Vonage web account (Dashboard), disable VM, and enable it back on (might want to reboot your devices)." Vonager added some folks have reported that disabling/enabling voice mail can fix voice-mail issues.

Then, KD came back with another post in which he described how he resolved the issue. "I just left another message for myself and deleted it," he wrote, "and it seems to have fixed the problem."

By the way, when you post a message stating a problem and asking your fellow Vonage Voip Forum Members to help, it is always a courtesy to let us know when you have solved the problem on your own. That way, our helpful Members will be able to devote their time and energies to helping those of your fellow Forum Members who have unanswered questions.

Sean and Ken, good on you for doing this.
