Andretti Earns Pole at Infineon Raceway In Vonage Car

Andretti Earns Pole at Infineon Raceway

August 27, 2005

By Staff

Marco Andretti claimed his third career pole position, winning the SWE Race Car Parts Pole Award for the Sonoma 100.

Andretti, the son of IndyCar Series team owner Michael Andretti and grandson of racing legend Mario Andretti, has won the pole position for each of the series' two non-oval races. He recorded a lap of 1:24.2261 (98.307 mph).

Rookie Bobby Wilson, making his series debut with Brian Stewart Racing, will start alongside Andretti after recording a lap of 1:24.2379 (98.293 mph).

POST-SWE RACE CAR PARTS POLE QUALIFYING QUOTES:

MARCO ANDRETTI (No. 26 Vonage Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone, won SWE Race Car Parts Pole Award): "It was a little too close for comfort if it was up to me. I didn't have the hundredths on my dash, I only had the tenths, so I knew I had tied the pole time, but I didn't know if I had gotten it or not. After almost losing it coming on, and a terrible first stretch, I had some work to do on the back half, but we put it together. I almost lost it coming on, so I got a terrible run coming on the straightaway, which hurt me down the straightaway. Turn 1 was alright, but I had a big understeer, so I was trying to use the wheel spin to compensate. There's a fine line between getting the thing turned on power and spinning. Turn 2 and 3 wasn't good, so I had some work to do on the back."

BOBBY WILSON (No. 3 Multimatic/Brian Stewart Racing Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone, qualified second): "It was good. The guys put together a great package this weekend for me, and I'm just driving it to its limits. It felt really good, really comfortable. I'm looking forward to the race. I'm just going to do my best tomorrow. That's all you can do. Looking for a win. That would be great right out of the box, but I don't want to jump to conclusions. Right now, the team is working great. I'm fairly confident that I'll be up front."

JEFF SIMMONS (No. 24 Team ISI Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone, qualified third): "It was a decent run. I think I left some out on the table. The car didn't feel real good on the first lap. It had a bit of understeer. I think I took it a little too easy into the corners where it didn't feel so good on the first lap."

WADE CUNNINGHAM (No. 33 Motorsport New Zealand Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone, qualfied fourth): "It was a little bit of a guess really, because we didn't know exactly what was going on. We missed most of the second practice. We just didn't make the right guess for qualifying, so the time suffered because of it. We'll have to see how it goes. We generally have a good race car. We'll work on it in final warmup again and see how it goes for the race."

CHRIS FESTA (No. 19 SpacePak/Carecentric/SSM Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone): "We've made a lot of changes through the weekend so far. We've gone a little softer with the car in the rear. It's really made a big difference for us. Qualifying was probably the best we had all weekend. So we're going to work on it a little more for the warm up this afternoon, so we can go racing tomorrow.
