Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

Let us review what's in store for you in today's Digest.  With Louisiana and Mississippi recovering from Hurricane Katrina, we'll see what Vonage Forum members directly affected by the storm had to say about their experiences. We'll read what a couple of expert technology industry analysts think about Vonage's rumored plans to become a public company. We'll also review an interesting new Vonage Voip Forum thread on what to do if you are experiencing high packet discards on your Vonage connection. We'll also read a thread that explains just what that "proof of purchase symbol" is - and where to find it. 

Vonage In The Headlines

Some Vonage Users Affected By Hurricane Katrina

As most of you know, big parts of Louisiana and Mississippi were affected by Hurricane Katrina yesterday. The areas that got the worst hits included New Orleans and Biloxi.

Whenever a storm or other natural disaster hits of this magnitude, it is natural for people in the affected areas to try and call out to assure loved ones they are OK. Sometimes, it is those loved ones that call in.

With that in mind, Vonage Forum Member VonageTPA started a thread yesterday that he called, "Due to the hurricane in the area you are calling...

One of our Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week honorees, VonageTPA expressed his concern that he was having difficulty calling New Orleans.

"I was wondering how long I could keep a connection going in New Orleans and it appears that time has come... Now I'm getting 'Due to the hurricane in the area you are calling, your call cannot be completed at this time," he wrote, adding that the error message at the end of the call was "030T." 

"Interesting phone message to say the least, but very eerie," he wrote.

Next, fellow Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week honoree Trowski weighed in.

"Exactly...I tried to call a buddy over there and could not get through," he wrote.

Shortly thereafter, VonageTPA came back to put things in perspective.

"I'm impressed by how well Vonage's (service) in New Orleans held in there. Certainly far longer than I had guessed, and it held up better than most of the TV & radio stations in the area," he wrote. "It was hanging in there well after entire telephone exchanges in New Orleans stopped responding."

Analyst Suggests Good Future for Vonage In Mobile, Enterprise Areas

Technology news site CIO Today is written for Chief Information Officers at companies- many of which use- or are considering using- Vonage service.

In a new article called Vonage Rumored To Be Considering IPO, CIO's Ed Sutherland interviewed IDC Voip analyst Will Stofega about what Vonage should do next.

Stofega tells Sutherland that he sees promise for Vonage in both the mobile and enterprise markets. 

"Turning attention to mobile and enterprise customers likely will be Vonage's next move," Sutherland says Stofega told him. He quotes Stofega as saying "they (Vonage) can be a player in small and medium businesses. They have some things cooking."

On the Vonage Forum, new Member kw79 has started a thread today called High packet discards-- What can be the cause?

Before he explained his problem, kw79 performed a test at, and then posted the results in his thread. I recommend that if your post has to do with the quality of the calls you are making or receiving, doing this test and posting the results will be a good thing to do. They will help your fellow Vonage Forum members diagnose your problem and quite possibly, suggest solutions.

"Every time I test my computer at I seem to have high packet discards but little or no packet loss," kw79 writes. "I do experience choppy calls or sometimes sounds like I am in a tin can, but not all the time. I do have a person I call often that says the quality is not that good and is choppy. I can't seem to find what packet discards are or how to fix them. 

"All I found on the test site explained packet loss which I'm not experiencing, kw79 adds. " I do have any where from 25-40% packet discards almost all the time."

Scerruti, )another Vonage Voip Forum Member of the week) read kw79's post, and has offered some interesting suggestions.

"First, when looking at the packet discard, the percentage under degradation sources is not of primary importance. You are only showing 1% overall packet discards," he writes. "This is not enough to be causing your voice quality issues. In fact your test your Voip scores are better than average. So, what kind of phone have you got connected to your Vonage adapter? Have you tried calls hooking a corded analog phone directly to the adapter?"

I'll be tracking this thread closely and get back here with the resolution.

On her first Vonage Forum post, Member Annie started a thread earlier this month that she named Proof of purchase symbol

Annie wrote that she was "filling out the paperwork to get the rebate from Circuit City and Vonage and for the life of me can't figure out what the proof of purchase symbol is."

Another Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week, reebok, posted an answer that the proof of purchase symbol is "usually the bar code type deal you cut out of the box."

Just today, we get more information through a new post by new Vonage Forum member jfischer. He relates a conversation he had with a Vonage customer service rep, who explained the issue to him..

"The rep, Colleen, was very nice and explained that the new Linksys boxes have been changed and no longer include a proof of purchase symbol," jfischer wrote. "Since the Proof of Purchase no longer exists, it is no longer required. 

Fischer notes that the bar code would have been the proof of purchase, "but in this case, the rebate form is already requesting the bar code as a separate item."
