Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - August 29, 2005

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 29, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Let us review what's in store for you in today's Digest.  We'll review some late breaking news about the FCC's deadline extension for Vonage and other Voip subscribers to  acknowledge the limitations of E911. We'll celebrate a big win by one of Vonage's biggest fans and find out the latest retailer to sell Vonage equipment. We'll also review interesting new Vonage Voip Forum threads on recommended router setups, as well as on cordless phones. Finally, in our Monday feature, we'll meet our newest Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week.

Vonage In The Headlines

FCC Extends E911 Acknowledgement Deadline To September 28

Friday afternoon, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission gave Vonage and other Voip services an extra 30 days to get acknowledgment from all subscribers that they understand the limitations of E911 service over VoIP.

The FCC had said that any subscribers who fail by next Monday to send an acknowledgement back to their Voip provider (such as Vonage) should be disconnected starting the next day.

The Associated Press said that based on the current acknowledgement response rate, that would mean about 31,000 Vonage subscribers in the U.S. would need to have their service interrupted.

But now, that deadline is moved back to September 28. But if you haven't yet sent in your acknowledgment, don't procrastinate!

Big Win For Marco

That was Vonage-sponsored Marco Andretti leading from start to finish in the Sonoma 100 race at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California yesterday. Grandson of auto racing's famous Mario Andretti,18-year-old Marco captured his third win in the Menards Infiniti Pro Series.

"It was tough today," Marco said after finishing. "I was having trouble with my brakes, so I had to really take it easy on them and let my Firestone tires do a lot of the work. But, everything worked out great. The Vonage car was fast all weekend. It's special to win at a place where both my grandfather and father raced, and it was great to have them both here today."

Hey, Marco. When you said that you were having trouble with your brakes, that's something most of us can relate to. But I'd bet our mechanics- as good as they may be - don't work as fast as yours.

Big Retail Chain to Carry Vonage Equipment

With 35 locations across Canada, CompuSmart is one of the big computer and technology retail chains in North America. On Friday, Vonage and CompuSmart announced that the retailer would sell Vonage's Internet Phone Service Start-Up kit at all of its locations, as well as on the CompuSmart website at

"When combined with our existing retail channel, Vonage is now available at more than 1,030 retail outlets across Canada - the widest distribution of any provider of Internet phone service," says Joe Parent, Vonage vice president of marketing and development at Vonage Canada.

And speaking of Vonage Canada...

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On the Vonage Forum, we have a special Vonage Canada Forum. While some of the questions and answers are specific to Vonage Canada customers, many others are of broad interest to all Vonage users.

That's what we were thinking of today when we read a new Vonage Canada thread called RTP300 plus Wireless Router, recommended topology? In the thread, new Vonage Forum Member and new Vonage user sjhouse  describes the network  setup in his house. Next, he proposes three possible alternatives for how to use his new Vonage service within his network.

Let's take a look at what sjhouse has written.

"Just subscribed to Vonage and they (Vonage) tell me the (Linksys) RTP300 is on the way," sjhouse writes. He adds that currently, his setup involves "using a small network using a Microsoft MN700 wireless router, 3 hardwired PCs plus a laptop occasionally connected via wireless (considering updating the MN700 to a Linksys WRT54GC router)."

Next, sjhouse asks other users which of the three topology alternatives he's proposing would produce the best performance:

1: [Cable Modem] -> [RTP300] ->[Router] with all computers connected to the router?

2: [Cable Modem] -> [RTP300] ->[Router] with the hardwired computers connected to the RTP300's ethernet ports and using the router only as a wireless access point?

3: [Cable Modem] -> [Router] -> [RTP300] with all computers connected to the router?

By the way, sjhouse, kudos to you for stating your question very clearly.

"I did the 3rd option with one computer plugged into the modem, the other a wireless and one phone to the RTP300," responds fellow Vonage Forum Member Northguy, who added he's using a WRT54GS wireless modem.

And as long as we are giving kudos out this Monday, good on you Northguy. I noticed that while you've joined the Vonage Forum just 9 days ago, you are already posting answers to questions from your fellow Vonage Forum members. That's team spirit!!

On a new thread named Need cordless phone recommendation, new Vonage Forum member eyost describes his setup, and then asks for recommendations on a cordless phone that would work well with that setup.

"My cable is coming in on the second floor of my house and is plugged into Vonage and a wireless network," eyost writes. "My previous phone configuration had a cordless answering system mounted in the kitchen that accepts two cordless phones.

Next, eyost says he hopes to find a "cordless/answering system that has a feature that will notify of a waiting voice mail by some type of indicator on the phone handset."  Ed (the "e" in eyost) lets us know that years back he had a cordless system that offered this feature that would indicate of a waiting voice mail on the answering machine - which he could play it back from the handset.

New Vonage Voip Forum Member res22fbz responds with a link through our Forum site that yields to a page on the Panasonic site with details on the $79.95, KX-TG2432B 2.4 GHz FHSS GigaRange® Dual-Handset Cordless Phone System with Digital Answering System.

You know, seeing new Vonage Forum members like Northguy and res22fbz jump in already with helpful answers gave me an idea. I decided to go into our directory and see which of our more than 15,000 Vonage Voip Forum Members has been with us the longest, has made more than 100 posts, and has posted within the last month.

That would be houuser. He joined us just about two years ago, on September 4, 2003; has made more than 220 posts, and is a frequent poster at that. Although we've previously honored houuser as our Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week, he's met our criteria, so congrats again, houuser. I should add that houuser is extremely knowledgeable in a wide range of Vonage-related topics. Check out his posts here.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Don't forget to check with us Tuesday morning for the next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest!!
