Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - August 26 - 28, 2005 Update

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 26, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Let us review what's in store for you in today's updated Digest.  We'll review some late breaking news about the FCC's deadline extension for Vonage and other Voip subscribers to  acknowledge the limitations of E911. We'll see what the very influential Wall Street Journal says about Vonage, and about Voip in general. In our Friday In The Blogs feature, we'll find out what some of the bloggers we regularly are saying about E911, talk about Vonage going public, and other hot topics. We'll also review an interesting new Vonage Voip Forum thread about t something a Vonage Forum Member found out about his son's girlfriend's family.

Vonage In The Headlines

Wall Street Journal Has Major Article On Voip

Yesterday, The Wall Street Journal ran a major article on VoIP. The article is titled "Talk Of The Internet: As Broadband Proliferates, More Web Users Communicate With One Another by Voice."

Vonage came up in the piece.

"There are several ways in which voice over Internet protocol, familiarly called VOIP, is available," Journal reporters Christopher Rhoads and Li Yuan wrote "Some companies, like Vonage Holdings Corp., offer phone service using a normal phone hooked up to the Internet. These services, which are fee-based, are designed to take market share from the traditional phone companies. Vonage's service is cheaper than that of the phone companies because the company doesn't have to build its own copper network, and it is exempt from having to pay all kinds of phone fees."

FCC Extends E911 Acknowledgement Deadline To September 28

Friday afternoon, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission gave Vonage and other Voip services an extra 30 days to get acknowledgment from all subscribers that they understand the limitations of E911 service over VoIP.

The FCC had said that any subscribers who fail by next Monday to send an acknowledgement back to their Voip provider (such as Vonage) should be disconnected starting the next day.

The Associated Press said that based on the current acknowledgement response rate, that would mean about 31,000 Vonage subscribers in the U.S. would need to have their service interrupted.

But now, that deadline is moved back to September 28. But if you haven't yet sent in your acknowledgment, don't procrastinate!

And speaking of E911 issues, that was a big subject in the Voip blogs this week. So let's switch gears a bit and read what some bloggers we read had to say about E911, rumors of Vonage going public, and other hot news......

In The Blogs

We read about 15 Voip and IP-telephony-related Weblogs. Some we read more than others, but we enjoy most of them. Face it, bloggers are opinion-shapers. So today, as we do each Friday, we are going to give you a round-up of what the blogs we read said about Vonage during that week.

This week, man of the Bloggers we read were concerned about two things: news that Vonage might sell stock and become a public company, and how Vonage and other Voip service providers had been approaching the now-deferred-until September 28 deadline for all subscribers to get back to them acknowledging they understand the limitations of E911 over VoIP. Or, as I need to remind you, get cut off the next day.

Russell Shaw of the ZDNet IP Telephony blog has the scoop on the FCC's decision to delay E911 Voip limitations acknowledgement deadline 30 days. In fact, he recommended that earlier today. Russ also talks about the Vonage IPO in a post he's named Reported Vonage IPO a prelude to merger? Incidentally, I just found Russ' new post on the O'Reilly Windows Dev Center called Setting Up Vonage With Your PC.

Om Malik of Om Malik's Broadband Blog has a thread called Holy Smokes, Vonage Goes For An IPO. You can always count on Om to speak his mind, and come up with insights very few others have.

Tom Keating of VoIP Blog has extensive coverage and some pointed opinions about  next Tuesday's cutoff date that Vonage and other Voip providers will implement to those customers who haven't acknowledged Voip E911 limitations. Here's a link to Tom's post- FCC E911- Countdown To Voip Armageddon.

Jeff Pulver of has written a post called Surprise, Surprise...Vonage plans to file for IPO. If you read this fascinating post, not only will you learn that Jeff is not surprised. You'll learn why Jeff- who has known Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron for many years and has participated in business ventures with him - is not surprised.

Andy Abramson of VoIP Watch links to that Wall Street Journal article I just mentioned that covers Vonage. Andy was interviewed for the article.

Rich Tehrani of VoIP Blog has two posts with a lot to say about the reports that Vonage will go public and sell stock- and what that move might mean for Vonage subscribers and the company itself. He also has a post with an entertaining account of a phone conversation about Voip that he had with a fellow passenger while flying to Bermuda this week.

Mark Evans of Mark Evans Blog also gives the scoop about Vonage going public in his new post, A Vonage IPO On The Way? has an interesting thread called Asterisk and Vonage that describes the way to connect an Asterisk server to Vonage is through a Vonage Business Plus account.

Slashdot's new VoIP Provider Vonage Planning IPO? thread has more than 100 responses-many of them informative, some entertaining, and quite a few outspoken. Worth a visit. has a Forum thread you really should read called 31,000 Vonage accounts to be SHUT DOWN!! By the way, those exclamation points are not mine, but those of their thread title.

advancedippipeline's Paul Kapustka posts his opinion that the real reason behind all these Vonage IPO rumors is that the company might want to put itself up for sale.

On Ted Wallingford's The VoIP Weblog, he has several posts in which he describes his thoughts on the new Google Talk service - which some feel might be built into a full-fledged VoIP service that could one day compete with Vonage.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On the Vonage Voip Forum, new Member toy4x4 started a new thread this week called Do I have to activate 911? In his first post, toy4x4 says that he doesn't want to.

Then, the always-helpful Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week honoree reebok posted a reply that consisted of a link to an explanation on Vonage's site why Vonage users should do this. The link is at

"Why wouldn't you want to?," asked Trowski, who is another Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week honoree. Even though the deadline has been extended, -good point, Trowski.

On Vonage Voip Forum thread called Anyway to tell if someone has Vonage? Forum Member JimHolcomb is curious if there is a way he can tell whether family members who have been calling him and his wife are doing so over a Vonage connection.

"I looked at my billing summary last night and noticed I had 110 minutes in-network," Jim writes. "I or someone in the family has a friend with Vonage and I'm wondering who it is. I don't want to interrogate everyone that calls my wife and kids."

Don't blame ya, Jim. And neither does your (and our) fellow Vonage Voip Forum Member ChrisBieda.

"Check your call detail: Billing/View Call Details. It'll show which calls were in-net," Chris writes. He adds that so far as he  knows, "those 110 (minutes)  had to be outbound for them to show on your Billing Summary."

"Took me several tries to *find* that link," Jim answers, "but there it is - my son's girlfriend's family has Vonage. Thanks for the tip!
