Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 25, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Before we get started, I want to repeat some very exciting news I included in yesterday's Digest about two new places we've added where you can learn about, and then get help (or offer help) about home wiring issues here on the Vonage Forum.

Yesterday we introduced our Vonage Home Wiring and Installation Guide. I kept noticing that many of you have these types of questions, so I thought this resource would be a valuable one for you. Thanks to the good folks at Resources for Michigan Telephone Users should be credited with supplying the content.

For those of you with home wiring questions, we've started a new forum called Hard Wiring - Installation. You may recognize the Forum from its old name of  “Home Wiring”. Here's the link to our new Hard Wiring-Installation Forum.

Now, let us review what's in store for you in today's Digest. Some very big news today. We'll look at news reports that Vonage may offer stock in its company. We'll find out just what percent of Vonage users have complied with the Federal Communications Commission's requirements to acknowledge the limitations of E911. We'll also review a Vonage Voip Forum thread about the need for you to acknowledge E911 access limitations, and read what some Forum Members think about the Vonage-configured Linksys RTP300 router.

Vonage In The Headlines

Report Says Vonage To Become A Publicly Traded Company

This morning, The Wall Street Journal and a business newspaper called The Deal are both reporting that Vonage is planning to sell stock in order to raise up to $600 million. This process , which requires that Vonage file the right paperwork with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, is supposed to start within six weeks, The Deal says.

Here's a link to the article that ran in The Deal.

Vonage is feeling the heat from additional competitors, as well as all those E911 and other regulations. It costs money to stay ahead of the pack, so I am thinking Vonage would use at least some of that money to invest in E911 and other infrastructure improvements, as well as to help fund their marketing campaigns.

Stay tuned to us for the latest.

And speaking of E911...

Vonage Says 96 Percent Of Subs Have Complied with E911

Yesterday, a Vonage representative told the Associated Press newswire that about 96 percent of its U.S. subscribers have gotten back to them with acknowledgement they understand the current limitations of E911 access over Vonage.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission says that any subscribers who fail by next Monday to send an acknowledgement back to their Voip provider (such as Vonage) should be disconnected starting the next day.

The Associated Press says that based on the current acknowledgement response rate, that would mean about 31,000 Vonage subscribers in the U.S. would need to have their service interrupted.

"There is no way to know just how close (to a 100 percent customer response) we will get by Monday," Vonage spokeswoman Brooke Schulz told the Associated Press. She added that the company has been meeting with the FCC weekly "to seek their guidance as to how to implement the approaching Aug. 29 cutoff date."

And speaking of E911 issues...

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On the Vonage Voip Forum, new Member toy4x4 started a new thread today called Do I have to activate 911? In his first post, toy4x4 says that he doesn't want to.

Then, the always-helpful Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week honoree reebok posted a reply that consisted of a link to an explanation on Vonage's site why Vonage users should do this. The link is at

"Why wouldn't you want to?," asked Trowski, who is another Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week honoree. Good point, Trowski.

On another new Vonage Voip Forum thread called RTP300 - WOW!, new Vonage Voip Forum Member Canadian is -as you might guess from the thread title -quite upbeat about his new Vonage RTP300 router. He prefers the RTP300  much above the Linksys RT31P2 router he's replaced with the RTP300.

"Just received my RTP300 today - after a tech agreed to replace my RT31P2 due to heat and reboot issues - a problem which I actually fixed before I received the replacement," Canadian writes. "The voice quality is like night and day compared to the RT31P2. No white noise, and I can actually turn my volume down to low on my phone - clarity is that much better. Initial dial tone is immediate compared to the 1-2 second wait for the RT31P2."

After some give-and-take with some other Vonage Forum Members (we like when that happens), Canadian returns again with a new post.

"Ya I am a bit of a show off," Canadian writes. "I am just so damn happy its working. I've wasted many hours of my life trying to use the RT31P2 as a router - not to mention configuring a pix to use FIXUP protocols to dynamically open 10000 RTP ports when I switch my configuration around."

"Voice is mmmmmmmmmmmmm good with the RTP300," answers Vonage Forum Member AspectTec. He advises Canadian to "get yourself a good router with QOS and let it do the routing and just use the Vonage device for your phone service. Ever since I've done this I've had excellent results."

One more thing about the Linksys RTP300. Vonage Forum Member VonageTPA makes an important point as he posts a to the thread Canadian started. "Keep in mind that the Linksys RTP300 and upcoming Motorola VT2442 are actually Texas Instruments devices, not Linksys, and shouldn't be grouped (in) the same category/class, as the superior voice quality of the RTP300 clearly shows."

One more thing before we start our signing off process for today's Digest. Reading the posts from "Canadian" reminds me that we have now consolidated the posts that were in our French Canadian Forum into our Vonage Canada Forums. Even if you are not in Canada, I know you'll find some interesting posts there. Here's the link: come take a look!

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Don't forget to check with us Friday morning for the next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest- including our very popular In The Blogs feature!!
