Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - August 24, 2005

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 24, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Before we get started, I have some very exciting news about two new places we've added where you can learn about, and then get help (or offer help) about home wiring issues here on the Vonage Forum.

Today we kick off our Vonage Home Wiring and Installation Guide. I keep noticing that many of you have these types of questions, so I thought this resource would be a valuable one for you. Thanks to the good folks at Resources for Michigan Telephone Users should be credited with supplying the content.

For those of you with home wiring questions, we have a new forum called Hard Wiring - Installation. You may recognize the Forum from its old name of  “Home Wiring”. Here's the link to our new Hard Wiring-Installation Forum.

Now, let us review what's in store for you in today's Digest. We'll look at this new Google Talk Instant Messaging program that just came out this morning, and discuss if it will ever have Voip calling like you are used to with Vonage. We'll consider what Vonage says is a main advantage they have over traditional telephone calling plans. And, to help introduce you to the Hard Wiring-Installation Forum we're kicking off today, we'll go there and review a couple of threads from there.

Vonage In The Headlines

Google Talk Debuts- But It Won't Be Like Vonage

You may wonder why we are talking about a Google product here on the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest. Well one reason is that given Google's huge promotion machine, you are probably wondering about whether this new Google Talk Instant Messaging product they just introduced this morning will ever have a VoIP calling feature - and whether that might eventually be similar to Vonage's service. Plus, I know that some of you come here through searches on Google- searches done from the same search pages where Google is trumpeting their new Google Talk loud and clear this morning.

The short answer is that for now, Google Talk's Internet phone capabilities are limited to calls riding on Instant Messages Google Talk users can send to each other. There's voice, sure, but not Internet Telephony.

But this morning, I was reading Russell Shaw's IP Telephony blog. Russ writes that he's found a mention on the Google Talk Developer site that Google intends to work with a couple of softphone providers to eventually make it possible for Google Talk users to call people who aren't on the service. But Google doesn't mention anything about plans for full-fledged VoIP, like so many of you have with Vonage.

So I am thinking that if and when that happens, any Internet phone offering associated with Google Talk is more likely than not going to be a keypad associated with the Google Talk IM program. It might look a lot like Skype - actually more like Skype even than Vonage SoftPhone, which has its own shell and interface.

Vonage Says: "We Won't Nickel and Dime You"

An article from the Appleton, Wisc. Post-Crescent, and republished on the Red Nova technology news site called "More Internet Providers Are Getting Into the Telephone Game" has a couple of quotes from a Vonage senior vice-president. The article contains quotes about how Vonage feels its service is more convenient and a better buy than competing Voip and landline services.

"What we provide customers is a great value for their dollar. Not only are the packages cheaper, but we offer more features," said Brooke Schultz, senior vice president for corporate communications for Vonage. "One of the key things we have is that you can choose your own area code and take your home phone service with you wherever you go -- whether you travel or move."

The article also points out that Vonage also gives consumers a lot of control -- they can go online to change voice mail and other services.

"We really put it in the hands of the customer," Schultz said. "There's really no catch. We don't nickel and dime our customers for features and there are never any surprises -- your bill is always the same."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

As I mentioned above, today we kick off our new Hard Wiring-Installation Forum. So let's hop over there and see what Vonage VoIP Forum Members with an interest in wiring issues are talking about.

Although the thread Hardwiring question - w/ OnQ has been around since February of this year, it's been revived in the last couple of days with posts from new Forum Members jjklocke and MichaelG. Welcome to you both, by the way.

"I just bought a brand new house, and of course there is no manual or instructions for the OnQ panel," jjklocke writes "Could you send/post detailed instructions of setting up Vonage and Comcast so that all my Cat5 and phone jacks work with Vonage and Comcast?"

Then, MichaelG followed up with a question of his own:

"I also have a new house with a patch panel upstairs with a single line bringing in the phone to the house, and a distribution panel distributing it to all of the rooms via Cat5e," he writes. ("Actually each room could receive either phone or internet via the cat5e located in each room.) I would very much like to know how to connect the RPT300 to the distribution panel to distribute Vonage to each room. Any photos of the wiring would be very helpful."

Well, we have just the right place to answer these questions. I posted a suggestion that MichaelG checkout our new Vonage Home Wiring and Installation Guide. He posted back that the information in the Guide will be very helpful.

Also in the Hard Wiring forum, new Vonage Forum Member IB6UB9 started a thread today called I'm thinking about signing up. IB6UB9 is wondering whether he should get a Vonage account - and if so, what home wiring tasks lay ahead.

"And how do I connect my phones to Vonage," he asks. "I guess it works through my cable internet. But how? I have phones in rooms where I don't have a cable jack."

Then, IB6UB9 asked if somebody could please give him "a step by step procedure on how to hook Vonage up. Is there someplace I could go to see pictures of the equipment I need to hook" Vonage up.

Fair enough. Vonage Forum Member LuisPR  posted his recommendation that IB6UB9 check out our Vonage Forum's Vonage Network Setup Guides. This resource has all the illustrations and instructions you'll need for setting up Vonage. By the way, here's the link to our Vonage Network Setup Guides.

Before we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Don't forget to check with us Thursday morning for the next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest- !!
