Consumer Electronics Review: VTech IP 8100-2 Broadband Cordless Phone System

August 17, 2005

By Joal Evans

RATINGS:
Quality: 5 out of 5
Geekness: 5 out of 5

Description: VTECH Router and two cordless handsets for the Vonage Voip system.

Highlights: No extra base for cordless phones required; router for Vonage service also powers the cordless headsets; message waiting indicator on router

Lowlights: None

Vendor/Reseller: Vonage

Price: US$149.99 (minus $50 rebate after 60 days of use)

In June of 2004 we reviewed Vonage's Voip offering, and we liked it so much that we not only moved the Geek.com corporate line to it, but our Chief Editor also ended up using Vonage for his home line.

So, it's not surprising that we were eager to try out Vonage's new beta VTECH IP 8100-2 Broadband cordless phone system. As the name implies, it's a kit that ships with a router for connecting Voip and two VTECH 5.8GHz cordless headsets. The headsets themselves are feature-rich and include caller ID, call waiting, hands-free speakerphone on the handset, the ability to transfer calls and conference in outside callers, intercom features between handsets, a 50-name and number phonebook directory, and more. The phone system's coolest feature is its ability to handle up to four handsets! This could totally fill just about anyone's home phone needs.

Not to be outdone, the router includes a ready light, an in-use light, a voicemail message waiting light, and a page button. I should also mention that the router is all you need--you don't even need a base for the cordless headsets!

When the unit first arrived I added it to my pile of things to review instead of digging right in. The reason? While I was excited to get it up and running, I figured it would probably take some troubleshooting to get it working. I'm kicking myself as I write this for having waited a couple of days, since it literally was working in minutes.

I opened the box, plugged one end of the supplied Ethernet cable into a spare Ethernet jack on my router, and plugged the other end into the back of the router that came with the kit. Then I plugged the router in and powered it up. In less than a minute I saw the green ready light.

The back of the router (on top of the left computer) and the back of the whole setup. It's really just one piece, but you can see that my router is included as well.

Notice all of the indicator lights

Next, I plugged in one cordless headset and let it charge.

Unfortunately, the unit that Vonage sent me shipped with totally discharged batteries, so I had to wait for them to charge. Being impatient, I waited about 5 minutes and turned on the phone ... dial tone! Success! I then dialed my office number and heard my voicemail clear as day.

Close-up of the phone

If you've never heard what a Vonage call sounds like, feel free to call our Geek.com office number (401-608-6568) and listen to how clear the voicemail is (unless one of us picks up, of course). If you're so inclined, leave a message. Since it's Vonage, we'll receive e-mail notification of your message and then either listen to it from another phone or directly from the Web as a .WAV file.

After my first call was complete I heard another tone: the battery was low. Time to let it do a full charge.

You can see how nicely it fits into my work environment

I've been using the phone ever since, and people I call can't tell that I'm using a Voip line. The really cool thing is that I just hooked it up into a spare port in my Wi-Fi router--no special configurations were needed. I assumed that the quality of the call would deteriorate depending on activity on the LAN, but I haven't noticed any problems.

If you're looking for a solid Voip solution, give the Vonage VTECH IP 8100-2 Broadband cordless phone system a try. It's only US$149.99 at just about every retailer (some are offering rebates), including Best Buy, Circuit City, Office Depot, Radio Shack, Staples, etc. To make the deal even sweeter, Vonage is offering a $50 rebate when you use the service for more than 60 days.

Ratings Defense
I give the Vonage VTECH IP 8100-2 Broadband cordless phone system the full 5 Geekheads for Quality. Out of the box this thing was up and running in moments. It's also very sleek looking, and it's a full-featured phone with features that you'd probably never even use! In addition, the phone and router construction is solid. I actually had more trouble finding spare electric outlets than getting this thing hooked up. :-)

For Geekness I also gave the Vonage VTECH IP 8100-2 Broadband cordless phone system 5 Geekheads. The fact that all you need to do is set up a router and an Ethernet cable and then you're up and running with 5.8GHz cordless phones is amazing. I also like the fact that it's expandable to four headsets.

As you might have expected, I'm awarding the Vonage VTECH Broadband cordless phone system a Geek.com Pick. I played with a beta unit and only had one problem, so this thing is definitely a solid piece of gadgetry.
