Vonage Canada Expanding VoIP To More Than 50 Additional Cities Throughout Canada

Vonage Press Releases

Expansion includes Greater Toronto Area, southwestern Ontario; Quebec City, Montreal region, Alberta and British Columbia

MISSISSAUGA, ON, May 31, 2005 – Vonage Canada, the fastest growing provider of Internet phone service in the country, today announced an aggressive expansion of its Voice over IP (VoIP) service by providing local phone number exchanges to consumers and small businesses in more than 50 additional cities and communities.

Customers from anywhere in Canada have already been able to choose an area code and local number from 14 major centres in six provinces, including Winnipeg, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax. Vonage’s expansion will allow people outside those major urban cities to switch to Vonage and choose a new local phone number from their city or simply transfer their existing phone number over to the Vonage service.

The expansion is the largest to date for Vonage Canada. The first phase occurs in mid-June in the Greater Toronto Area and southwestern Ontario and includes phone exchanges in cities such as Mississauga, Brampton, Oshawa, Barrie, Oakville, Burlington and St. Catharines. The second phase will expand service with local numbers in Quebec City and Montreal region in early summer, and the third phase in Alberta and British Columbia in mid-summer, with more details on locations at that time.

“Millions more Canadians will soon be able to sign up for the Vonage service with a local number and experience the cost-savings and advanced features that more than 700,000 Vonage customers in North America are already enjoying,” said Bill Rainey, president, Vonage Canada. “Vonage has perfected a successful business model to bring Voip to everyday consumers. This expansion signals our resolve to broaden our footprint and give Canadians what no other traditional phone service provider can: a full-featured, flat-rate, portable phone service for all their local and long distance needs that can replace the high-priced, outdated phone service they’ve been stuck with for years.”

More than 15,000 people per week in North America are signing up with Vonage. Vonage service can be purchased online at Vonage.ca, or at several retail outlets, including Future Shop , Best Buy Canada, Staples Business Depot, London Drugs and The Source (formerly RadioShack Canada).

How Vonage Service Works
The heart of the Vonage service is the voice adapter. The size of a paperback book, the adapter converts a person’s voice into digital format which is transmitted over the Internet, similar to how an e-mail is sent across the Internet. Simply connect any existing touch tone cordless or corded phone into the adapter, then plug the Vonage adapter into any high-speed Internet connection or home router. Within minutes, customers are making and receiving phone calls with the same phone they’re familiar with, but for a fraction of the cost and with innovative features that are unavailable with traditional phone service. The adapter is portable, so customers can essentially take their phone number with them and use any phone and high-speed connection anywhere in the world.

Vonage Canada’s Voip phone service is available as flat-rate residential packages starting at $19.99 per month, up to $39.99 per month for unlimited calling anywhere in Canada and the US. Business packages range from $55.99 per month, up to $69.99 per month for unlimited calling in Canada and the US.
