Future Shop And Best Buy Offer Vonage Canada Service

Vonage Press ReleasesFuture Shop And Best Buy Offer Vonage Canada Service

“2005 is the year of VoIP” as North America’s largest Internet phone provider is now available at country’s biggest electronics retail chain

MISSISSAUGA, ON, May 26, 2005 – In another sign of the growing popularity of Internet phone service (or Voice over IP), nearly 150 Future Shop and Best Buy Canada outlets and their online e-tail websites will offer the Internet Phone Service Start-Up Kit from Vonage Canada, North America’s largest Internet phone service provider.

“2005 will be remembered as the year of VoIP, the historical tipping point when Internet phone service took off in Canada,” said Bill Rainey, president, Vonage Canada. “The retail agreement between Vonage Canada, Future Shop and Best Buy Canada is a partnership of industry leaders that significantly builds credibility for Voip and the advantages of using high-speed Internet access to make phone calls. With two of the country’s most influential consumer electronics retailers and e-tailers now offering the most popular Internet phone service, it’s clear that Voip is going mainstream. It’s no longer a matter of ‘if’ Canadians will be using VoIP. It’s only a matter of ‘when’.”

More than 15,000 people per week in North America are signing up with Vonage. Future Shop and Best Buy Canada will offer the Vonage Internet Phone Service Start-Up Kit in stores and online at and Customers simply open the kit at home or the office and then go to to select their plan and activate the service.

“Through both of our retail and online brands (Best Buy and Future Shop) we are committed to helping Canadians get the most out of technology and Vonage Canada perfectly personifies that philosophy,” said Rick Lotman, senior vice-president, merchandising and marketing, Best Buy Canada Ltd. “Vonage’s service allows Canadians to get more out of their phone service by harnessing the power of the Internet – and for significantly less cost than their traditional phone service. Vonage’s service appeals to our customers who we know want simple, innovative technology that saves them time and money.”

“When combined with our existing retail partnerships, Vonage is now available at more than 980 retail outlets across Canada, the widest distribution of any provider of Internet phone service, “ said Joe Parent, vice president, marketing and business development, Vonage Canada.

How Vonage Service Works
The heart of the Vonage service is the voice adapter. The size of a paperback book, the adapter converts a person’s voice into digital format which is transmitted over the Internet, similar to how music is transferred across the Internet. Simply connect any existing touch tone cordless or corded phone into the adapter, then plug the Vonage adapter into any high-speed Internet connection or home router. Within minutes, customers are making and receiving phone calls with the same phone they’re familiar with, but for a fraction of the cost and with innovative features that are unavailable with traditional phone service. The adapter is portable, so customers can essentially take their phone number with them and use any phone and high-speed connection anywhere in the world.

Unlike traditional phone companies, all Vonage packages include the most popular phone features at no extra charge: voicemail, call display, call waiting, *69 call return and caller ID blocking. Vonage service also includes innovative features, such as voice mail that can be automatically e-mailed as a standard sound file, so homeowners or business travelers can listen to voice mail on their computers if they’re away from home or the office. Vonage Canada offers 911 dialing to customers at no extra charge (Some restrictions apply. See for details). Customers may also transfer their existing number when they switch to Vonage service in areas where local numbers are offered.

Customers from anywhere in Canada (including remote locations) can choose an area code from 14 major centres in six provinces, including Winnipeg, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax. Customers can also obtain a secondary ‘virtual’ number – essentially a second line – from any available area code offered by Vonage in Canada, the U.S., Mexico and the United Kingdom.

Vonage Canada’s Voip phone service is available as flat-rate residential packages starting at $19.99 per month, up to $39.99 per month for unlimited calling anywhere in Canada and the US. Business packages range from $55.99 per month, up to $69.99 per month for unlimited calling in Canada and the US. The Vonage Internet Phone Service Start-Up Kit is available now at Future Shop, Best Buy Canada, and
