Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - August 16, 2005

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 16, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In today's edition, we'll look at a new phone number where you can get updates on the status of Vonage's upgrades to provide E911 service access. We'll look at one other company's efforts to get a  deadline extension for the FCC's mandate that all Vonage and other Voip service subscribers be able to receive full E911 access by November 28. We'll point you to a Vonage Voip forum thread where you can look at illustrations of one Forum Member's dual router configuration.

Vonage In The Headlines

Call "933" For Vonage E911 Service Updates

Vonage has several technology projects under way to enhance its E911 dialing and connection capabilities. Now, you can get updates on the progress of this research by dialing "933" from your Vonage phone.

"As Vonage deploys E911 throughout the (United States)., customers will be updated by a variety of means, including through '933,'" Vonage says.

Vonage Competitor Sues To Delay E911 Access Rule

Vonage, as well as most other Internet phone services, have until November 28 to complete E911 upgrades that will require E911 calls to be routed to the most geographically appropriate emergency call center, and for calls to show the originating address and phone number. By November 28, VoIP services must disconnect any subscribers that are unable to receive these services.

But at least one Vonage competitor says that's not enough time. Voip provider Nuvio says it has filed an appeal of the rule to the U.S. Court of Appeals. "Our hope would be that the (Federal Communications Commission) either adopts a more reasonable order that's based on the record of what can or cannot be done," or Congress passes some of their own legislation," Nuvio president Jason Talley tells technology news service ZDNet.

Experts Endorse Vonage For Small Businesses

Many businesses that deploy Voip use either staff or systems integrators to build customized systems. Then, they contract with a business-only Voip provider for Voip calling.

But at least one expert, Infonetics analyst Matthias Machinowinski, thinks that services such as Vonage's soon-to-be-launched Vonage Business Plus is a better idea.

"In the short term, a service provider option would be a much cheaper way to start, since you're looking at service charges rather than capital expenses," Machinowinski tells Networking Pipeline's Matthew Friedman. "That's definitely the market that service providers are going for: smaller locations and remote offices with 10 to 20 employees."

Friedman notes that the market is definitely heating up, with Vonage (and other Voip access providers) planning low-cost small business services.

"It's a pretty attractive option for some companies," Machinowinski says. "You can start with a $1000 server for a lot less than a $10,000 to $15,000 phone system."

Friedman points out that Vonage's own soon-to-be-launched multi-line business plan, Business Plus, will offer deep toll savings with low initial capital costs of $750 to $2500.

"If you look at where Vonage is in the residential space, there's no debate at all," says Vonage vice president of value added reseller (VAR) sales Mark Lyons tells Friedman. "You unplug the phone company and you cut your bill in half. We've created Business Plus plans ranging from $150 per month."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Here on the Vonage Voip Forum, we often get questions about dual router configurations. Many of these questions concern specifics about how to set up these configurations.

I can point to many posts from helpful Forum Members who have described this process in detail. But today I want to point you to a thread called Image of my dual router configuration I created in paint. Vonage Forum Member CH3MI5TR4NG3R has actually taken the time to draw, scan and post three images of his dual router config.

By the way, when you go to that thread, you'll see a few posts saying the link doesn't work. Yes, but that was then, and this is now. The link does work. If you want to directly go to the Dual Router Setup Images page whereCH3MI5TR4NG3R has posted the downloads for these three images, here's the link.

And thank you again, CH3MI5TR4NG3R.

I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

Before we end today's edition, I'd like to tell you about a milestone we've just reached. On Monday, we passed 11 million page views since we first launched in March, 2003. Thanks for joining, pointing and clicking, Vonage Voip Forum Members!

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Wednesday morning for the next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest!!
