Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 15, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In today's edition, we'll find out about how many of you Vonage users in the U.S. have indicated that  you understand the current limitations of Vonage's E911 service. We'll find out just how well a Vonage-sponsored race car driver with a famous name did this past weekend. We'll review Vonage Voip Forum threads about whether or not Vonage phone adapters can run unattended, and about using Vonage's SimulRing feature on a Vonage Limited account. Finally, we'll meet our newest Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week.

Vonage In The Headlines

Most Vonage Users Are Complying with E911 Acknowledgement Rules

Vonage users, as well as users of most other Internet phone services, have until August 29 to submit acknowledgement back to the company that they understand the current service limitations of E911 service.

The Reuters news service reports that Vonage has said it has heard back from more than 90 percent of its customers but was unable to predict whether it would achieve the 100 percent goal by an August 29 deadline.

"Vonage is continuing its campaign to contact and obtain affirmative acknowledgment from all of its customers," Vonage told the FCC in a filing last Wednesday. In the filing Vonage added that it "expects to send out at least one e-mail per week and to continue to restrict account access of subscribers who have not yet submitted an affirmative acknowledgment."

Marco Finishes a Strong Third

Vonage-sponsored race car driver Marco Andretti finished third in the Pro Series Bluegrass 100 at the Kentucky Speedway this Sunday.

He started fifth, moved up to third, but fell back as far as ninth after his car developed handling issues. (I am sure that many of us who are not race car drivers can still relate to that).

Then Marco really put the pedal to the mettle. He eventually pulled as close as second place, before being edged by Wade Cunningham for second. Travis Gregg won.

And as many of you know by now, 18-year-old Marco is the grandson of famed driver Mario Andretti and the son of another great driver, Michael Andretti.

This race was only the third oval-track race of Andretti's career. But hey, when you have relatives like that, you are born ready to race.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Are you familiar with SimulRing? This is a  free Vonage feature that allows your incoming calls to ring your Vonage number plus up to five other numbers in the US, Canada, or Puerto Rico - even if some or even none of them are Vonage numbers. Since the numbers ring at the same time, you can ensure that you are answering your important calls as quickly as possible even if you're on the go. You can activate SimulRing from your Vonage Web page.

New Vonage Voip Forum Member danrgray had a question about SimulRing that encouraged him to start a thread that he called, Using SimulRing on a Limited account, goes against minutes? Dan's key reason for asking this question is that he has the Basic 500 account, which allows 500 free minutes of calling a month in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico.

"If someone calls my house and I have SimulRing enabled," Dan asks, "does Vonage charge me minutes off my limited account (I only get 500 outgoing minutes)?"

A very good question, and one that deserves a very good answer. The answer was supplied by Vonage Forum Member JHCJr.

"Forwarded calls DO count against your minutes, and the SimulRing calls count as forwarded calls," JHCJr. writes. He then quotes back from the instructions posted on the Vonage site on the page: .  As JHCJr. quotes in his post, this page says: "Call forwarding and SimulRing are both free with all Vonage accounts. However, remember that forwarded calls are treated as an outgoing call. Therefore, if you are not enrolled in one of our unlimited plans, overage charges apply to forwarded calls that exceed your calling plan's monthly allotted minutes."

Dan then posted a "thanks for the quick reply!" to JHCJr. And to that, we add our thanks as well.

In one of the most interesting posts I have seen lately, new Vonage Forum farafella began a thread that he named Can Vonage phone adapters run unattended?

"My wife's family lives in Europe and I was thinking of getting cable internet set up for them, signing up for Vonage, and bringing a phone and phone adapter over for them so they can make calls to us in the United States," he writes. "The only problem is that they are not computer savy at all and don't have a computer. We only visit them every year or two. Can Vonage pretty much (turning the adapter on/off is ok) run unattended for long periods of time? Is there a particular adapter that would work better for this than others? Alternatively, if occasional managemnt of the adapter is required can it be done remotely?"

Every once in a while, I like to jump in and offer an answer. I did so here because to be fair to this fella farafella, he's asking two questions - which require different answers.

As to farafella's question, "can Vonage pretty much (turning the adapter on/off is ok) run unattended for long periods of time?", the answer I posted is "Yes."

And to the part of farafella's post where he asks "alternatively, if occasional managemnt of the adapter is required can it be done remotely?", the answer I posted is "No."

Finally, every Monday we name our Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week. In light of our growing membership outside the U.S., we decided to name DarKev this week's Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week. From Gatineau, Quebec, DarKev has made more posts than any of our members outside the U.S. But with DarKev, it is not just the quantity of posts, but the quality of posts he makes. He's especially knowledgeable about equipment and service issues as they effect Vonage's growing Canadian community of users. Here's a list and description of some of DarKev's recent posts.

By the way, if you are a Vonage user in Canada, come over, check out, and post to our Vonage Canada Forum! While the Vonage Canada Forum is packed with technical and service questions and answers of particular relevance to existing and potential Vonage Canada customers, there's plenty of interest for all Vonage subscribers.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Tuesday morning for the next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest!!
