A Crush of VoIP Announcements at VON

Vonage In Print News

September 24, 2003
By Staff

As the Voice-on-the-Net conference continues in Boston, the announcements of new milestones, alliances and products pour forth, with some big guns, such as AT&T and Verizon, throwing their weight behind some Voip initiatives.
Among the Crush of Announcements:
Long distance voice giant AT&T announced 9/23 a new Voip service for business customers. The service will be offered as an option on its Managed Network Virtual Private Network (VPN) for business customers starting in 2004. The service sill initially target the domestic needs of big U.S. corporations and government agencies, with continued expansion to over 40 countries slated throughout 2004.

Despite its financial softness (see separate article this issue), incumbent telco Verizon is moving on the Voip front. Verizon announced 9/23that its BroadRoute service is available in the Chicago-area, offering businesses with ISDN PRI-compatible PBXs the ability to integrate voice and data communications onto a single network. The service is intended to provide the benefit of switching technology over with the simplicity of voice-over-broadband communications by connecting the businesses' LAN and PBX equipment to a Verizon-provided PBX/IP converter, which then connects to the Verizon network via a T-1, a dedicated, high-capacity line.

Edison, NJ-based voice-over-broadband pioneer Vonage announced 9/23 the activation of 50K total lines on its network, which have generated a call volume of 60 mil. completed calls. Vonage claims it is adding 2K new lines per week.

Dallas, TX-based IP phone tech provider Corvero Networks announced 9/22 that Houston-based broadband service provider SkyPort International has selected its Convergence Platform and suite of IP telephony applications.

Alameda, CA-based broadband Class 5 switching tech provider MetaSwitch announced 9/23 a joint solution with session border controller provider Acme Packet that is designed to allow service providers to offer carrier-grade Voip services. The joint solution is currently being evaluated by a Tier 1 broadband provider.

Longmont, CO-based 911 infrastructure systems and services provider Intrado announced 9/23 a deal with Direct Partner Telecom, a subsidiary of theglobe.com, to provide Voip emergency calling services to theglobe.com's voiceglo customers. Voiceglo is a Ft. Lauderdale, FL-based company that delivers Voip service.

Richardson, TX-based hosted IP telephony tech provider VocalData announced 9/23 that DCANet, an ISP serving Pennsylvania and Delaware, has selected its VOISS application server for its hosted PBX service. Once the technology is deployed, sometime next month, DCANet plans to offer Voip services to its customers on top of the DSL, T1, wireless and hosting services currently provided.

Palo Alto, CA-based Ethernet network service provider Neopolitan Networks announced 9/23 the availability of fixed wireless services with coverage throughout Silicon Valley.

Atlanta, GA-based IP VPN provider Netifice Communications and Santa Clara, CA-based DSL provider Covad Communications announced 9/23 that the companies have expanded their relationship. Under the new deal, Netifice and Covad have eBonded their back-office systems for faster and more accurate service delivery and more effective customer support. Netifice has also integrated its SmartWorx management tool with Covad's OSS to provide quicker prequalification and provisioning.
