Catching Up With Bob Hamley

August 6, 2005

By Staff

After finishing 7-9 and missing the playoffs in their inaugural season in 2004, Arizona Sting players and Head Coach alike made a commitment to take the team to the next level. Led by General Manager and Head Coach Bob Hamley a host of Sting players picked up and moved to Arizona to help build a team, a fan base, and ultimately success. Recently had the opportunity to catch up with Coach Hamley as he takes us through what was a roller coaster season in 2005 and to get a glimpse at what’s in store for Arizona in 2006.

After the 2004 season Coach Hamley, a Fergus, Ontario native made a huge commitment to the Arizona Sting and moved his family to Arizona to take over full time responsibilities with the organization. Now a year later he is happy with the decision. “Personally it has been great, my kids have adjusted well and my wife and I really enjoy it here,” he said. Helping ease the transition was Hamley had full support of the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes organization. “The Coyotes have been very supportive. Everyone is very committed to us and what we are trying to do,” he said.

Hamley wasn’t alone in his commitment as a number of his players followed him and made the move to Arizona. The moves paid off as the Sting began developing a loyal fan base and the team began to gel. When the season began the Sting battled through adversity week in and week out working their way through nine one-goal games including five overtime contests. “That’s the way of the NLL. There’s so much parity,” Hamley said. “Many of those games could have went either way. We got some breaks and a few lucky bounces along the way but we have a great group of young guys who have matured a lot and never give up. We had a few close games but the guys have learned how to handle the pressure situations.”

The Sting, who were the second youngest team in the league this season, won six of their last nine games finishing 9-7 and securing the franchise’s first ever playoff berth and first ever home playoff game. “The guys made it exciting for everyone involved by having a great playoff run and a great end of the season,” said Hamley. Then in the playoffs Hamley led the Sting to a 16-13 win over the Colorado Mammoth in the opening round and then to a 19-15 win over the Calgary Roughnecks in the West Division championships and the Sting advanced to the 2005 Edge NLL Championship Game against the Toronto Rock.

In the championship game the Sting had the chance to showcase their team and the sport on network television on NBC in front of an international audience. “Making it to the championships was great for the whole organization,” said Hamley. “It was good for the morale of everyone here.”

Though the Sting fell 19-13 to the Rock in the championship, Coach Hamley was honored for an outstanding 2005 season and for his commitment to his team. He was awarded the Vonage General Manager of the Year Award and the “Les Bartley Trophy” for Head Coach of the Year. He is the only person ever to have won both awards. “It’s always flattering to win personal awards but without the players and the staff pushing themselves I couldn’t have done it,” he said. “Those kind of awards come with team success.”

Looking ahead to 2006 and in the face of the Expansion and Entry Drafts as well as free agency, Hamley doesn’t anticipate too many shakeups for the Sting. “We like our core group of guys,” he said. “We’re just looking to add some depth. We have added (goaltender, Rob) Blasdell to compliment (Ken) Montour and (Mike) Miron. Now we have three strong goalies and we plan on keeping three goalies. We’ve also added (forward, Jason) Crosbie whose a very experienced left hander and we’ll hopefully have (Rob) Kirkby back who is one of the top defenders in the league.” Though happy with his core group of guys, Hamley has been spending a lot of time scouting this summer to add some depth to the Sting lineup. “When you’re picking #5 overall, you want to make sure you’re getting the right guy,” he said.

While planning for ‘06, Hamley continues his commitment to the team by helping grow the team’s presence in the local community. “We’re really committed to building our fan base and building upon the local support we have here,” he said. "Everyone is excited for next season."
