Hey, we are now at more than 15,000 Members strong! We hit that magic number on Monday night when Ocanas joined us. Welcome Ocanas. We look forward to your posts!

In today's edition,  we'll look at a very useful primer on Vonage as well as VoIP- an article that you will want to read as well as to forward to your friends who aren't on board with Internet phoning yet. We'll look at exactly what Vonage users in Canada have to be happy about. We'll look at a new Vonage VoIP Forum thread on something you might try if your outbound Vonage calls are not listed in your Vonage Dashboard. Finally, we'll point you to a thread in which some of you described your experiences with some Vonage service issues that took place on Monday.

PC World Magazine Publishes Useful Primer on Voip

While I realize that many if not most of you are already set up with Vonage, I can tell from some of the questions in the Forum that not all of you are. And, of those of you who are, many have been fielding questions from your friends about what exactly Voip is.

If you are in either group, I recommend that you check out a new PC World article, "Make The Most of Your Voip Setup." The article discusses the advantages of VoIP, as well as offers sign-up, set-up and usage tips. I especially recommend the section on how to avoid installation snags.

"Some companies, including Vonage, insist that you first turn off your modem and router," writes Aoife M. McEvoy. "You then hook up the adapter to your modem/router and phone; after that, you power everything back up--often in a particular order. At this point, once your Internet connection is reestablished, the Voip adapter obtains an IP address from the router, passes along configuration info to the company's servers, and so on. Unexpected delays may mean that new firmware is being downloaded to the device.

"Depending on the provider's instructions, you must wait until a certain amount of time before you can start calling people< she continues. "You may need to look for a button on the hardware to light up, say, or for certain LEDs to stop blinking. The whole installation process may take longer than the provider estimates, but don't get impatient. Don't, for example, pick up your phone to see if you have a dial tone--you'll stop the setup routine in its tracks and mess everything up!

Vonage Has Complied With Canada's E911 Access Ruling

The United States is not the only nation that has passed rulings mandating VoIP access to E911 (Enhanced 911) services. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has as well- until a week from tomorrow as a matter of fact.

In an article published today in several Canadian newspapers, Vonage Canada president Bill Rainey says the company has already complied with this ruling. Rainey said with Vonage, a 911 call made on its service will go to a company call centre. The call-taker will verbally confirm the caller’s location and then send the call to a public safety access point, and from there the original 911 call will be placed with the appropriate police, fire or ambulance service. ‘‘There’s no delay,’’ he said, adding his company has complied with the CRTC requirements."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On your Vonage account, you can review a list of your recent outgoing and incoming calls on your Vonage dashboard. You can get to your Dashboard by logging on to your Vonage account, and then clicking the Dashboard tab. Your Dashboard lists the ten most recent Vonage calls you have made, as well as the ten most recent calls you've received on your Vonage number.

But in a new Vonage Voip Forum thread called No Outgoing Calls listed on Dashboard, Forums Member OldSnipe didn't "snipe," but was wondering about why his Dashboard wasn't working properly.

"Strange," he wrote. "When I go to the Vonage site in Dashboard received calls are listed but under outgoing calls it says none made. Under billing they got it right. This is the first time I ever noticed so I don't have any idea how long outgoing calls have not been listed." 

He then asked if he is doing anything wrong. That would be a natural question to ask.

Not long after he posted the problem, OldSnipe got a response from VonageTPA. You may remember that in yesterday's Digest, we awarded VonageTPA with our Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week.

"Let me have a virtual number / are transferring your existing number to Vonage? If so, when the Dashboard comes up, click on the phone number next to: "Recent calling activity for phone number" and change it to the number being transferred (real phone number for the account) and they'll show up," VonageTPA wrote. "I hit the same thing at one point too."

After that post, OldSnipe reposted that he now understood what the problem was. Then - showing his helpfulness with a quick follow-up, VonageTPA made another post in which he wrote:

"Let's just say I've made the same mistake before. I believe it'll stay once you've pulled up the right number, as long as you keep cookies in your web browser. I only keep mine for the existing session, so after i close the window, I have to re-select my main #."

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the thread, Is Vonage down again? Yesterday, a number of you reported Vonage outages. We take our responsibility seriously as the main place for you to describe these service issues, and even vent your frustrations if you must. Judging by the fact that no additional posts have been made to this Forum for more than 12 hours at the time I posted this edition of this Digest, it would appear everything is back to normal now.
