Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 8, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In today's edition,  we'll look at what Vonage is doing to prepare itself for the day that a law enforcement agency might feel the need to monitor criminals who are using their Vonage connection to discuss illegal acts. We'll explore a powerful argument for rules that ensure your cable or DSL provider will continue to carry your Vonage service without either Vonage or you having to jump through lots of hoops to make this happen. We'll look at a new Vonage VoIP Forum threads on changing the Caller I.D. display that your Vonage SoftPhone number displays when other people get calls from your SoftPhone number. Finally, in our Monday feature, we'll introduce you to our newest Vonage VoIP Forum Member of the Week.

Vonage In The Headlines

Hey Bad Guys: Vonage Is Readying Wiretap Software

From time to time you may have seen detective shows and movies where law enforcement has sought and obtained a legal wiretap to listen in on possibly illegal activity. Although the actual practice is rare, call intercepts have long been an established way of investigating and preventing crimes. The stakes are even higher in today's post 9/11 world.

"Full Force Of Law" Urged To Stop Vonage Blocking Attempts

Last week, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission responded to a Federal Bureau of Investigation request by issuing a regulation that requires most VoIP providers to install software that allows investigators to wiretap Voip calls. While the regulations are to take effect in 18 months, Vonage is already working on a solution that it intends to have in place by the end of this year. "From our standpoint," Vonage spokesperson Brooke Schulz tells TIME magazine, "it is an important thing to do and a right thing to do."

An influential U.S. newspaper takes the position that the Federal Communications Commission do more to ensure that DSL and cable companies carry Vonage and other Voip services that may, in fact, compete with their own services. The principle involved is called "Internet neutrality." The newspaper, the San Jose Mercury-News (which is the largest newspaper in Silicon Valley) says the principle is vitally important.

"Internet neutrality should guarantee the right of users to access all legal content and services on the Web. Access restrictions to certain sites are not a theoretical issue," the newspaper says in an editorial. "

Earlier this year, a small regional telephone company blocked its DSL customers from using Internet telephone service Vonage," the editorial adds. "The FCC quickly intervened and forced the telephone firm to restore Vonage access. The FCC had the authority to intervene under rules that, after last week's deregulation of DSL, no longer apply. That's why (last week's) adoption of the Internet-neutrality principles, which restore the FCC's authority to police such content-based discrimination, are so important."

The newspaper says that even though these principles are in place, more needs to be done to ensure their full compliance.

"The neutrality principles are an important step forward," says the Mercury-News. "But they don't have the full force of law. As long as the FCC is aggressive about enforcing them, consumers will be protected. But if the FCC fails to do so, Congress will have to step in to ensure that all Internet users remain free to access all the content and services that are flourishing on the Web."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

I know that a number of you use Vonage SoftPhone. That's why, on the Vonage VoIP Forum,  we have a special section devoted to questions, tips, opinions and answers about Vonage SoftPhone.

This weekend I noticed an interesting new thread there called Caller ID Says "vonage user"....can I change? The thread was started by Vonage Forum Member thepav who writes: "When I call from my laptop with the number shows up, but the name says Vonage User. Does anyone know how to change this?"

The short answer is, yes you can, but you have to decide whether it is worth it.

"The way caller ID name works is that the phone company who provides service (e.g. Vonage) puts your name in a database. When your call is placed only the number is actually sent with the call," Forum Member scerruti explains. It is the responsibility of the phone company of the person receiving the call to look up the name of the caller using the number.

"Unfortunately, probably because they use a number of different third parties to manage the actual POTS interface, Vonage does not supply true names into this database. Therefore there is no way at this time to have your name displayed with calls. Some people who have ported their numbers to Vonage will enjoy the benefit of having their name in the database for some period of time."

Then, Forums Member boeingpilot actually suggests a partial way around this. Sounds like this will work, but not be the easiest thing to do. "Actually, you CAN change it," he writes. "Looking at the X-Pro-vonage (SoftPhone) executable (x-pro-vonage.exe) with a text editor, you will see at line number 2556 an entry for Display name with a value of "Vonage User". I have edited this entry and then saved it. This updates the caller id info."

Boeingpilot recommends EditPlus for this task. It sounds a bit complicated to me, and I am not endorsing this solution. If you really want to tackle this, you can download EditPlus from their website at

Here on the Vonage Voip Forum, we have several members who we can always count on to offer their expertise in solving many issues. For our Vonage VoIP Forum Member of the week, we spotlight a Member who goes the extra mile and as I have often noticed, does a lot of follow-up posts and post exchanges with other Members to ensure that they understand the solution(s) he proposes.

In fact, if you read this past weekend's Digest  you will see follow-ups of this nature from our newest Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week. That would be VonageTPA.

VonageTPA has been a Member for less than a month, but he has already shown a lot of helpful expertise in those all important routers and connections issues. Many of his more than 180 posts are made to either further explain the answer to a question, to clarify the question so he could answer it better, or to make sure the Member who asked the original question understands the answer VonageTPA has given. We call that helpfulness, and that's a good bit of what we're about here.

So thanks, VonageTPA!

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Tuesday morning for the next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest!!
