Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 5, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In today's edition, In our Friday "In The Blogs" feature, we'll look at what some of the Blogs we read regularly are saying about Vonage this week. We'll explore two very helpful Vonage Voip Forum threads on the new Linksys RTP300 Broadband Router- which works with Vonage service.

Vonage In The Headlines

Vonage Partner Linksys Says Voip Is It's Fastest-Growing Product Line

It's quite possible you have Linksys routers, gateways or adapters running with your Vonage service. A new article in Business Week describes just how important Cisco, which owns Linksys, considers equipment alliances with companies like Vonage.

"Just nine months after launching these partnerships, Cisco has sold more than 2 million of these Voip connections -- making it Cisco's fastest-growing new product ever," Business Week says. "This includes Voip packages sold through retailers such as Best Buy, Office Depot, and Amazon.com. You'll see more ads as well. "Certainly, more direct marketing is something we're looking at, and probably will engage in in the future," says Cisco Chief Development Officer Charlie Giancarlo, who oversees the Linksys division.

In The Blogs

We read about 15 Voip and IP-telephony-related Weblogs. Some we read more than others, but we enjoy most of them. Face it, bloggers are opinion-shapers. So today, as we do each Friday, we are going to give you a round-up of what the blogs we read said about Vonage during that week:

Paul Kapustka of Advanced IP Pipeline has an interesting entry featuring highlights of an interview he's recently done with Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron about Vonage's new alliance with wireless Internet service provider TowerStream. Citron tells Paul why the deal was an attractive one for Vonage.

Russell Shaw of the ZDNet IP Telephony blog gave an objective assessment of the scope of Vonage's service outage this past week. I also noticed that one of Russ' readers named traderoc posted a reply saying that "I've been on Vonage for over a year, so I know there are problems, but for me, the savings are worth the very few issues I have, and the one outage that affected me. I know people who have PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) problems. They just don't make the news. And I'm sure 911 fails every day, somewhere, on the PSTN. But we don't hear much about it."

Andy Abramson of VoIP Watch mentions that he hasn't had any latency and call quality issues with Vonage in his San Diego home.

Rich Tehrani of VoIP Blog brings us up to date on the progress and importance of Vonage's deal with TeleCommunication Systems to introduce Vonage's E911 services to Public Safety Answering Points throughout the U.S. Read his post here.

On Ted Wallingford's The VoIP Weblog, he talks about Vonage's new Voip for Business platform, and points to yet another review of his new book, "Switching To VoIP."

BroadbandReports.com had two interesting posts from members. One said he likes like Vonage's options of both a regular Voip connection and a softphone, and the other noted that he's had Vonage service for a year - and the service has never gone down on its own.

On Slashdot, I saw a post linking to, and then commenting about, Vonage's new alliance with TowerStream. Here's the link. On our own Vonage Voip Forum, I even made a post about this post. Here's the link to it.

Mark Evans of Mark Evans Blog wrote about Vonage's service outage earlier this week.

Om Malik of Om Malik's Broadband Blog also talks about Vonage's new Voip for Business platform. He also spent part of this week tracking Vonage's service outage.

Jeff Pulver of Pulver.com notes that discount pricing for the Fall VON show in Boston Sept. 19 thru 22 ends today. Vonage will have a major exhibit, and several executives will be speaking at the conference. Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron will give an Industry Perspective keynote Monday Sept. 19 at 5:30 p.m. On Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 2 p.m., Vonage executive vice-president of operations Michael Tribolet will be on a panel discussion called Voip At The Retail Outlet. On Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 9 a.m., Vonage executive vice-president of product development Louis Holder will be on the Voice over Broadband Service Providers panel.

As far as our own site, the Vonage Voip Forum is as busy as ever. Let's hop over there and read what you are talking about today:

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Sometimes, frankly, we notice that new members sign up and begin posting because they haven't quite figured out things about the Vonage setup, equipment or service. While they come to the Forum frustrated, it gives them (and me) a big lift when other Vonage Forum members are able to give them the advice they need.

Take for instance a new thread called Got my RTP300, but it only works for about a minute or two. The thread was started by new Vonage Forum member f2racer,who explained he was having problems with his Vonage-configured Linksys RTP300 router. Apparently, he had little or no luck with test calls, or even resetting the router back to the factory settings.

"Anybody ever see this problem? I'd like to keep Vonage and save some $$$ on my phone bill, but this is getting ridiculous," wrote f2racer.

Vonage Forum Member VonageTPA wrote back about an hour and a half after f2racer's post, noting he hasn't had any problems with the RTP300. Then f2racer posted back that he was able to find a solution by working with Tech Support.

"OK, I may have a happy ending after all," he wrote. "Called 'Tech Support' again and they re-script-ed me. Had me change turn voicemail off and then on, in the Vonage portal, and then swapped me over to phone port 2 and everything seems to be working now."

Now, f2racer seemed to be that much more confident in the setup. But he followed up with another question. He wrote that his "network topology is 15/2 FIOS --> Linux Server (also runs my VPN software) --> 1000/100/10 switch --> Linksys RTP300 --> phone. The tech said that I should forward TCP/UDP traffic on port 10000 to the router. Does anybody else do this? Things seem to be working without the port forwarding."

VonageTPA saw f2racer's post and raced to answer. "If you're not having problems, you might be able to skip the port forwards... but if you start experiencing problems, that'd be the first thing I'd check," VonageTPA advised. He then added some very helpful information about firewall rules.

Speaking of VonageTPA and the RTP300, he's started another thread today called RTP300-Initial Impressions. He's posted several photos, and lots of how-to's. VonageTPA talks about the RTP300's case design, power supply, operation, call quality and even has some miscellaneous comments. If you have, or are considering order the RTP300, I recommend you read this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Have a great weekend, and check with us Monday morning for the next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest!!
