Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 4, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In today's edition, we'll get the scoop behind yesterday's disruptions of Vonage service, as well as the Vonage website. We'll get the scoop about a new service Vonage is testing for small to medium-size businesses. We will preview the next race scheduled for a Vonage-sponsored champion race car driver from a revered racing family. We'll also look at a the Vonage Voip Forum thread that dealt with yesterday's service issues, as well as explore a thread in which a new member successfully tackled a project that configured Vonage to work with his Open Source PBX.

Vonage In The Headlines

Vonage Suffers Service Outage

As some members reported yesterday, there were some Vonage service issues yesterday. In fact, service issues were widely discussed in this thread. While several of the bloggers I read regularly - including Om Malik, Russell Shaw and Mark Evans-each reported a major outage, I have a somewhat different take on things. I still had phone service and based on the traffic load on this site I believe the service interruption was less widespread than some had thought.

In an article that ran on the Internet News site, Vonage spokesperson Mitchell Slepian gave his view of the day's events.

"The Web site was down due to a firewall issue, which was addressed immediately," Slepian told Internet News' Colin Haley. "In the process of repairing it, there may have been isolated minor disruptions, such as a fast busy." Haley added that Slepian did not say how many customers were affected or for how long, but said the problem has been resolved, and the site and service are working properly. He refuted some media reports that the incident was a "major outage."

Later in this Digest, we'll take a closer look at the main outage-related Forum thread.

Vonage Is Beta-Testing a Voip for Business Service

The Wi-Fi Planet website has an article updating Vonage's plans to offer Vonage Business Plus to small companies with 10 to 100 employees. The service is in trials with about 75 businesses, and will be rolled out by September in the U.S., and by the end of the year in Canada.

The equipment will include voice gateways from Cisco, Quintum and AudioCodes, as well as IP PBX gear from Epygi and AllWorx.

No pricing info has been announced as of yet, but Vonage vice-president of value added reseller sales Mark Lyons says that Vonage Business Plus will offer savings over packages offered by traditional phone companies such as Verizon and SBC. Vonage Business Plus will be sold and installed through broadband operators, telephone systems vendors and systems integrators.

Vonage says it is offering the service in part because they sense growth opportunities in the business segment. Currently, only about 20 percent of Vonage accounts are business customers.

Vonage-Sponsored Driver Getting Ready For Big Race

Mention "Louisville, Kentucky" and racing in the same sentence, and many of us think of the Kentucky Derby. Yet the Bluegrass State is big on auto racing as well.

A week from Sunday, Vonage-sponsored driver Marco Andretti will hit the Kentucky Speedway in Louisville to go for his third Menards Infiniti Pro Series win. The race will be the Courier-Journal 100, which is sponsored by the Louisville newspaper of the same name.

Yes, just in case you were wondering, Marco comes from the famed Andretti racing bloodline. His father is Michael Andretti and his grandfather is Mario.

Marco, who is all of 18 years old, will drive #26 in quest of his third win. Marco's last win came in June in the Liberty Challenge. You may have heard of that track- the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

I'd be remiss if I didn't lead things off here by pointing to the Forum thread, Is all of Vonage completely down? The thread was started by Forum Member rickster, who reported that he couldn't make any Vonage calls or connect to the Vonage site.

The thread got more than 90 reply posts. Some posters echoed what rickster had to say, while other posters reported no problems at all. And as I noted earlier in this edition, my sense is that the service issues were not as severe as some had reported.

Still the thread was viewed more than 3,500 times. Individual posts were quoted by several bloggers and news organizations. To me, this underscores our role here as the widely recognized main communications vehicle for Vonage users to say what is on their mind- praise, criticism, suggestions, questions and advice.

Or, occasionally, descriptions of interesting projects involving Vonage service and equipment. Take for instance this new thread called Asterisk + Vonage! Let me first explain that Asterisk is an open source Linux PBX that does Voice over IP.

The thread was kicked off by new Vonage Forum member RazorJack. He writes with details of how he managed to hookup his copy of Asterisk with Vonage and did it legally!

His Hardware: -RT31P2 (Broadband Router w/ 2 ports) -TDM400P with 2 FXO and 2 FXS ports -Linux Box running latest Asterisk -Asterisk Management Portal (

"I hooked up my asterisk a few months ago to the Bell (Canada) line, setup things like QoS on my network and have Asterisk running great with 0.0001% jitter/echo," he writes. "I doubt I can eliminate the odd instance of jitter/echo as it seems to just be the nature of Voip on the net and hell, Vonage has jitter from time to time too!

To get things going, Razor Jack explains "I hooked my RT31P2 into the spare FXO port on my TDM400P on my Linux box, and setup DID (Direct Inward Dialing) so when my Vonage number rings, my PC at home running Eyebeam rings directly. When my Bell line rings on my asterisk, the PBX picks up and the caller gets a 'Welcome to....'autoattendant.' It works fantastic!"

Pretty incredible, RazorJack.
