Vonage, TowerStream Announce Small Business Partnership

August 3, 2005

By Staff

TowerStream and Vonage announced a partnership Tues. that brings a Voip Wi-Max hybrid to the small and medium business market, a move that both companies hailed as a major step in their growth. TowerStream, which offers fixed wireless broadband services to business customers, will now be listed as a Vonage value-added-reseller (VAR), a program with which Vonage has had significant success historically. While the companies naturally were enthusiastic about the partnership, several industry experts were hesitant to declare the deal a coup, saying the companies' lack of size, branding, and real technological innovation will keep their growth small.

The service is already in beta testing in 2 cities and will roll out imminently in N.Y.C., L.A., Chicago, San Francisco, Boston and the greater Providence and Newport, R.I. area. The new paired service will give small and medium businesses (SMB) the chance "to completely get rid of the phone company if they want to," TowerStream COO Jeff Thompson told Washington Internet Daily. He cited the superior tech support offered by smaller firms like TowerStream, calling Bells' support "shaky." There are "a lot of features with Wi-Max you don't have with legacy systems," he said, "plus it's portable... and as mobility comes into play it's well positioned to take the lead on that." TowerStream can deliver service in 4-5 days rather than weeks like some RBOC competitors, Thompson said. T1 systems slow down as companies expand, he added, whereas the Voip Wi-Max system simply allows SMBs to request more bandwidth. Above all, Thompson said price will drive SMBs to Vonage, because the Bells will be unable to match cheaper, set costs of transporting packets offered on the service.

SMBs of 10-100 employees are "really our sweet spot," said Mark Lyons, Vonage Vp-VAR Sales. This makes TowerStream, whose chief revenue model comes from such firms, a perfect fit, he added. The SMB market isn't a niche market, he said; There are "25 million SMBs out there right now... Vonage, and everyone else, is salivating about the market." Lyons said Vonage is "a little past early adopter at this point," aiming at the aggressive, tech-friendly executives looking to cut call costs, but hoping to grab the companies willing to take the new technology for lower cost.

Voip over Wi-Max has the "potential for disruption, but consumers don't really care how it's delivered," said analyst Bruce Leichtman. At this point, the incumbents have the best position to move into new delivery methods, he said, while cable companies are "rolling out in a more disciplined fashion." This places a hefty burden on any other voice providers, who face especially daunting challenges in the business sector, he said.

There's a question whether the business model will go very far, said Donna Jaegers, wireless analyst for Janco Partners, because while residential customers might risk some connectivity for lower price, businesses need perfect call quality. Jaegers said consumer on the business side want Wi-Max for broadband last-mile services, not voice. "People haven't really been talking about Wi-Max for voice," she said: "You don't need all that broadband for voice." TowerStream's heavy reliance on unlicenced spectrum, she said, will be a major variable in whether the partnership can be trusted to deliver reliable voice to demanding SMBs.

Thompson, however, said TowerStream's service level agreement guarantees 99.99% connection, an extra order of connectivity than even most Bells' DSL packages. The Vonage platform gives TowerStream customers the ability to prioritize voice packets, he said, meaning call data is the last thing to go during potential slowdowns. "I've never had any problems," he said, noting that he has been a Vonage user for 2 years. As far TowerStream's mix of licenced and unlicenced spectrum, Thompson said unlicenced frequencies "are the most polluted they've ever been" and there's never any interference on the TowerStream network. As the Wi-Max Forum pushes carriers into a more ordered use of the spectrum, and the FCC makes more available, he said, the potential for problems will reduce even further. As we spoke with Thompson via his mobile phone, we were disconnected several times -- from what he pointed out was his mobile network using licenced spectrum.
