Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In today's edition, we'll learn about some specific steps Vonage and wireless location and technology provider TCS are taking to make Vonage E911 work by the FCC's November 28 deadline. We will see what a major computer magazine's review of Voip services has to say about Vonage. We will look at what an online marketing consultant thinks of specific Vonage capabilities. We'll also look at a Vonage Voip Forum tread in which one of our most veteran Members is working with a new Member to figure out why calls to some numbers aren't going through.

Vonage In The Headlines

Vonage E911 Moves Ahead

A few days ago, Vonage announced it was partnering with location and wireless data technology provider TCS to boost Vonage subscribers' access to E-911 emergency services. On Tuesday, Vonage said that within a couple of weeks, Vonage would be sending Voip E-911 kits to thousands of Public Safety Answering Point services in the U.S.

Then, in September, TCS staffers will follow up with the PSAP office that received the kits. TCS will be collecting relevant PSAP contact data. This data will be part of the E-911 solution TCS and Vonage intend to have in place by the Federal Communications Commission's November 28 deadline.

PC World Magazine Reviews Vonage, Other Services

The new issue of PC World magazine has a major article on VoIP. The article is entitled "Net Phones Grow Up."

Seven Internet phone services were reviewed for the piece. These services include AT&T CallVantage, Packet8, Comcast Digital Voice, Verizon VoiceWing, AOL Internet Phone, Lingo - and - you guessed it- Vonage.

AT&T CallVantage was rated as the "Best Buy" (no, not the store). In PC World's review of Vonage, they rated Vonage's setup and ease of use as "Excellent/Good. The reviewer liked Vonage's "good call quality," but reported experiencing some "occasional garbling and clipped sentences."

Online Marketing Consultant Reviews Vonage- and Finds Five Things He Likes

On his blog, Web site marketing specialist Sherman Hu likes to post detailed reviews of software and services. He does so with an eye toward usability rather than "bells and whistles."

Hu's just reposted a review of Vonage that he had originally posted on the consumer-written reviews site Rate It Here's what he likes:

  • Mobility. "When I travel with family, we'd like a system we can travel with," Hu writes. "Vonage allows us to carry the small router, plugging in to a broadband connection in a hotel or friend's home, and to a telephone (fixed/portable phone), and make a call as if we were back in North America. That's a big plus.
  • Laptop Calls. "If I (choose) not to bring my router, but want to make a call from my laptop," Hu writes, he wants the option to do so. "Vonage offers a 'softphone', that I can install on my laptop, along with a Virtual Number, to call out and receive calls via my headset.".
  • Full Featured Services. "It's real handy to have all the services that a local telephone provider offers, (such as). call waiting, call forwarding, (Caller I.D.), and not be punished just because" the technology is new, Hu writes. "Vonage offers all regular features plus other advanced ones." Hu says he is partial to the Simulring feature, that rings to his cell phone and home phone, when someone calls his Vonage number. He likes it because it allows him to pick up the call even when he's out of home.
  • Easy to install, User-friendly. "Other Voip systems require you to be a rocket scientist to make the system work," writes Hu, who is no stranger to technology. "With Vonage, I installed the CD, plugged in the router and the telephone line, and made calls within 20 minutes. I really like that!" He also gives high marks to Vonage's Web control panel, which allows users to administer Vonage-related features and options.
  • Price."I didn't want to spend an arm and a leg to take advantage of this technology," Hu admits. "I wanted it to provide convenience, while saving money. Vonage offered me an unlimited call plan for $25, waiving the setup fee and first month fee. That's reasonable. I've since added a local virtual number that routes to my main Vonage number, for an extra $4.95/month.

    • Sherman Hu's full verdict?

      "In summary, Vonage offered me flexibility, functionality, and a service that meets my needs," he writes. "Plus I'm excited to know they will be launching a mobile Voip phone (and video phone) that will allow me to make (North) American calls when I'm a "hotspot" via Wi-Fi.. This takes it to the next level."

      Not without a sense of humor, Hu adds that he can visualize a bunch of people on their Wi-Fi phones at places like Starbucks, "calling away without a care in the world."

      Of course, there are those Vonage users who want to get to that place where they can use the Vonage service without thinking about how it works. To help them get to that place, some of those users ask questions on the Vonage Voip Forum. So speaking of...

      On The Vonage Voip Forum

      Not long before I posted this edition of the Digest, I noticed a new thread with a title that said it all: People can't call me!!!

      In the thread, new Vonage Forum Member Gmoney123 writes: "My Parents and Sister cant call me. They get a message like, 'the call can't be completed as dialed.'", Gmoney points out.

      Now here's what's interesting. Gmoney says that other people can get through. Still, that provides Gmoney small solace. "They (Gmoney's parents and sister) have tried all ways of dialing my number but still get the same message," goes this lament. "Anyone have any ideas or had similar issues?"

      When he saw the post, one of our most consistently helpful and most prolific (we're talking more than 2,000 posts) Members, reebok, asked Gmoney for more information so he could help diagnose the problem. "What phone carrier do they use?," reebok asked Gmoney. "Are other people with the same carrier able to get through? Is this a newly assigned Vonage number or did you transfer your old one over? And also, are they long distance or in a different area code?"

      Gmoney replied by posting the information reebok requested. We'll be watching this thread to see if Gmoney gets a satisfactory resolution to this issue - and will be able to use Vonage to call his parents and sisters. Hey, just like Gmoney, we love our parents and sister, too!
