Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 2, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In today's edition, we'll learn about a new agreement just announced today between Vonage and a major fixed wireless Internet Service Provider that intends to be a major WiMAX player. We'll learn on what Vonage spent more money on in June than any other company. We'll also review two new Vonage Voip Forum threads about call quality: one thread about on "hissing" Vonage connections, as well as a thread about echo.

Vonage In The Headlines

Vonage Announces Agreement With Major Fixed Wireless ISP

Fixed wireless Internet and "pre-WiMAX" provider TowerStream has just announced an alliance with Vonage that will offer Vonage service to TowerStream's customers. Under the terms of the new alliance, TowerStream customers in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, and the greater Providence and Newport, R.I. areas will now be able to select and deploy Vonage's small business Voip solutions.

"Vonage welcomes TowerStream as this alliance gives customers yet another avenue to purchase the company's flat-rate, full featured broadband telephony service," says Mark Lyons, vice president, VAR Sales of Vonage Marketing. "Further, our ability to offer the Vonage solution via TowerStream's massive fixed wireless broadband network makes our service even more useful to customers."

Vonage Is The Internet's Top Advertiser

Each month, the research firm TNS Media Intelligence tracks pretty much every Internet ad that's out there. Through a series of formulas that take into account how much it costs to advertise on specific Web sites, plus how many times each ad appears on them, TNS is able to compute most companies' expenses for Internet advertising. Then, when TNS gets all this information together, they can figure out which companies are spending the most on Internet advertising.

For the month of June, Vonage led the entire pack of Internet advertisers with $22.681 million spent. As a point of comparison, the two other telecommunications companies in the top ten are much larger than Vonage. In second-place was Verizon, which spent $21.051 million. SBC Yahoo's DSL Service, finished ninth with $4.697 billion spent.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On Saturday, Vonage Voip Forum member arco started a thread with a name that defines his problem: Callers are hearing an intermittent digital hiss...

Here's how he describes what's wrong:

"It's most prevalent when I call into my office, terminating on a T1, and a Meridian PBX," Arco writes. "What my co-workers complain of is that every 6-10 seconds there's a digital hiss or click for 1/4 second - no tone, but similar to a dead space on a radio dial. They also tell me that if I'm talking during that exact 1/4 second, it cuts me out briefly."

He does add that calls that are terminated to regular phone lines or other PBX's experience similar issues, "but to a significantly lesser degree."

Several fellow Vonage Forum Members have stepped in to help.

For his 500th Post since joining the Vonage Forum six months ago, Scerruti writes that he "would suggest that if you can lay your hands on a different adapter you give that a try. I am unsure what the return policies (restocking fees, etc) are, but perhaps you could buy one for testing and return it shortly thereafter to determine if it is a Vonage problem or a PAP2 problem."

Then Scerruti offered his direct assistance. "If you want me to call you at the office from my Vonage line, send me a PM and we can arrange a time," he posted. "I have an older Motorola adapter. Maybe you could arrange a call from someone here with a PAP2 and a Linksys router/adapter as well to collect more data points."

I'd like to think that offer of direct help is one of the attributes that make the Vonage Voip Forum what it is.

In fact, just today, I've noticed other Vonage Forum Members, including VonageTPA, NHTracker and telecommunications/networking analyst jdsharp have offered their guidance. That's a big part of we are about here- a community of Vonage users willing to give their time and expertise to help resolve issues for free that would cost a small fortune in telecom or engineering fees to diagnose and get right.

By the way, did you notice that the name of this thread- "Callers are hearing an intermittent digital hiss."- defines the problem. Although I realize it is not always possible to name your thread with the exact description of what you are seeking help with, doing so calls attention to your thread quickly. As we have seen in this thread, knowledgeable and helpful replies are more likely to flow in.

On a new Vonage Forum thread named Echo Help, Vonage Forum Member dlai isn't delighted by the frequent echo people who he's been calling over Vonage have been experiencing.

Dlai informs us that he has been using a Vonage Linksys WRTP54G router with a Panasonic KX-TG5566 phone, over a Comcast connection in the San Francisco area. By the way, the more information you post about your equipment and Internet connection, the more helpful it is to other Forum Members who may want to help.

"I'm having a echo problem which is driving my callers crazy," dlai writes. "I've played with the bandwidth meter, had the caller adjust the volume on their phones, but still am fighting the problem. I currently have the meter set at normal. Does anyone have any tips to help reduce or eliminate the echo?"

Fellow Vonage Forum Member (and current Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week arcking replied, asking dlai to supply more information, including the results of a TestYourVoIP test. Dlai did this. I suspect that as today goes on, the thoroughness of dlai's information will generate more helpful posts.

Before we end today's Digest edition, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day.
