Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - July 20, 2005

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 20, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Today, we'll break big news about a new Vonage Voip phone you'll be able to buy starting this Sunday. We'll analyze some stats that show visits to the Vonage Web site are way up - and, in fact, are more numerous than visits to lots of other sites you may be familiar with. We'll visit a new Vonage Voip Forum thread about balky voice mail indicator lights, as well as an older thread in which some Vonage Voip Forum members give their thoughts about the best Bluetooth headsets to use with Vonage Softphone.

In The Headlines

Vonage and VTech To Offer Voip Phone Starting Sunday

Vonage, has just announced it is partnering with phone manufacturer VTech to offer a Vonage-configured version of the VTech's IP-8100-2, cordless broadband phone system. Beginning this Sunday, the product will be available at some 8,000 retailers where it will sell for $149.99. There will also be a rebate after 60 days of service.

Both Vonage and VTech announced that the IP8100-2 will come with two handsets and will be expandable up to four. You will be able to plug this phone directly into your broadband connection or existing router, eliminating the need for a stand alone adapter and telephone.

If you want to buy additional handsets, that'll be $49.99 apiece.

Oh, and for you chip heads out there: the IP8100-2 is configured with the Texas Instruments TNETV1060 Voip chipset.

Visits To Vonage Site up 17 Percent

Internet traffic survey and analysis site comScore Media Metrix measures the Web surfing patterns of tens o thousands of representative Internet users. They crunch the numbers and then come back with several analyses that are broadly respected by technology, marketing and advertising industry leaders.

The June numbers are just in. According to ComScore Media Metrix, Vonage's website attracted 6,420,000 unique visitors in June, up 17 percent from the count of 5,490,000 unique, or individual, visitors in May.

In comScore Media Metrix's overall survey, Vonage was the 123rd most visited website. Vonage finished just ahead of 124th-place Forbes.com and its affiliated sites- and well ahead of such familiar names as Mozilla.org (home of the popular Firefox browser; Intercontinental Hotels (Holiday Inn and other brands), Marriott, and DaimlerChrysler. Number one, incidentally, was the Time Warner Network, which features AOL.com, CNN.com, Time.com, and several other familiar sites and brands.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Voip Forum thread labeled called Voice Mail Indicator Light Not Turning Off Today, we find that even experienced Vonage Forum members such as KDWycha feel comfortable enough here to ask - rather than just answer-questions. He starts off his thread by noting that at Noon, he received a call which went to voice mail. The indicator light came on for a few minutes and then shut off. He checked his voice mail and it took one minute to ask for his password. Then, the dashboard told him there were no messages. He checked the dashboard a little while later, and then received the message.

To complicate matters, after KD deleted the message, his voice mail indicator lights would not turn off. He tried rebooting the adapter, but to no avail.

Vonage Forum member arcking correctly noted that yesterday, Vonage put up a service notice on its website that voice mail processing was temporarily a bit slow. Arcking suggested that could be the problem. To make sure the problem is not with the phone itself, Forum Member houuser suggested to go to a non-Vonage telephone, "call yourself and leave a message. Hang up, call the *123 and retrieve and be sure and press the * key when finished," he wrote. After doing this, he suggested that KDWycha "see if the message light will then reset."

On a Vonage Voip Forum thread called Bluetooth Headset With Softphone, veteran Member Fletcher kicked off the discussion in February by recommending his Vonage SoftPhone setup of a Motorola HS820 bluetooth headset along with a $39 Bluetooth dongle for his PC. Since then, several other Members have come up with their own suggestions. Member DentalRep ran down the "drill" for a Jabra headset, while another member, Phog, showed certainly isn't in a fog about his Logitech Mobile Freedom Headset and Targus ACB10US Bluetooth USB Adapter. Then, on Monday, new Vonage Voip Forum Member liske made a post noting he isn't a big fan of softphones, and prefers standard Voip service instead. He then used that premise to tout the Clipcomm BS-V100/L100 Bluetooth LAN/VoIP Access Point, which he explains can let you use your Bluetooth headset through a Voip landline rather than a softphone.
