Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 19, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Today, we'll review a major announcement from Vonage about how they are going to provide E911 services. We'll look at comments from a key Vonage exec about how services such as Vonage are changing the nature of long-distance calling. We'll see exactly where Vonage ranks on one research firm's list of largest Voip companies as ranked by subscribers. We'll visit Vonage a Voip Forum thread about the connection issues a new user seems to be having with his PAP2 adapter. Finally, we will have a major announcement of a successful milestone we've just reached - which we couldn't have done without each and every one of you.

In The Headlines

Vonage Signs Deal With Key E911 Technology Provider

The deadline for Vonage and other Voip companies to provide Emergency911 services is fast approaching- not only in the U.S. but in Canada as well.

Yesterday, Vonage signed a deal with TeleCommunication Systems just for this purpose. TCS is a provider of precise location and wireless data technology for its Automatic Location Identification call routing, cal steering and call center services.

In making the announcement, Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron said that "the relationship with TCS leap-frogs fixed Voip E9-1-1 services, providing our subscribers with a new level of confidence and security."

Citron noted that TCS was the first company to provide an E911 solution for cellular services- a skill set that he believes that TCS has been applying to help Vonage "address the challenges of providing E911 for VoIP. Voip is growing rapidly, and we are pleased that this solution is designed to bring our subscribers immediate and direct contact with the needed emergency services.

"With TCS," Citron added, "we are now poised to rapidly deploy life-saving services across our U.S. and Canadian footprints.”

And, that footprint is getting larger...

Report Says Vonage Was World's Fifth-Largest Voip Service Earlier This Year

I just read a report on the ZDNet IP Telephony Blog in which blogger Russell Shaw (one of the Voip bloggers I read regularly listed the top 10 Voip providers in the world. This ranking was by subscriber count, and included numbers effective through the first quarter of this year (ending March 31, 2005).

It showed that Vonage was fifth- but from my reading of the numbers, and the subscriber growth since then, Vonage is quite likely the third largest by now. And since we hear they are expanding into Australia, Vonage should grow even more over time.

The top two Voip services are primarily softphone services- which offer far less configuration ability than Vonage but are liked by newbies because they don't normally require you to configure your service.

The top ten Voip services by subscriber count in March, 2005 were:

Skype- 5,300,000; Yahoo! Japan- 4,517,000; VoiceGlo- 605,000; Free (France)- 600,000; Vonage 535,000; FastWeb (Italy) 528,000; Cox- 413,000; Time Warner- 372,000; Cablevision- 364,000; and Neuf (France)- 297,000.

Vonage Exec Says "There's No Such Thing As Long Distance" Any More

In an interview for an article called "Long distance on life support," Vonage Canada president Bill Rainey tells Grant Buckler of Canadian technology site why he agrees with the premise.

Buckler describes Rainey as predicting that the distinction between local and long-distance calls will disappear. With services such as Vonage's, that provide unlimited calling throughout North America for a flat rate, "there is no long distance," Rainey says. "There is no long distance. Every call in theory is a local call."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Voip Forum thread called PAP2 Red LED light and Blue ethernet light on; wont connect, new Vonage Voip Forum member jutnac described the problem he mentioned in the name he gave his thread. He says that he spent all of a recent afternoon noon trying to get his PAP2 adapter to connect without any luck. "When I first got the PAP2," he writes, "I had the same problem (where) I would disconnect the modem, router and adapter and then reconnect in the same order." He says though, that although the lights were on, there was no connection.

Jutnac had called Vonage customer support, but wanted to try the Vonage Voip Forum as well. He remembered seeing some threads that discussed the issue and what to do, but did not recall exactly what they were named and where they were posted. But then Vonage Forum member arcking posted a reply suggesting that jutnac try the threads at these URLs:

Now, For Some Big News About The Vonage Voip Forum

Two big pieces of news, actually!

Yesterday around Noon Eastern Time (U.S.), our Vonage Voip Forum Web site tallied our 10 millionth page view since we launched it in March, 2003. I started to think of what that means- 10 million times, a Forum Member or visitor has come with a question, answer, to read the news, to say something positive, to register a complaint. And 10 million is nothing to sneeze at either. That's more people than live in New York, London or Los Angeles - and more people than have bought that new Harry Potter book!

And speaking of Vonage Voip Forum Members- we are now at 14,000 Members strong! Our 14,000th member, jamesinTX, joined us just before 9 a.m. Eastern time this morning. Welcome jamesinTX!

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Wednesday morning for the next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest!!
