Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 15, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Today, we'll look back at reports that some Vonage customers had temporary difficulty accessing their voice mail messages through the Vonage Web site. We'll examine a new technology that may make it easier to use Voip services like Vonage over dial-up Internet connections. We'll talk about a new certification program for consumer electronics retailers and salespeople to sell Vonage service and equipment. Finally, we'll examine the continuing controversy about all this talk that Vonage is thinking about selling itself to BellSouth, and what some of you have been saying about those rumors on the Vonage Voip Forum.

In The Headlines

Vonage Voice Mail Glitches Reported-But Seem To Be OK Now

Late yesterday, the technology news site CNET reported that some Vonage users have been unable to log on to the Vonage site to access their voice mail since Wednesday. Yesterday, a Vonage spokeswoman wrote to CNET that "we're having voice mail issues right now." It seems that some of those issues came on Wednesday in a thread on Broadband, where some people reported getting the message "customers may be experiencing an intermittent issue with logging into your Web account."

The last we checked, some members on that Forum (which we respect, by the way), started reporting the problem was fixed. We tried on our own several times this morning and except for one attempt, didn't have problems accessing our own voice mail. We should point out that if you want to check your voice mail through your Vonage account, log on to your Vonage account and click the Voicemail tab. The Get Voicemail page will come up. When you see that page, click the Get Voice Mail tab immediately to the right of your phone number. If you have Voicemail a Voicemail page will open. On that page, go to the Inbox and click on the Listen link. Your messages will play on your PC.

Company Testing Dial-Up Voip Solution

A company called Nomad International says it has begun beta-testing its Nomad Pro dial-up Voip units. This is a 1-port Dial-up gateway that is supposed to be able to offer Voip to dial-up customers. We'll be looking closely at reports on how this test is going, and of course, we will report what we hear - here!

"Authorized Vonage Agent" Certification Program Announced

Many consumer electronics companies, you know, offer certified dealer or certified agent programs to retail salespeople. You probably bought your home entertainment system and your refrigerator from a certified salesperson for the brand you purchased.

Now, Vonage Marketing is teaming up with a company called Brightpoint to offer retailers, agents and independent salespeople the opportunity to become Authorized Vonage Agents. Working through the Brightpoint Accesspoint Dealer Network program, these retailers, agents and independent salespeople will be able to become Authorized Vonage Agents.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

The rumors about Vonage possibly being for sale started Wednesday on one Internet phone blog. As we reported yesterday, Vonage Voip Forum Member masqcy noticed the post, which said that Vonage might be in talks to be acquired by Atlanta-based regional phone company BellSouth. Masqcy started a Sale Rumored? thread on it.

Then, some other Voip blogs we read regularly picked up on our thread, as well as on the blog post that first mentioned the rumor. It doesn't appear that any of the several other Voip blogs we checked seem to be as sure as that first blog that such a sale would ever happen.

In yesterday's Digest, we reported that the sentiment on our Forum is, not in favor of such a sale- should one ever occur. In fact, this morning, Forum Member LuisPR posted that he agrees with me that this sale isn't likely to happen. And Forum Member taylor2767 has made a couple of posts from which it is easy to tell he hopes such a sale does not occur.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Have a great weekend, and check with us Monday morning for the next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest!!
