Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - July 14, 2005

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 14, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Today, we'll look at how Vonage wants some of its users to -um-"get naked." We'll consider a rumor making its way around the Internet that Vonage, the company, may be in merger talks with a leading regional phone company. We'll also review new Vonage Voip Forum threads about lightning and one regarding porting a number from Sprint.

In The Headlines

Vonage Wants UK Subscribers To "Get Naked"

Well, over the Fourth of July weekend we did happen to notice some beachgoers who were almost there. But relax, we're not talking about that kind of naked, but about an offering called "naked DSL."

According to a report in the British technology newspaper The Register, Vonage wants British phone company BT to establish "naked DSL" subscription plans. Such plans would enable BT subscribers to take a DSL line without having to pay for standard telephone service as well. That way, some subscribers would not have to feel that since they are already paying for phone service, signing up for Vonage would be an extra expense they might not be able to justify.

What is sparking Vonage's wish for Naked DSL is a yearly surcharge to BT's broadband subscribers of some 672 British pounds (xx) on top of their broadband bill, (more than five times last year) no matter who their ISP is.

"Broadband subscribers deserve the right to choose their broadband and telephone providers independently without being forced to pay for a telephony line they may never use," Vonage UK marketing director Kerry Ritz said.

Rumors of Vonage Selling To BellSouth?

Early this morning, Vonage Voip Forum Member masqcy noticed a report making its way around the Internet that Vonage might be in talks to be acquired by Atlanta-based regional phone company BellSouth. Masqcy started a Sale Rumored? thread on it. Other Forum Members began to post that they saw some of these same reports. The sentiment on our Forum is, to put it mildly, not in favor of such a sale- should one ever occur.

Not that it will. Shortly before we put this morning's newsletter up, in fact, we made the rounds of several Voip blogs that we read regularly- blogs normally not hesitant to scoop each other and to make big forecasts. None of these blogs seemed to think such a purchase was likely at all. And for the record, I don't either.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Today, Vonage Voip Forum Member nesincg started a thread that he named, RT31P2 phone port dead after storm. When I read his post, I reminded myself that yes, this is the time of year for thunderstorms - and thunderstorms are sometimes unkind to computers and communications equipment. But then, when I clicked on nesincg's profile and saw that he was a pilot, I thought to myself that he must be technically minded and has faced a thunderstorm or two in his time. All of which gave me extra incentive to read his post (which I would have done anyway).

So, nescing writes:

"Mother nature just blew my 3rd (Linksys) RT31P2 router today, the day it arrived. The problem I’m having is whenever a lightning storm passes nearby, the phone ports on the router will stop working but otherwise the router functions normally. Line1 will blink on for a half second then off. Line1 and 2 will blink on for a second and then off. This sequence repeats every 10 seconds or so. This means it is dead."

Ouch, that'll ruin your day. In fact, fellow Forum Member VonageTPA knows a thing or two about lightning. He writes:

"Living in the lightning capital of the western hemisphere, I've learned a thing or two about lightning and I'd suggest you check your grounding. What equipment do you have connected & how is it connected to the RT31P2? You say you've disconnected the outside wiring, but what is the status of the ground on there?," he asks

VonageTPA's recommendation: "If it's still connected and isn't bonded to the house's electrical ground, there's your problem. I've seen more equipment damaged due to multiple grounds than no ground at all.:

A helpful explanation that sounds pretty - um- "grounded" to us (hey, this is a long week so excuse the awful pun :-)

You know, we get a lot of threads here about number portability. That's a big issue for a lot of our newer members, and some of our veteran members as well. Last month, in a new Vonage Voip Forum thread called Porting a Sprint Number, new Forum Member dansx6 complained that he was having all sorts of trouble getting Sprint to port his number over to Vonage. Forum Member and Vonage representative rcb116- who lives in the same part of New Jersey as dansx6- followed up with a couple of posts offering both encouragement and advice. Then, just this morning, new Vonage Forum member enevent put up a post with a list of links to information about number portability and links to agencies dansx6 could complain to if the problems continue.

Great first post, enevent!

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Friday morning for the next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest!!
