Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 13, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Today is one heck of a busy news day. We'll look at the results of a major, conclusive study that compared the technical quality of Vonage calls with those of competitors. In the light of another Internet phone service provider's announcement about a new initiative to enable Internet calling over Wi-Fi, we'll look at a similar solution already available to Vonage subscribers. We'll take a look at how many people saw Internet-based Vonage ads last week, and pay a visit to a successful investor and new Vonage subscriber who prefers to call customers over his Vonage line rather than over his cell phone. We'll also review new Vonage Voip Forum threads on testing E911 service, using your Vonage line in conjunction with your DirecTV service, and a thread where a new Vonage user found out the maximum time allotted for each Vonage voice mail message.

In The Headlines

Vonage Tops Survey of Internet Phone Providers

Yesterday, leading Internet performance measuring and monitoring firm Keynote Systems released the results of a 163,000-call survey of Internet call quality. The survey consisted of calls from Voip to standard phone lines and vice versa, as well as from local loop Voip to public switched telephone networks. All calls were placed between San Francisco and New York.

The study examined lots of factors, including service availability, average number of call attempts, daily outage time, audio delay (latency) audio delay consistency over time, listening quality, and percentage of dropped calls. Performance in those, as well as selected other categories, were combined to make raw scores.

Keynote said that in terms of total reliability, Vonage led all Voip providers by scoring 80 of a possible 100 points. Other Voip providers tested included AT&T CallVantage, Packet 8, Primus Lingo, Verizon VoiceWing and SkypeOut.

What Skype-Boingo Wireless Deal Means for Vonage Subscribers

A new service called Skype Zones has started to offer global Wi-Fi access to Skype customers. The service, from Skype and wireless Internet access provider Boingo Wireless, is throughout Boingo's 18,000-location Wi-Fi hotspot network. This is not standard Skype access via Wi-Fi, but a customized version offered via the Skype Zones service. Skype Zones, which is being sold for an unlimited $7.95 a month or $2.95 for a two-hour hookup, runs on a Skype-tailored edition of Boingo's software.

While understand the appeal of this offering, but we should point out that Vonage users wishing to use Vonage over an out-of-home Wi-Fi connection already have an alternative. The Vonage softphone, which costs $9.99 a month, can be downloaded onto a Wi-Fi enabled notebook computer. When you and your notebook are within the coverage area of a free or subscription-access Wi-Fi hotspot, you're good to go. And, you won't have to worry about burning up those fast-to-add-up cell phone minutes.

Another Big Week For Vonage Ads

Every week, the Internet advertising and traffic measuring service Nielsen//NetRatings AdRelevance computes how many times ads from leading Internet advertisers were viewed in the previous week. The company gets this number from surveys that point to how many site visitors and page views leading Web sites get, and the number of times that the advertisers being measured had ads on those sites.

According to Nielsen, the week of July 3 found that Vonage ads totaled 813,553,000 "impressions." One person seeing an ad one time is an "impression." If, in your web surfing that week, you saw Vonage ads 47 times, well, that's 47 "impressions."

Vonage, incidentally, ranked #3 in impressions, ahead of Dell and Microsoft and behind only the Apollo Group (University of Phoenix) and United Online, Inc. (no, not United Airlines, but Internet service provider NetZero.

Young Investor Gives Financial Nod To Vonage Service Over Cell

The other day, I came across Neville's Financial Blog. Neville Medhora, 22, is a fulltime student at the University of Texas, and with an organized mind toward his future, is an active and informed investor.

Hey, as an entrepreneur myself, I like to read about people who have their business goals and financial priorities straight. For Neville, that means using his new Vonage account whenever possible.

"My longest held business has a phone number, and paying for phone service costs me around $21/month," Neville writes in his blog. "Since I deal with people in all states, I always call people back with my cell phone....this confuses customers with different area codes and intermingles my personal and work life.

"The perfect answer seems to be Vonage," he writes. So long as you have a broadband connection, you can get unlimited phone service anywhere in the United States and Canada for $25/month. You can also select ANY area code and number, no matter where you are.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Several Vonage employees are Vonage Voip Forum members. When they want to know what you are thinking about specific issues, they have been known to start threads.

In a new Vonage Voip Forum thread called 911 Testing, Vonage Rep. and Forum member jdr30 notes that Vonage has recently rolled out E911 service in New York City. If you are a Vonage subscriber in NYC, jdr asks you dial 911, immediately state that this is not an emergency but you are testing your Voip E911 performance. He asks that you post your experiences in the thread.

Early this Wednesday morning, new Vonage Forum member dlanoc posted a thread which he named Direct TV and Primary Phone Line. In his post, dlanoc wanted to know if Vonage would be able to support DirecTV's scheduled dial-ups in order to update the program guide.

Proving that even new Forum members can be enthusiastic in their desire to help, mjmellin posted his answer. "I have successfully got my DirecTV to work with Vonage," he wrote. "I set the call prefix to ,#034 and the call waiting prefix to *99."

Finally, in a new thread entitled Voice mail limit?, new Vonage Forum member ZipZilla zipped a question about the maximum time-length for each Vonage voice mail. After researching the subject, ZipZilla came back on the thread nine hours later with the answer to his own question. "Found it!," he wrote. "The answer is 5 minutes."

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Thursday morning for the next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest!!
