Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 11, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Today, we'll review a Vonage Voip Forum thread from a new member who is seeking basic information about router setup, and spotlight what some experienced Vonage users advise. In light of many newly posted and very helpful comments, we'll revisit a thread started last Thursday on what business travelers need to know about setting up Vonage to make calls from their hotel rooms. We'll spotlight our Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week, and also tell you where you can click to watch those hit Vonage commercials so many of you have commented on.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Some other technology forums and boards out there are either complaint sites, out-and-out promotion resources, or are subject to flame wars where one member asks a question, and other members post insulting disagreements or attacks on the thread-starter's intelligence.

While we have our share of lively dialog and controversy here, that doesn't define our mission. On the Vonage Voip Forum, we like to think we have a welcoming place where new members can ask almost any level of question, and the answers they get will be thoughtful advice from other Members who have been here a bit longer.

"Mentoring," you can call us. In fact, by its very title a new Vonage Voip Forum post entitled Advice Please spells out the mentoring part of what we do here. In the post, new Forum Member Lomale kicked off the discussion by asking whether, to set up his new Vonage service, he should go with the Linksys WRTP54G router, or the free PAP2 phone adapter that would hook up to his existing 802.11b wireless router. Several Members responded with helpful advice. Then, one of the respondents, Forum Member marcelp60, expanded the scope of the thread by asking if he could disconnect the router and use it with the same phone number in two locations- Ontario (Canada) in the summer and Florida in the winter. To that question, new Vonage Forum member cargojack- who is off to a great start with 12 helpful posts in less than two weeks here- posted an interesting explanation of how to do this.

On Thursday, Vonage Voip Forum Member arcking started a new thread called Using Vonage Adapter In A Hotel. While we spotlighted this thread in last Thursday's Digest, the fact that many of you have responded to this thread over the weekend tells us we have a topic of broad interest here. Forum Member Radioman991 describes how he got Vonage to work over his laptop from Holiday Inns, as well as other hotels. After describing the setup he used, Radioman991 adds: "If you land in a hotel with a CAT5 cable, it just works. Some of the Holiday Inns I have been at require you to log in. Once I logged in from the laptop, the phone light comes on, and life rocks."

Meet Our Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week

At the start of each work week, we spotlight one Vonage Voip Forum member who has been especially helpful in answering questions posed by fellow Forum members. We look for quality of posts rather than just quantity - but there are a few of you who post informatively and often. Ever-helpful Vonage Forum member reebok certainly fits that criteria. Now just a few posts short of 2,000 (yes, 2,000)!, Clearwater, Fl.-based reebok has averaged more than 7.6 posts a day since joining last October. His posts have covered the gamut from offering advice on local number portability and security issues to router questions and quality-of-call factors.

Want To Watch A Vonage Commercial On Your Desktop? How About Right Now?

We know that lots of Forum Members like to watch Vonage's entertaining "People do stupid things" commercials. In fact, we often mention these ads to our friends. Sometimes, our friends have not seen these ads as of yet - but are interested. I'd bet the same is true of your co-workers.

Rather than TiVo like mad in an effort to record these ads, why not go to the Vonage on TV page right here on this site. We have links to all of the streaming video ads including: "Fountain," "Rocket" (a favorite of mine and many of you as well), "Tree" and "Batter." Just click on the link for the clip you want to watch (and the media software you want to use to watch it with), and the clip will start playing right away.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Tuesday morning for the next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest!!
