Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 8, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Today, we'll learn about a new partnership between Vonage and a voice-and video chat company with more than 3.5 million members. In the wake of yesterday's terrible terrorist bombings in London, we'll look at news reports about how Vonage did as a communications provider between morning commuters and loved ones concerned for that fate. We'll review what Vonage members on our Vonage UK Forum said about how they used the service to communicate with loved ones. Finally, we'll review a new Vonage Voip Forum thread that discusses and issues related to the placement of your existing telephones when you switch from your old phone company to Vonage.

In The Headlines

Vonage Strikes Up A Deal With Major Instant Chat Service Provider

Paltalk is an online Instant Chat community with more than 3.5 million members and thousands of live voice and video chat rooms Members get access to Paltalk Messenger, a utility that lets them administer their own voice and video conferences, as well as interact with their buddies on MSN, AOL, Yahoo! and ICQ instant messaging platform.

Now, current Paltalk users will be able to use Vonage for their communications needs as well. That's because Vonage and Paltalk will partner to deploy Vonage's telephony service to Paltalk's subsciber base. Vonage will offer Paltalk's subscribers flat rate residential calling plans starting at $14.99 in the U.S., $19.99 in Canada, and $9.99 in the United Kingdom.

But it was a far bigger story that involved the communications needs of UK residents yesterday...

In Wake of London Terror Attacks Voip "Not Affected" By Communication Demands

Yesterday, so many of our friends in the UK woke up to the horrific news that terrorists had set off bomb blasts in the London subway and on a double-decker bus. Nearly 40 lives were lost, and the communications infrastructure in London was severely tested as anxious loved ones, friends and colleagues of many commuters into central London frantically called the cell phones of their loved ones wanting to make sure they were OK.

The (Toronto) Globe and Mail reported most UK cell carriers experienced significant amounts of network congestion, and at least twice the normal daily call volume. But VoIP? The same G&M piece noted: that high-speed Internet services and voice-over IP phones weren't affected by the increased network traffic volumes.

To much acclaim and praise, Vonage has been officially marketing its service in the UK since May, after testing its UK service since January. Vonage Residential Unlimited's plan offers unlimited local and national calls anywhere in the UK and Ireland for £9.99 a month. For those users, as well as the broader base of Vonage subscribers, we offer our Vonage UK Forum.

And speaking of the Vonage Voip Forums:

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Yesterday we noticed a thread on the Vonage UK Forum entitled Anyone use Vonage to talk to loved ones in London?

We read Vonage user frickebob's reply with interest: "I called my friend in London about 6:30 am cdt (Central Daylight Time, which is six hours behind London time). She uses a cell phone. I had no trouble getting through to her and the voice quality was better than usual. We didn't talk long," frickebob says.

"After the call had ended was when I found out the cell system there was clogged," frickebob adds in his post. I am thankful I got through as I was worried."

On a new Vonage Voip Forum thread entitled switching to vonage questions about existing phones, Forum member frankgar asks whether, after completing the switch to Vonage, whether his existing phones will still be usable in their current locations plugged into the wall jacks. His setup, frankgar tells us, involves a wall phone in one room and a cordless with one another. His computer is on the second floor, along with his cable modem and phone jack.

Ever-helpful Vonage Forum member reebok, who is closing in on 2,000 posts, answers frankgar by pointing to two articles that explain and answer frankgar's question. Reebok recommends an article on the Vonage site called Step By Step Home Wiring Setup, as well as a Michigan Telephone website article entitled How To Distribute VoIP Throughout A Home.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Have a great weekend, and check with us Monday for the next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest!!
