Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 5, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. If you are one of our U.S. readers, we hope you had a great Fourth of July Weekend!

Today, we'll look at a news article that mentions a kind of place you probably have not thought of that one day soon, you might walk into and buy Vonage service and equipment. We'll also look at what a leading British technology journalist thinks about Vonage after trying the service. We'll point out interesting new Vonage Voip Forum threads about PAP2 connectivity issues, and about the Vonage service activation process. Finally, we'll meet our Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week.

In The Headlines

Will Cellular Stores Sell Vonage?

Yesterday, we found and read an interesting article about a growing chain called Wireless Toyz.

Based just outside Detroit, Wireless Toyz has grown from one kiosk, selling pagers, to an 82-store chain in 19 states. They expect to have more than 200 stores by this time next year.

For now, Wireless Toyz specializes in cellular service and compatible equipment for most major carriers. But, here's the interesting thing. Wireless Toyz founder and president Joe Barbat tells the Los Angeles Times' James Granelli that in an effort to be a one-stop shop for almost any telephone-service and product, the chain is looking at the possibility of offering broadband phone plans from companies such as Vonage.

I wouldn't be surprised to see this concept catch on.

Vonage Praised on UK-based Tech Site

As many of you know, Vonage service is available in the U.K. In fact, we have a Vonage UK Forum for UK--based Vonage users (but even if you aren't in the UK, you'll find lots of interesting and helpful threads.

The fact that we pay a lot of attention to Vonage UK issues - and interact with lots of you in Britain - are key reasons why we like to check on what British print and online publications have to say about Vonage. In fact, a new article by Peter Judge of Techworld "judges" (hey, bad pun, but we're still recovering from the Fourth) in a positive light,

"The Vonage product is a ludicrously easy piece of networking kit to set up," Judge writes. We plugged it into our Internet router (an aged Netgear), plugged in a normal phone, and powered it on. The lights flashed for a minute or two, and we had dial-tone. This is, as Vonage intends it to be, almost as easy as plugging in a normal phone to the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) socket.

Judge adds that in the test, "call quality was by and large, as good as the regular PSTN phone network. There were occasional drop-outs, but the phone was instantly, and very simply, useable. We tried a variety of phones ...and all worked."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Some of us were away from our PCs, and yes, our Vonage connections over the Fourth. Yet with our Vonage Voip Forum membership rolls nearing 13,400, it's not surprising that many of you were burning up the Forum over the holiday weekend with some interesting new threads.

On a new Vonage Voip Forum thread entitled Pap2 connectivity issues, new Vonage Forum member CPapin said he had just purchased a (Linksys) PAP2 phone adapter, and hooked it up to his Vonage Linksys router. The long and short - OK, long- of it- no dial tone. To the rescue came reebok, one of our more frequent posters. He suggested connecting the PAP2 directly into the modem. CPapin incorporated that into further diagnostic steps, which eventually included a factory reset and a system restore. "I totally believe that plugging the phone adapter directly into the modem started the process of fixing this," CPapin wrote in a reply posted last night. "Thanks a bunch."

You're welcome!! When you folks start threads and get your problems solved on this Forum, it reminds us of a big reason why we do this.

On another new Vonage Forum thread started yesterday called How soon can you make calls after activation?, new Forum member JCB posted a question saying that because it sometimes can take awhile to have your old phone number switched to Vonage, would that affect how soon you can use your Vonage connection to make calls after you activate your Vonage account. Veteran member reebok correctly noted that you can make Vonage calls immediately after activation, which is why you get a temporary number. JCB posted a thank you to reebok. That expression of gratitude inspired reebok to add a new post with a link to the Keep Your Existing Phone Number page on the Vonage site.

Good idea, reebok. Heck, let's put a link to Vonage's Keep Your Existing Phone Number page here as well.

Meet Our Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week

Each week, we'll be spotlighting a Vonage Voip Forum Member who has shown a willingness to answer questions from Vonage users. It is the presence of these knowledgeable, valuable members that help make our Forum not just a sounding board, but a place where problems are solved!

This week, we thank Stephen Cerruti (scerruti). A systems analyst and software designer from Mechanicsville, Va., Stephen has 13 years of experience in distributed software systems development ranging from military communication satellite ground station control software to Internet data center traffic measurement systems.

knows his stuff, and it shows on the Forum. Some of Stephen's more recent posts involve fax compatibility issues, dialtone problems, number portability, and call forwarding. If you want to read some of his more recent posts, click here. And here's more info about Stephen.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us on Tuesday for the next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest!!
