Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 1, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. Today, we'll talk about what Vonage is doing for world hunger. We'll visit an interesting new Vonage Voip Forum thread with a bunch of questions from a new user, and some helpful answers from some veteran Vonage customers. And because we know that our U.S. and Canada readers are likely getting ready for the holiday-we'll end with a look about how to check your Vonage voice mail from that cell phone you are taking on the road with you.

In The Headlines

Vonage Sponsors Live 8

Are you looking forward to this holiday weekend as much as we are here? Lots to do- traveling, barbeques, parades, fireworks, and Live 8.

Although this week started with a flurry of news, the fact that we are headed for a four-day Fourth of July weekend in the Live 8, a series of benefit concerts to fight world poverty that is expected to attract as many as two billion television viewers and radio listeners worldwide.

Many of those viewers and listeners will be exposed to Vonage advertising. That's because Vonage has spent a respectable sum to become a sponsor of MTV's Live 8 broadcasts of the Philadelphia Live 8 concerts, as well as to be a sponsor of Premiere Radio Networks' feed of the 12-hour show this Saturday. Vonage will run a series of 30-second and 60-second ads that will total 12 minutes in length.

Nice exposure for Vonage, and for a good cause.

And speaking of other types of good causes...

On The Vonage Voip Forum

When I was in school, the best teachers were those who let us ask questions, and didn't hassle us when we asked a question we should have already known the answer to.

On the Vonage Voip Forum, we have that same learning-and-helping atmosphere. That's why we were pleased to read new Forum member Justin8511's post, A Few Questions.

Justin cased (clever pun, huh?) out his new Vonage service by posting the following question:

"For my new job, I am going to be calling out of state a lot, using thousands of minutes per month. Because of this, I have decided to switch to Vonage. I do have a few questions before I actually switch over. Just to give you a background, I am a home user with an existing WIRED network running off of an 8 port Linksys router. I have 5 home PCS and a Printer all hooked up to the router, utilizing 6 ports. I know that I will need some sort of adapter for Vonage. What I want to do is purchase a Wireless Vonage capable router, preferably Linksys, that has 8 wired ports. I don't think such a router exists, but who knows," he wrote.

"If this is not possible, what router would you recommend," wrote Justin, who added he is thinking of buying the Linksys WRTP54G. "However, this only has 4 ports," he added. He also wanted to know whether he would be able to hook up his router to it, or would he have to purchase a switch?

"Other than routers," Justin closed his post by asking, "what else do I need to really get started? Are there special phones that are recommend, etc.?"

Now here's something really cool. Two of our most knowledgeable, experienced and helpful members, scerruti and paul248, each took the time out to help Justin with detailed responses. Mentoring is a good bit of what we are about here- and the mentoring is free!

Checking Your Vonage Voice Mail From The Road

I'd guess that most Vonage users are probably not taking their router on the road with them this holiday weekend. But I'd bet that most of you folks are bringing along your cell!

Do you know you can check your Vonage voice mail from your cell? The Vonage Web site has an article called Voicemail User's Guide that will help you through the process of checking your Vonage voice mail - and setting up voice mail on your Vonage line if you haven't already done so.

OK, so let's go over how to check your Vonage voice mail from your cell phone:

  1. Dial your Vonage voicemail access number (you received one when you signed up for Vonage voice mail).

  2. Press the pound (#) key on your cell. I like to call it the tic-tac-toe sign, but in this age of computer games, does anybody play tic-tac-toe any more (yea, I didn't think so).

  3. Enter your PIN. This will take you into your voicemail. From there, just follow the instructions!

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us on Tuesday for the next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest!!
