Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - June 30, 2005

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 30, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Although this week started with a flurry of news, the fact that we are headed for a four-day Fourth of July weekend in the U.S. (and Canada Day, for you Canadians) means that the flow of Vonage-related news is starting to slow down. That doesn't mean we here at the Vonage Voip Forum get to put on our beach flip-flops yet. In today's issue, we'll point you to a new book by one of our favorite Voip bloggers, We saw lots of you on the Forum Wednesday, starting and participating in some very popular new posts about configuring Vonage to work with the Dish Network and it's Digital Video Recorder capability; asking about "broadband boosters," and seeking advice on how to fix a fast broadband connection that all of a sudden, isn't so fast, or so "broad."

In The Headlines

Major New Book on Voip Released

Ted Wallingford, who writes The Voip Weblog, is one of my favorite Voip bloggers. When I went to Ted's blog yesterday at http://voip.weblogsinc.com/, I learned that he has a new book out called "Switching To VoIP."

Reading Ted's own description of his book, we see that it is technical in nature, and is largely aimed at network administrators who are planning to upgrade their company phone systems from old-style telephone service to VoIP. He says that the book is heavy on hands-on “how-to” that introduces Voip routers and media gateways, various makes of IP telephone equipment, legacy analog phones," and lots more technical stuff . Ted says that readers will "learn how to build an IP-based or legacy-compatible phone system and voicemail system complete with e-mail integration while becoming familiar with Voip protocols and devices."

I haven't read "Switching To VoIP" just yet, so I don't know how much about Vonage is in there. But from the way Ted describes his book, it's hard for me to believe that he'd skip over at least some discussion of Vonage. I'll read the book and get back to here with my thoughts. If you've read this book, feel free to come to the Forum and start a thread! To do so, just log in and click the new topic icon!

On The Vonage Voip Forum

These last 24 hours have really been especially active ones on the Vonage Voip Forum. Lots of interesting new threads and thoughtful, helpful replies!

In a new thread titled Dish Network DVR and Vonage, new Forum Member Boomshnka asks fellow members if they've had experience in getting Dish Network's DVR (which is very similar to TiVo) to dial in once a day over his Vonage connection in order to update the program listings. More than two dozen of you have posted various solutions and workarounds. Makes for fascinating reading and some interesting lessons learned. The thread is not so light on the tech, but if you like your Vonage, your Dish Network, and want to be up to speed about what's on tonight, then I'd suggest you should check out this thread. Hey, even if you are just thinking about ordering "The Dish," read the thread as well.

Forum member seattlezoid started a new thread this morning called Broadband booster now available. In the thread, 'zoid asks whether the $70, HBB1 Broadband Booster device she (we think 'zoid's a she) read about that "claims to improve your VoIP" by increasing your data rate is legit. As he has done so many times on the Forum, Member paul248 (our Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week) gives his thoughts. Given Paul's 300-plus post track record at being able to distinguish between the "helpful" and the "hooey," we were interested to find his reaction to this product somewhere in the middle.

Well, it sure sounds like Forum Member sbforshey could use a "broadband boost." Yesterday afternoon, he started a thread called Download Speed Dramatically Reduced: Help? Apparently, after installing the Vonage Linksys RT31P2 that came with his new Vonage service a week ago, his download speed has dropped off from around 5-6 MB a second to 128Kb a second. Several of you have already posted suggestions. One of the more basic but quite possibly practical ones, is offered by Trowski, who asks sbforshey if he has unplugged the modem and router, waited two minutes, plugged the modem back in, wait for it to sync, and then plug in the router. If you have a suggestion, just go to the thread click post reply, and speak your mind!

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow for the next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest!!
