Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 28, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

There's a lot of news of interest to Vonage users. In today's issue, we'll look at a key state where Vonage is launching service in several markets. We'll surprise you with some news about where you are going to see Vonage ads this summer. One prominent technology columnist has some upbeat things to say about his Vonage bill, compared to bills from other telephony service providers. And speaking of the telephony world, we'll look at whether or not Vonage will be affected by today's U.S. Supreme Court ruling that said cable television companies that provide high-speed Internet service do not have to open their transmission lines to competitors. Finally, we'll look at a popular new Vonage Voip Forum thread on Multiple router setup's.

In The Headlines

Vonage Comes To The Land Of Lincoln

Springfield, Illinois isn't a very large city, but it is the place where Abraham Lincoln rose to prominence. Springfield is also the state capital of Illinois- the fifth most populous state in the U.S. And while Champaign, Illinois isn't large either, it is home to the University of Illinois.

Yesterday, Vonage announced it was beginning local number availability in these two cities, as well as in two other Illinois heartland metros- Quincy and Decatur.

SBC is the incumbent phone company in most of these areas. From the sound of it, Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron is looking forward to the competitive challenge.

"Our local presence in these Illinois markets gives residents and small businesses the option to choose a phone service that provides a great alternative to current high priced traditional Bell providers," Citron says.

And speaking of Vonage's competition vs. companies such as SBC...

Columnist: My Vonage Bill Is Easier to Read Than My SBC Bill

In a new article titled "Avoiding the death of a thousand pecks," Network World columnist Mark Gibbs goes on and on about the seemingly arcane charges that complicate his SBC bill. Things such as "Residence Flat Service Line Sharing Basis," "Federal Subscriber Line Charge," "State Regulatory Fee," (California) High Cost Fund Surcharges 'A' and "B,' and so on.

Then Mark compares this billing scheme with that of his new Vonage account. He implies that the calling plans are easy to understand. "And no more death of a thousand pecks," he writes.

What Will the Supreme Court's Access Ruling Mean for Vonage?

On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that cable companies do not have to open their high-speed Internet access networks to competitors.

Because "deregulation" is the overriding theme of the ruling, some analysts are saying the ruling may lessen the regulatory pressure on Internet access services such as Comcast that may decide to block Vonage calls from being completed over their networks. Yet judging from Vonage's comments about the ruling, this doesn't seem to be a major concern.

Vonage vice-president of communications Brooke Schulz tells telephone news site Advanced IP Pipeline that Vonage is "generally of the opinion that high-speed Internet should be categorized as an information service to promote growth and remain unfettered from telecommunications regulation."

To that, Advanced IP Pipeline's Paul Kapustka adds this perspective:

"Though Vonage has had some rumored trouble of blocking by cable companies, most leading cable providers have said they wouldn't block such services," Kapustka writes. He adds that "Vonage also provides OEM Voip service to some cable and independent Internet-service providers, including Armstrong and Advanced Cable, as well as Earthlink."

Vonage Ads May Be Coming To A Theater Near You

We've always felt that some Vonage tv ads are almost like 30-second mini movies. In August, that perception will become reality for moviegoers in Boston and Denver. The New York Times reports that Vonage will run a 30-second "animated spot" in selected Boston and Denver theaters.

The spots will be run on a "trial basis." That means if they catch on, Vonage spots might just be coming to your local movie house.

"Cinema is certainly a good fit for us creatively, because people go to the movies and are sitting there waiting to be entertained," Vonage marketing director Caroline Finch tells New York Times advertising columnist Jane Levere.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

In a new Vonage Voip Forum thread entitled Multiple router setup, new Forum member thokar presents two issues he is having with his Vonage service. He asks why the person he is calling from his Vonage setup cannot hear him about one-third of the time, and why fax calls he generates from his Vonage account seem to disconnect after about 10 faxed pages. Looking for solutions, thokar asks a broader question about whether he's set up his network in the best configuration for his Vonage service. He's open for suggestions. When we checked this thread last night, veteran Vonage Voip Forum member paul248 (who we profiled yesterday as our first Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week) and thokar were exchanging posts back and forth. Perplexing questions and helpful answers- that's a good bit about what we offer to our more than 13,000 Members!

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow for the next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest!!
