Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - June 27, 2005

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 27, 2005

By Daniel Connor

So, how did the first full weekend of the summer go for you and yours? Well, in any case, it's Monday - so welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Today, we'll give you the scoop about those news accounts about how Vonage is supposedly using spyware to sneak around your computer and find out about your surfing habits. We'll look at a popular new Vonage Voip Forum thread on the best way to configure Vonage to work with a Wi-Fi network. Finally, we'll kick off a regular Monday feature in which we spotlight a Forum Member who has been especially helpful to other Forum members by frequently posting his expert solution to problems Members have been reporting.

In The Headlines

Here's Our Take On This "Vonage-Spyware" Controversy

Over the weekend, the Associated Press ran an article with the sensational headline "Major advertisers caught in spyware net." Since most North American newspapers, television stations and lots of Web sites are AP subscribers, you probably saw the story.

From the title of the article, it sounded like a major criminal conspiracy was busted. If accurate, the charges would mean that numerous advertisers mentioned in the article - including a leading retailer, a leading credit-card company, and Vonage, are planting software on your PCs to track your online behavior.

For starters, it seems to us that the AP story did not distinguish between adware and spyware. Adware is sometimes used -with your specific or implied approval - to track your Web surfing habits to deliver information to you that you might find interesting. For example, a newspaper website could track your IP address and note that you visit the site's travel section a lot. They then could forward you ads about travel bargains.

Spyware is more nefarious, doing the same but sometimes unearthing personally identifiable information that could, conceivably be sold to third parties.

None of the companies mentioned in the story were implicated in real spyware violations, and the ones that were mentioned- including Vonage, seem to have been mentioned because of reports that pop-ups - presumably generated from adware- have been appearing on Vonage affiliate Web sites.

To the AP reporter's credit, he did get a quote from Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron that Vonage does everything it can to make sure its partners adhere to its standards. When Citron was asked about one company that seems to not be following these standards, he told the reporter that the matter would be looked into.

Still, we think this matter is important enough for it to deserve the kind of robust discussion we offer in our Vonage Voip Forum. What do you think? If you have an opinion (or just want to read what others are saying about this controversy, you'll want to visit our Vonage Caught In Major Spyware Bust thread.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Last Thursday, new Vonage Voip Forum Member shiv asked an interesting question with his first post.

In the post, entitled configuring with an existing wifi network, shiv said he was moving to a new apartment which offers free wireless Internet, and wanted to see how he could use Vonage on top of his free Wi-Fi connection. Several readers have offered suggestions. In two separate replies yesterday Vonage Voip Forum member paul248 suggested to shiv that the Linksys WRT54G would be an efficient wireless bridge, combined with the third-party Sveasoft firmware on it. "That should let you run the router as a wireless client, and share the one connection to your entire wired network- including the Vonage box," he wrote.

Presenting: Our Vonage Voip Forum Member of the Week

Big news! Over the weekend, we registered our 13,000 member!!

Many members post questions regularly, and obtain answers that seemed to elude techs, or even Vonage tech support. We like to think that's because a growing number of you are in the trenches- implementing innovative solutions based on real-world trial-and-error- not a solution handed down to a well-intentioned tech support person who retrieves it from an onscreen help menu.

We've been noticing that some of you have been very willing to share your experiences and knowledge with Vonage users who have been encountering challenges or problems. Because we know that many of you take part of the weekend to work with these solutions, we think it is only fitting that we devote part of our Monday edition to spotlighting an especially helpful Vonage Voip Forum member.

Today, paul248 gets our nod. We already noted his contributions to the thread about configuring Vonage to work with Wi-Fi. But that's for starters. When we checked early this morning before we posted this edition, paul248 had posted more than 250 replies- on subjects such as getting Vonage to work with cordless phones, in a house with funky wiring, even on a network that includes TiVo.

We all continue to learn a lot from paul248's helpful expertise. If you want to read more of paul248's posts, here's a link to his technically insightful (and accurate) writings.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow for the next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest!!
