Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 24, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Today, we'll talk about how your Vonage service will be affected by that E911 ruling - but not the E911-within---90 days ruling you've been reading so much about. In light of some recent developments, we will go back a few months and look at a fascinating experiment in which one fellow hooked up his mobile broadband and his Vonage service- with excellent results. We'll look at what Vonage Voip Forum members think is a better Vonage-configured router- the Linksys WRTP54G or the Linksys WRT54GP2. And finally, we'll tell you a great way to test how fast your broadband service that supports your Vonage calls is working- and take you to a thread where - the last time we checked, more than 12Vonage Voip Forum members have posted their results.

In The Headlines

Oh, Canada: Vonage Says E911 Access by August 17 Will Be No Problem

The U.S. is not the only place where Vonage and other Voip providers are under a strict, government regulatory timetable to implement E911 in the next few months. Canada is making Vonage and others do the same.

In early April, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission gave carriers such as Vonage - who offer fixed local Voip services- 90 days to implement 911 service similar to that of incumbent phone companies like Bell Canada and Telus. Then, in early May, Vonage Canada led five other companies in applying for a 30-day extension that was ultimately extended to 45 more days.

That deadline is now August 17.

Late Thursday, Vonage Canada vice-president of marketing and business development Joe Parent said that with the extension in force, the company expects to be able to meet the deadline. The extra 45 days, Parent told Canadian technology news site, enabled Vonage Canada to contract with outsourced call center services so that live operators can intercept 911 calls and verify the caller's location. The original deadline, Parent says, keeps Vonage from being in a "short notice" position that would have given them a disadvantage in negotiating with call center outsourcing providers.

Makes sense. When the other guy knows you are under pressure, he's likely to drive a harder bargain, you know- or as Canadian's pronounce "you know," - eh?

Vonage Over Your Laptop- WITHOUT Wi-Fi? Here's One Experiment That's Worked!

Yesterday we noticed a CNET article titled "VoIP cozies up to cell phones." The article's passing mention of Vonage as a company with "ambitions to develop software for cell phone access" flashed us back to "using Voip over EVDO," a fascinating article we noticed earlier this year on the website (you guessed it- The article described how one fellow made a Vonage call over a workaround broadband wireless connection.

EVDO stands for Evolution Data Only, Evolution Data Optimized, a Verizon-pioneered broadband wireless technology that does not require hotspot access.

To do this, the unnamed author used Vonage Voip with the following equipment: a Compaq Presario; LinkSys RT31P2 Voip router (included with Voip server); a Crossover Ethernet cable (which you'll need if you are not using a router); a legacy dial tone phone; a Radio Shack power Inverter, to power the router in the car; an EVDO External Booster Antenna, and an EVDO TurboCharged PC 5220.

"I got some really strange looks as I held this old fashion POTs (Plain Old Telephone service) line to my ear while parked in a parking lot," writes the author. "People walking by probably thought I was on the strangest cell phone ever."

Yes, but not all who wander with EVDO are lost. According to the sound files he's posted from the call, his workaround worked! OK, can't resist. Here's the link to the article that contains the sound files from the call.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Because most technology applications give us hardware and software choices, many of us like to compare products. In fact, a popular Vonage Voip Forum thread titled What's better the Linksys WRT54GP2 or the WRTP54G does just that. Forum Member SDShaun started the thread last week after he ordered the WRT54GP2, but then noticed a promotion for the WRTP54G. So far, the replies have shown a difference of opinion. Forum Member hemantjindal posts that he has used both, but the WRT54GP2 has caused no problems. But last night, Forum Member rcb116 said that the main difference is that the 54G has four color-coded Ethernet ports, while the GP 2 has two Ethernet ports. "So, he writes," I really don't think its a matter of which (router) is better but whether or not you need 2 more Ethernet ports - and if you don't know how to plug cables in and need color-coded ports."

Got A Need For Speed?

Well, you know, we're looking at a summer weekend here, and many of us can't head out of town fast enough. But since we are Vonage users, we think of "need for speed" more often in terms of the speed of the broadband connection that carries our Vonage call, rather than how fast (within speed limits of course) we had for the shore.

With that in mind, I'd like to tell you about our Vonage VoIP Speed Test. The test clocks your upload and download speed in bits per second, the amount of packets that get through, as well as the maximum pause between data packets. The free test takes less than one minute. After the test concludes, the Vonage Voip Analysis tab opens on the test results page with an estimate of how many simultaneous high quality Vonage Voip connections your Internet connection can support - given the results of the test. Oh, do not forget, you must be a logged in member to use the Voip Speed Test.

Want to compare your speed and Vonage-connection capacity with others? Of course you do. Go to the Have you tested your broadband? thread, read results posted by other Forum members- then, post your own!

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow for the next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest!!
