Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 22, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Yesterday was the first day of summer, and a slow day in both the business and technology worlds. Still when it comes to Vonage, no day is a no news day. Today, we'll examine the advice a leading technology website offers to you small business users who would like to distribute your Vonage voice lines to several extensions in your building. We'll look at a popular new Vonage Voip Forum thread where Vonage subscribers compare how long it took Vonage to transfer their old phone number over to the new service. We'll also tip-toe into the interesting world of voltage measurement. Finally, we'll revisit a thread that we introduced yesterday in which a Forum Member is looking for pointers in how to get his Vonage equipment to work with his laptop over sometimes-balky hotel room switchboards.

In The Headlines

How To Distribute Your Vonage Line To Different Extensions

The technology advice Web site TechRepublic often has very useful pointers for small to medium-size business owners and managers who are looking for efficient, and uncomplicated, technology solutions.

In an article entitled "How scalable is your Voip solution?," TechRepublic's Deb Shinder offers useful tips on how to distribute your Voip lines (such as Vonage) to several extensions throughout your building.

"The easiest (way) is to use a multi-line multi-handset cordless phone system," Shinder writes. She notes that many vendors make these multiple-handset system. In a typical deployment, you would provide each of your employees a handset, as well as two landlines. Shinder points out that these can be two landlines, a landline and a Voip line or two Voip lines. Then, you plug the connections into the base station.

"The second way is to disconnect your landline and use the phone wiring in your building,"Shinder adds. "This will allow you to connect one Voip line to the existing phone jacks; your regular analog phones can be plugged into the jacks to use the Voip line."

So What Would You Suggest?

We'd love it if one of our growing legions of Vonage Forum Digest readers who has actually expanded your Vonage service to several extensions tells us how you did it. I mean, I could start such a thread, but it would be at least as fun if one of you went to the Vonage Voip Forum and started your own thread on how you managed to deal with this issue. Just go to this page, log in, and then click the New Topic icon! It's that easy!

Meanwhile, let's check out some interesting threads that you've already brought to life:

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new, very popular but quite popular Vonage Voip Forum thread called Wow! That was fast!, Vonage Forum Member JuggernautJohn kicks off a "juggernaut" of a discussion about how fast (or not so fast) it took Vonage to transfer his number from his old phone company, Verizon. JuggernautJohn said he filled out the online Letter of Authorization tool on the Vonage site on June 10, and said that the old number started working on his Vonage line last Friday. Fellow Forum Member ccleere said it took 11 days. It will be interesting to track the transfer times that other posters are sure to put up.

Here on the Vonage Forum Digest, we often like to kick start promising new threads that have only one post to date. Last night, Forum Member paul248 launched a thread which he named Ring Voltage Measurement. He wants to see exactly how much power his Linksys RT31P2 is taking up. Why? From paul248's message, it seems as though he would like to establish a consistent way to measure ring tone output on all of his phones and phone connections throughout his house. A worthy pursuit. Anyone want to join in? If so, just click the Ring Voltage Measurement thread link I placed in this paragraph, and you'll arrive at the thread's page. Then, to answer, just click the "post reply" icon.

You may remember that in yesterday's edition, I spotlighted a then-new thread entitled Vonage On The Road-WINGATE Hotel (all-caps are the poster's). In the thread, Forum Member and frequent business traveler themew describes his battle trying to get his Vonage setup to work with the phone system in the hotel he was staying. We predicted that the thread would generate lots of replies, and gosh, it sure has! Ten at last count! Maybe you'll be #11!

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow for the next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest!!
